A+X #7This series is already starting to cycle through characters which is kinda lame since it’s only issue seven and there are literally hundreds of characters they can pull from.

Regardless, these were pretty fun stories.

Tony gets his butt beat by Hulk but not in the traditional sense. Basically both Tony and Beast get outsmarted by Bruce which is hilarious in its own special way.

As for Thor and Iceman, can you say ‘odd couple’? Bobby is always not taking things seriously and Thor is perpetually missing the joke. Nice to see Iceman kick a lot of butt though, it would be easy to just let the super-powered Thor take the win so it’s great to see Iceman getting to show why ice can be one tough element.

CW's ArrowNot only is Oliver a really horrible friend but he’s also a really crappy son.

He has his mom drugged, subjects her to ‘torture by proxy’, and then he makes it all about him. Poor little boy is just so confused. Oh shut up.

Then he goes and decides he’s going to kill Tommy’s dad, just like that, without a single flinch of “you know, Tommy would be pissed if I did this”. And you wonder why Tommy doesn’t want anything to do with you?

I’m not sure if this crappy writing, or really genius writing in disguise. Oliver really hasn’t changed, he’s just as selfish and spoiled as he was when he left. So far, he’s not redeemable in my eyes.

And then there is the whole thing with Laurel. I get that they are trying to give Tommy good reasons to be mad at Oliver and do the whole Green Goblin thing (psst, that’s Marvel, did you forget CW?) but they have pretty much devolved Laurel’s character into the love interest while dangling Felicity out the window.

Diggle continues to be the only voice of reason here and truly the best character, ‘knight in shining armor’ indeed.

As for Yao Fei… screw you CW.

James Mangold has tweeted a new one-sheet poster for The Wolverine, this one in the same vein as the previous Logan art print only with the Silver Samurai.

Silver Samurai poster

I do love this style of teaser poster. Not only does it convey the theme of the movie but it’s just beautiful artwork on its own.

It’s also interesting that Silver Samurai gets his own character poster when he’s been all but ignored in the trailers, though I had previously suggested that they might be leaving him for closer-to-time advertising. This also does not give us a clear look at him either, we still have the dark few seconds clip of him from the trailer.

Of course, if I was a cynic (which I often am) it could simply be we’re getting this poster because Wolverine and Silver Samurai are the only characters distinctive enough to work with this style of art…. though I think a creative artist could easily represent the others so hopefully we’ll see others.

In any case, a little over two months to go!

Iron Man 3This review contains some mild to medium spoilers.

First off, you can definitely tell that this was directed by Shane Black. Anyone who has ever seen Kiss Kiss Bang Bang can definitely see that fighting/directorial style here. This doesn’t really take anything away from what was set up in Favreau’s first two films. It does though lend to one of the more unique aspects of Iron Man 3 which keeps this movie from becoming a stale threepeat.

Iron Man was about Tony becoming Iron Man, Iron Man 2 was about Tony being Iron Man, Iron Man 3 was about Tony and Iron Man being the same person.

After the events of Avengers, Tony is having nightmares and anxiety attacks. He knows he’s ‘just a man in a can’ and that he is actually very vulnerable. This gets punctuated by the fact that he is separated from the three people he cares about most, Pepper, Happy, and Jarvis. Then, in two very big battles, he has to fight without the suit or with only part of it.

The ‘dungeon’ fight scene where he only has one arm and one leg is one of the best fight scenes I’ve seen in these action/comic movies just in the sheer cleverness of it. It also clearly illustrates just how much Tony and Iron Man are one. Part of him is shielded, part of him isn’t. He’s vulnerable but he is still fighting and still winning.

This is what kept this film from becoming more of the same. The action was different, the psychological aspects were more subtle, and it really brought things full circle.

The other things I liked in this is that everyone played their parts quite well and the new characters were very well casted. Ben Kingsley was both menacing and hilarious. Rebecca Hall was sympathetic in a short amount of time. Guy Pearce was the perfect amount of suave and greasy. James Badge Dale was just awesome in his distinct lack of giving a crap. Even the kid, who is starting to be called “Mini-Tony”, was good. In fact, the scenes with the kid could have been the weakest parts as the dialogue could have gotten a little too campy or Ty Simpkins could have not been able to act but overall it turned out great.

