Tonight we are introduced to the first trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy.

What the hell did I just watch?

I admit I haven’t read any GotG so I won’t even attempt to speak towards how this might fit with the established canon. I know GotG is supposed to have a lighter, more goofier feel, which in itself is not a bad thing. It’s actually great to see that the MCU isn’t going to just fall into the ‘dark and gritty’ black hole and continue to give us fun, action packed, feel good, adventure films.

But instead of having that sharp wit we’ve seen come out of the Iron Man 3 and Cap 2 trailers, this trailer has less of the feel of a major motion picture and more of something seen in a 90s Disney Channel movie. It’s really the scenes with the guards talking about the GotG, their uniforms are just… so… cheap looking and cheesy… and the jokes… so… banal and immature. The quality level seems to jump between crisp CGI and ‘let’s put a glow stick on it’.

But not all is lost.

It’s obvious that they’re not showing much beyond the beginning of the film here and it’s mostly used as an introduction for those who are unfamiliar with the property. While the introduction actually works against the trailer in that it’s very stilted, we can see that there is a lot left on this bone and we haven’t even scratched the surface yet. Plus I’m sure there’s a few million in special effects that haven’t been applied yet and that will hopefully clean up some of the cheap and awkward looking areas.

Though I say that and apparently no one took a second look at the after credits scene in Thor 2 before letting it go to print… I had been hoping that was a one off.

Guardians of the Galaxy First Look

Ever since Marvel Studios announced Guardians of the Galaxy at San Diego Comic-Con in 2012, they’ve done a good job of teasing us with some really cool concept art, but that’s about it. Production on the movie wrapped up this fall, but while director James Gunn occasionally posted pictures of himself feeding raccoons or holding up wrestling belts on the set , nothing from the actual movie has ever been officially published publicly. That is, until today.

The film’s director has taken to his Twitter account to post the first ever real look at Guardians of the Galaxy. Very similar to the concept art that was released this past summer and seemingly taken directly from the footage that was shown in Hall H during the Marvel Studios panel at this summer’s Comic-Con, the image has the titular team in a criminal lineup (at one point in the movie the group all find themselves in prison together). As you can see by clicking on the still and seeing it in high-res, none of them are very happy to be there.

With the film still about eight months away from its August 1st release date there are still some pretty big pockets of the movie-going audience who know absolutely nothing about who these characters are, so allow me to help out by breaking it down.

Gamora Guardians of the Galaxy

First up on the far left side of the image we have Gamora, a badass green alien played by Zoe Sandana. As the actress explained on the panel at San Diego Comic-Con in July, the character is a hardcore assassin and possesses great strength, agility and speed. She is an adopted daughter of the evil Thanos – the big purple dude featured in the end credits of Joss Whedon’s The Avengers – but starts a new life for herself with the Guardians of the Galaxy fighting with the good guys.

Star-Lord Guardians of the Galaxy

Next up we have Peter Quill a.k.a Star-Lord, played by Parks and Recreation’s Chris Pratt. Despite his looks, he is actually half human and half alien, and when he was a kid he was taken away from Earth and never looked back. He spends his days trying to be a Han Solo-type smuggler, but, like Gamora, finds a new path thanks to his new group of friends.

Rocket Raccoon Guardians of the Galaxy

Rocket Raccoon may be a lot shorter than his Guardians of the Galaxy teammates, but underestimating him would be a big mistake. Voiced by Bradley Cooper, Rocket is one of a kind, as he was just a normal raccoon before being kidnapped and undergoing experimental medical treatments. As his name implies, he is he is a big fan of explosions and weaponry, and of all the members in the group his closest bond is with Groot (who we will talk more about in a bit.

Drax The Destroyer Guardians of the Galaxy

This mountain of alien muscle is Drax The Destroyer, played by wrestler Dave Bautista. In the comics the character began his life as an ordinary human named Arthur Douglas who saw his entire family killed at the hands of Thanos. Needing somebody to help fight the evil titan, a cosmic energy known as Kronos takes Douglas’ spirit and puts it into a powerful alien body. He’s not only incredibly strong, but can also do some serious damage with a knife.

Groot Guardians of the Galaxy

Finally we’ve arrived at Groot. If you look at this character and think to yourself, “Man, that looks like a walking tree,” then you have some very sharp instincts. Groot is an alien of the species Flora colossus, and is the strongest member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. He has the ability to change his size and can absorb wood to become even stronger than he is naturally. He also has genius-level intelligence, though it’s a bit difficult to find that out given that he only has the ability to say “I am Groot” (probably not the biggest challenge for Vin Diesel, who is voicing the character).

In all probability we won’t get to see a Guardians of the Galaxy trailer until Captain America: The Winter Soldier comes out in April, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed that Marvel will give us something sooner rather than later!

Nebula

When Den of Geek say they have a solid source, I believe they mean cast iron. Their slightly sucky team may have fallen someway behind ours in last week’s big Monsters University quiz night, but they’re certainly good guys and trustworthy.

