Wolverine and the X-Men #34Kade Kilgore is either completely brilliant, or completely deluded. Well, they always say to bet on black…

The entire Hellfire Academy is going down in flames, and ice, and bark… the X-Men are doing a pretty good job of wrecking the place. Mass destruction is something they do quite well.

As for the students, most of them just seem like typical kids who are caught up in something way over their head and don’t know how to back away. It’s good that they aren’t just all painted as vicious, blood-thirsty sociopaths. Even the other teens in the Hellfire Club seem to realize that there is a time to hold ’em and a time to fold ’em. It’s a nice mixed bag, gives the situation a nice tint of realism.

Idie didn’t kill Kade, obviously, so good on her. Maybe she’ll actually grow out of this flagellation phase she’s been in? As much as I liked her and Broo, Quire might be good for her, show her how to live. Of course, Idie could show Quire a few things about self-sacrifice. Speaking of which, I hope Toad knocks some literal sense into Paige.

Being that there is only one issue left of this five-part arc, and Kade has either done something extraordinary or lost his mind… this can only end about fifty different ways.

p.s. bonus points to Warbird fighting Mystique… a gun to a sword fight indeed…

A+X #10Nobody likes Fantomex. This is just fact. Natasha is no exception… and apparently neither are the writers.

Sure, Fantomex does the right thing at the end, after being a complete unlikable jerk. In fact, him doing the right thing is really just him being a ponce. So, yeah, no one likes Fantomex.

Then we have the very cuties drawn Scarlet Witch and Domino. It was nice to see Wanda interact with a mutant and it not devolve into the whole “M-Day” stuff. Sure, there was a hint at it, but for the most part it was literally the story of two lucky ladies saving the known universe.

I do love Domino here, she’s sassy as all get out and just tases Wanda without a second thought. Hey, it worked, didn’t it?

Review: X-Men Legacy #14

X-Men Legacy #14I feel like I watched an episode of Leverage.

Nothing was as it seemed and the whole thing was cleverly choreographed to get a certain person in the right place at the right time. It was all even revealed through a quick flashback of ‘this is actually what was happening’. I loved Leverage, so yeah, this issue put a little smile on my face simply because of the nostalgia factor there. (Can you have nostalgia for a show that’s been cancelled for only one year?)

As for Pete Wisdom, there really needs to be more of him. I would like to see a new Excalibur or MI13 title. Not gonna happen, but a girl can dream.

As for the next issue, looks like Mommy is showing up, and from I hear, this can only end badly.

All-New X-Men #15You know what Jean’s true mutant power is? It’s the ability to make everyone fall in love with her.

Seriously, I mean, has there been any straight male character who hasn’t fallen for her at some point? It’s actually really freaking annoying. I can only imagine what it must be like for actual Jean/Scott shippers, hell, even Emma/Scott shippers. I’m kinda glad I don’t care if she gets with Scott, or anyone else for that matter, but if her whole story becomes ‘who will she choose’ kind of thing then I will have to save one of the slaps I’m going to give Remender and slap Bendis.

Bobby is always fun though, the way he’s kinda freaking out about his older self getting it on with Kitty. Then going out to the carnival and being so proud of himself as a mutant despite the fact that he’s heard a lot of bad things about how mutants are treated. It’s nice to see more of that other side, people who like mutants and think they are cool. Though I do wonder how much of it is genuine “mutants are people too” and how much is “mutants are a cool novelty”. I wonder if anyone will be bold enough to really go there on the social commentary…

Oh, and the whole Jean/Rachel thing… it’s kinda stupid but hilarious at the same time. When is someone going to tell Jean that Rachel is her daughter from another timeline? Does Jean already know due to the memories she downloaded? I hope we’ll see…

Review: Deadpool #13

Deadpool #13 (2013)There’s a Shaft joke here, it’s kinda obvious though, maybe that’s why we didn’t get it?

Anyway, they decided to give us another ‘blast from the past’ issue which will lead into something happening in present time. It was fun the first time, and it only works this time because of the fun it had with the Heroes for Hire, but I hope this isn’t a continual theme. If it is, then they will really need to step up their game on the next one.

As for this, a nice little rip on 70s, well, everything. It’s fun and a little sad at the same time. While you have all the clever quips and fourth wall breakage, you also have DP getting rejected, per usual, on so many levels. But in the end it’s just all kinda there… but that could just be me.

Anyway, they promise that they haven’t forgotten about the people who took Deadpool’s liver… I just hope we get somewhere soon with that.

Review: X-Men #4

X-Men #4 (2013)Two female characters are fighting and it’s a) not about a guy, b) not about material positions, or c) not just because no reason (looking at you Remender).