There was a lot of Audi car-porn as well but for the most part it was managed, directors are starting to get more savvy on how to deal with the continued requirement of sponsors and making sure they get their money’s worth.

The only real problem is that this is the first film since Avengers and while Iron Man 3 is more thoughtful and overall a better film, it seems to pale in comparison to the sheer hilarity and action packed roller-coaster ride that was Avengers.

This hasn’t, though, hurt its box office receipts as it’s already made half, domestically, what the two previous films made.

The question now is whether or not we’ll see another Iron Man film or will Tony Stark/Iron Man only exist in the next Avengers movies and as possible cameo fodder for the other hero films? Personally, I kinda like the idea of ending the Iron Man movies here as it’s come full circle with his character.

But as in all things… only time will tell…

Bryan Singer has once again tweeted us a picture, this time of Ellen Page as Kitty Pryde.

The first two things: Yes, they fixed her hair and I kinda like that jacket. It’s like Steampunk meets Game of Thrones? Not sure about it being “Kitty-ish” but it’s cool, it’s post-Apocalyptic, I can dig it.

Secondly, that’s Bobby there on the edge almost cropped out of the image. These two are doing a scene together… and the expressions on their faces could literally mean anything…

There is clearly a lot of emotion in Ellen’s eyes… but her hands are clutched in front of her and there is space between them. So the eyes say ‘love’ but the stance say ‘friend zone’.

It doesn’t help that Shawn Ashmore replied to the post with “hello:)”.

So it looks like there is going to be some substance to their appearances in the film beyond cameos as these two do get a chance to talk and obviously there is something between them, unrequited or no. This lends towards the film having some kind of conclusion to the Bobby/Rogue storyline from the first three films… or at least I hope so. Even though I’m a Romy, I would at least like to see something definitive here.

I know, Rogue got the cure and they held hands and all that in X3 but that was just begging for a lot of emotional turmoil and an easily collapsible relationship… as many fan fics have eloquently pointed out.

Morbius: The Living Vampire #4Can we say set-up? Cause, yeah, that’s pretty much all this issue did, set Morbius up for a role he really doesn’t want to play… and really probably shouldn’t.

And that’s kinda unfortunate in that it’s really obvious… though hopefully Keatinge will do something different with it. The fact that Noah was a plant and not just some guy… and that Morbius was lead into going to Brownsville… does make me want to scratch my head a little. This is a good thing and is it means more is going on here than the obvious.

The Rose… yeah… I don’t know a heck of a lot about that character, well, characters, as different people have taken up that mantle over the years. My guess, this is a new Rose, a fifth Rose, which would leave a lot of doors open to have some interesting fun with the character as the villain. What’s his motivation to become The Rose? Could we see the birth of a villain while we see an anti-hero in his earliest creation?

I really hope so.

Wolverine and the X-Men #28I forget, were we supposed to care about Dog Logan?

This issue sees the wrap of that storyline… whatever it was… and there was a few interesting things that did come out of it. For one, Eye Boy actually kicked ass for five minutes… it was pretty epic. Quire showed that he isn’t as bad as he pretends to be and continues to be my guilty crush. As for Herman, well, let’s hope he gets whats coming to him.

So, yeah, as much as there was a great scene with the kids right there at the end, this whole arc has been kinda boring and pointless regarding Dog. We also got a bunch of existential crap from Logan that seemed a little meh.

The next issue seems to promise a look at the future of the school… we already got a glimpse of it before but that was a possible future… maybe… we’ll just have to see.

X-Treme X-Men #13X-Termination – Part Four. Seriously, why all the lack of love for Kurt? Poor boy just can’t catch a break…

Now, this is the final issue of X-Treme X-Men… though it’s not really over because the story continues into Astonishing X-Men and the final X-Termination issue… so… yeah… annoying. If you weren’t reading the other stuff then this is totally a crappy cliff-hanger-ish of an ending. Even if you are, there is no guarantee that those final two books, which aren’t written by Pak are going to really give an ending to these characters as they deserve… especially since it will have to deal with an ensemble cast.

What a crap way to leave us off… but at least the storyline will be ended… but it’s still crap.

Would I still recommend picking up the collection if you haven’t been reading it? Yeah, the books in the middle are very high quality and I love how they are done… I will definitely be on the look out for more of Pak’s work in the future.

And still a better ending than LOST…