Well, that’s the UK Den of Geek anyhow. I really can’t vouch for the US lot.

So, according to the UK Den’s new report, the characters being played by Benicio Del Toro and Karen Gillan in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy are The Collector and Nebula respectively. At the same time, they’re repeating that Lee Pace is playing Ronan the Accuser, which isn’t new news, but now, I’d say, rather solidly locked down.

Previously, we’d heard that Del Toro’s character will be in multiple Marvel movies, which kind of threw me off the scent somewhat. How will they use The Collector over and over again? I can see how he might factor into The Avengers sequel, but beyond that, I’m at a loss. For now.

We’ve also heard that Ronan the Accuser will “swap sides” as the film goes on, in keeping with his comic book legacy.

Add Nebula, the space pirate and alleged grand daughter of Thanos – though I would like to see the DNA test results, please – and I think it’s signed, sealed and on the way to the postbox that this plot line will feature the Infinity Gems.

Guardians of the Galaxy is in production in the UK now. Expect a lot more to break around the time of Comic Con.

Taking this one with a big ol’ grain of salt. Gaimen was given ownership of Angela and he took her to Marvel and she just recently got introduced into the Marvel Universe… so maybe they want to solidify their rights to her by putting her in a movie? Maybe this is just a fan-boy hoax. It’s hard to tell sometimes…

via BleedingCool

I’m just a little split on whether or not this is a hoax or not, but even if it isn’t, that doesn’t mean it’s true – and, technically, I suppose, even if it is, that doesn’t mean it’s false. In all cases, though, it’s an interesting bit of gossip. And it’s an intriguing possibility.

A thread on the NeoGaf forums, flagged up by Screen Rant, featured the following image. It’s apparently a clipping from an unknown Scottish Newspaper.

Rich adds: It’s The Daily Record from Saturday…

karen gillan angela

Karen Gillan will have to be in good shape for her role as a gold bikini-clad alien villain in the Marvel comics superhero film Guardians of the Galaxy. The former Doctor Who star will play Angela, a flame-haired, sword-wielding bounty hunter. The 25-year old Scot – the Time Lord’s companion Amy Pond – begins filming in London later this summer.

So, did Gillan tell a friend who told a friend who told a local journalist? Is the source really “a Marvel insider”? Did this clipping ever really exist? Is Angela actually a “villain”?

This seems altogether too random to be based on nothing… doesn’t it?

But Marvel introduced Angela into their comic book universe very recently indeed. I’m not sure they’d have big screen plans for her so quickly.

Maybe they needed a bounty hunter character and she seemed as a good a choice as any – maybe even better, depending on your personal interest in that whole Slave Leia wardrobe.

I doubt the character line-up for Guardians will remain secret for too much longer. Production on the film kicks off in just the next few weeks for release on August 1st, 2014.

Benicio Del ToroCasting news has been dropping fast regarding the newest franchise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Deadline reports that Benicio Del Toro has been signed on for multiple films, the first that I’ve really heard of this being specifically mentioned with GOTG which means it’s likely a deal for other non-GOTG films.

Could Del Toro be playing the villain? One who, like Loki, will be brought over into Avengers 2 as the big bad? Del Toro would definitely make the kind of villain that would cause the Avengers to step up their game. But we already have three villains in Lee Pace, Michael Rooker and Karen Gillan… though, minions do often come in threes…

I suppose Del Toro could be playing a good guy but we already have our Star-Lord and most of the Guardian gang which would leave Del Toro a voice-role only. I dunno, just can’t see him as Rocket Raccoon myself.

In any case, this movie is racking in some serious talent with all signs pointing to awesome.

Karen Gillian - BBC PhotoshootOn the heels of the news that Glenn Close has joined the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy, The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Doctor Who alum Karen Gillan has also been added to the cast, only this time as the main female villain. Not being that familiar with GotG, I can’t even begin to speculate who she is going to be playing, though I doubt it will be an original character seeing as she’s a lead villain.

Karen played a character in Doctor Who named Amy Pond, one of the Doctor’s companions (and his mother-in-law, long story). The Who fandom does overlap greatly with the Marvel CBM fandom so it will be different to see her as a villain, especially along side Lee Pace of Pushing Daisies fame. Both are not exactly anywhere near the top of the list when you think of people to play bad guys, but both are great actors so it will be very interesting to see what they do with this.

They are also going to share the villain spotlight with Michael Rooker of The Walking Dead fame… so to say this movie won’t at least be interesting is an understatement.

Glenn CloseDeadline reports that Oscar nominated Glenn Close will be joining the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy in some kind of leadership role in the Nova Corps. Likely she will be the Nova Prime but there is no known female Nova Prime (that I know of) in the comics so likely she will be a new character.

Glenn Close has made a habit of playing strong women who you don’t want to mess with so she is a perfect fit to be the Nova Corps’ version of Nick Fury. The real question is will she take an active role in the action or, like Fury in the Avengers, be more behind the scenes and giving orders.

Either way, great addition to the film.