The whole fight between Ororo and Rachel was much like the rest of this series, very organic. The team was put together at last minute. Ororo just kinda took charge because she’s a strong alpha-type personality. But she made a decision that didn’t set well with Rachel in the last issue, it was a disagreement not based on men or pettiness. Considering how much pettiness we’ve gotten in a few other titles at the moment, it’s a breath of fresh air.

And can we talk about the cuteness of Jubilee and son? I really wasn’t sure what they were going to do with this plot line, I wondered it was going to just be another trope, Instead we get a nice, very real, moment between Jubilee, adopted son, and father-figure. The whole ‘you can’t go home’ vibe was perfect, take it from someone who knows.

Lastly, loving Rogue in this, she’s perhaps a little too ‘immature’ and hot-dogging it, but she’s a sassy Southern Redneck so what can you do? Kitty and Psylocke are also having some fun, and I love that Psylocke is expanding on her powers the way she is.

Overall, I’m very pleased with this title so far.

Uncanny X-Men #9Poor Dazzler, she just can’t get out of her disco days, someone always remembers.

This issue is pretty hilarious actually. From Irma cutting her hair and sending the sisters into a tizzy, to Dazzler’s unfortunate clothing choices in the past, to Maria Hill taking an impromptu vacation, to highjacking the hellicarrier… I giggled a few times, this is true.

Though this issue does bring up an interesting question, even if Fabio went willing with Scott because they saved his life, since he’s 16 and therefore not a legal adult, wouldn’t it technically still be kidnapping? I like it when little points like that are poked and prodded, underlining the reality of the situation. That’s how you make things more ‘real’ to me, not by running around and killing everything the moves.

But I digress. It seems like Mystique is still up to no good and poor Dazzler has been knocked out… at least I hope just knocked out… she was only knocked out, right? 0.o

Astonishing X-Men #66Is there a ship name for Gambit and Cecilia Reyes? Cause as much as Romy is my OTP, I can totally ship these two when Romy isn’t an option.

Beyond that, we’re seeing the aftermath of what happened with Bobby’s ‘big freeze’. The ice is melting and  people are trying to get back to normal, instead of, you know, things suddenly being normal without any thought to the consequences of such an environmental catastrophe. Cecilia, as a doctor, has been doing her best to help people who had been caught up in the tragedy. And it seems the storm shook something loose and the X-men are going to have to deal with it.

First though they need to deal with themselves, they kinda forgot what that meant in the chaos that has been the last year of Marvel doing their best to just jack everything up. I think a lot of healing is needed, and we aren’t seeing enough of that in the other titles.

Overall, I’m really going to miss this title when it goes.

Wolverine and the X-Men #33What school isn’t full of hormonal teens all trying to either kiss or kill each other?

While there is something a little disturbing about Kade wanting to see 14-yr old Idie in the Black Queen outfit, it works because he is not supposed to be likable, or forgivable, or any of that ilk. It’s nice to see him get his face punched, he’s been deserving of that for awhile.

As for Idie, this girl needs some serious therapy. I just hope that the fact she seems to have decided not to kill Kade and instead go help Quire means that there is some progress in that area. Quire, of course, is still falling for Idie and showing he’s not that big a jerk as he likes to pretend to be. Both characters are getting characterization arcs and this is a good thing, nice to see newer characters get treated as, well, characters and not fodder.

Lastly, it’s good to see that Aaron recognizes that something is wrong with Paige and isn’t just mis-characterizing her… cause right now I am really mad at her. Toad needs some love in this, he’s such a heartbreaking character.

Uncanny Avengers #10This issue isn’t quite as annoying as previous ones… but that’s not saying much.

Remender still likes to hear himself talk, though the massive blocks of text are shaved back some… some. Rogue actually has a moment where she acts like herself, and surprise, she has her hood off when it happens. I’m pretty sure her hoodie is possessed by something… and we definitely need a cross over with the Winchesters. Then at one point Remender flirts with meaningful depth when he points out the hypocrisy of the media and how it just moves on from each travesty as soon as they can in search of the next big thing for a ratings boost.

But Wanda continues to be all over the place, now she’s all depressed and ‘we’re all doomed’. This doesn’t really track with how she was during AvX, and is very much a “so some bad stuff has happened recently, I guess I’ll just give up”. Maybe this is to echo the reader? Cause I’m about to be all depressed and ‘doomed’ from reading this schlock.

Oh, and Banshee, Sentry, Grim Reaper and Daken came back and kidnapped people for unknown purposes… so that happened…
