Review: Deadpool #4

Quick! How many US Presidents can you name!

That’s pretty much the gist of this issue of Deadpool. We’ve had 44 Presidents and 39 of them are currently undead and tearing things up. It’s still one of the most off the wall plot lines I’ve ever seen, even for Deadpool, but in a way it kinda works. You have the underlying political satire (which may or may not be on purpose) and the fact that this is Deadpool, this is like a Thursday for him.

But back to the Dead Presidents, there have been several Presidents that either had a lackluster run or were simply forgotten to time by the average Joe. This issue sees Deadpool quickly dispatching all the “D-List Presidents” and getting them out of the way for the “A-List Presidents” like Lincoln, Nixon, and J.F.K…. which, yeah, Deadpool should never, EVER, be allowed to dress up like Marilyn Monroe ever again. Just saying.

This leads up to a cage-match fight with Abe Lincoln, wherein Deadpool asks: “Did you ever go to Canada and put a short, hairy baby in a woman?” I can only guess he is referring to Logan but… why? That’s not something I want to envision!!!

Lastly, the art work on this issue still presents us with some of the grossest renderings of Wade’s skin and/or mutilated body. It really is gross.

The most remarkable thing about this title so far is that while it seems to be ‘all over the place’, it’s really not. There is a distinct train of thought, as crazy as it is, and each point is leading to the next. It’s definitely making for one of the strangest reads…

Review: A+X #4

Ever listen to a conversation that goes over your head but because of the way it’s told you either find it fascinating or hilarious? That’s pretty much what happens in the Beast and Spider-Man story of A+X #3.  Beast is in true form with his scientific laden speech and ‘Mr. Spider’ holds his own with his particular style of snark.

The story itself isn’t that clearly explained, but that’s okay, the point behind it is very well received in one of the best ‘odd couple’ scenes to be put to print in a long time (Spider-Man’s wrecked costume pretty much makes the scene). We’re also left to ponder just how strong Beast is, as a scientist, because of what he did and is capable of doing. I wonder if this means Beast will be having a larger role soon in the Marvel universe… or perhaps it’s best he stays low-key, otherwise he could end up pwning the whole galaxy, on accident.

As for Captain America and Kid Omega… nothing really new here. It’s your typical ‘stand up guy tries to teach troubled kid’ kind of story we’ve seen a thousand times. The only thing that saves it from being a very ‘meh’ story is the visuals that we’re given, such as Quentin’s shoulder angel and demon. I would have loved to seen them really try to go for something here but I guess that was too much to ask in just half a comic. It’s the kind of relationship that would need to be explored over a much larger arc.

The next issue sees none other than Iron Fist and Doop… they get this right and they will own the internets.

Anna Paquin as Rogue

Anna Paquin as Rogue

Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer has tweeted that Paquin, Page and Ashmore will be reprising their rolls as Rogue, Shadowcat, and Iceman in the upcoming film. This is in addition to previous news that Stewart, McKellen and Jackman will be reprising their roles as well.

Odds are, these are only going to be cameo performances. I say this because they are kinda bunched together here. Then there is the fact Paquin and Ashmore have their own tv shows to work on, True Blood and The Following. Granted, that hasn’t stopped some actors from making movies but could cause scheduling issues. Paquin also just had twins which might affect how much time she wants to spend off somewhere filming.

Also, Singer went after Stewart, McKellen and Jackman first which denotes that they likely have larger, more important, roles which needed to be locked down. This goes into my theory that Wolverine will be the one doing the time traveling rather than Shadowcat because she’s much to young in the original movies to be able to go back to the 60s/70s.

Odds are, these three will be shown standing around providing exposition right before the fateful trip. There is also the possibility of a little action, maybe they’re protecting against Sentinels and what not while Xavier sends whoever back in time, but again depends on what these guys signed up for.

Some pointed out that Bryan said “thank you @BrettRatner for letting them live!” which means we’ll see no Cyclops (who was treated poorly in the movies) or Jean Grey or anyone else who died. Well, Xavier kinda died and he’s back. Jean Grey does nothing but die and come back. Also, wouldn’t that be a great way to show that the world has indeed been changed by whatever happens in DOFP? With Cyclops being alive?

In the end, I did not like what they did with Rogue in X3, she wasn’t any more Rogue than Ryan Reynolds was Deadpool at the end of X:O:W. As long as DOFP gives us that glimmer that everything has been changed, that X1-3 are now ‘alt-universe’ movies, then I’ll be happy.

From CinemaBlend: Doctor Strange, Ant-Man Confirmed As Marvel Phase Three Films

The Marvel executive tells MTV News that a Doctor Strange movie “is definitely one” of the movies planned in [the Phase Three] stage of release, joining Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man as a Marvel movie we’ll see in theaters after The Avengers 2

“He’s a great, original character, and he checks the box off this criteria that I have,” Feige says of Doctor Strange. “He’s totally different from anything else we have, just like Guardians of the Galaxy. He’s totally different from anything we’ve done before, as is Ant-Man, which keeps us excited.”

Which begs the question, will Marvel treat him as ‘real magic’ or will they try to find a plausible scientific explanation? Also, I know she’s not really known to work with Strange, but if they don’t introduce Wanda in Phase Two, then they could easily give her a role in a Doctor Strange movie. Yes, I have a bit of a one-track mind. 😉

Justice League Movie CastIt’s not been confirmed but the line up for the new Justice League movie Warners Bros has slated for a 2015 will be: Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and The Flash.

This seems likely as while there have been others in the Justice League at various times, these five are perhaps the most notable, which is a good thing seeing as there is no word yet if Henry Cavill and Ryan Reynolds will be reprising their roles as Superman and Green Lantern. We already know Christian Bale will not be reprising his role as Batman as the JL movie will be removed from Nolan’s Batman universe and Batman could be rebooted as early as 2017. So, assuming Cavill and Reynolds are back, then their movies would be the ‘set up’ or ‘phase one’ of the DC Film-Verse which would culminate in the Justice League movie, but three out of five major characters will not have an origin movie.

Good thing these characters are recognizable… but are they really anymore so than the Avengers cast before the ‘Phase One – Avengers Assembled’ films were released:

Batman and Superman are basically Iron Man. It could be argued that when Iron Man came out he wasn’t that recognizable beyond people knowing his name but the first movie catapulted his status to that of Bats and Supes. Phase One hadn’t really started yet so that movie counts. When Phase One really got going, you’d have to have been living under a rock not to have heard of Iron Man.

Wonder Woman is pretty much The Hulk. Both had wildly successful tv series, but ever since they’ve had issues with getting a decent movie off the ground and/or getting decent people to play them. They’re fairly recognizable characters though no one can name a single person in these character’s rogue’s gallery or their origin story beyond a few tidbits, unless they were already fans.

Green Lantern is Captain America. You can’t not have heard of these guys if you poked your nose anywhere around the comic-verse, but other than having one crappy movie (Captain America in 1990, Green Lantern in 2011) and being in other character’s animated shows, they haven’t gotten much love outside the comic-verse.

Flash, well, he really is Thor. They are two characters who people have heard of but get confused with other characters (mythology, Flash Gordan, Venom (true story!)). Also, they’re two characters who have had tv shows and movies no one remembers.

As for Black Widow and Hawkeye, they will be represented by whatever little-known-outside-the-comics characters end up getting picked for the supporting cast. They will then see skyrocketed comic book sales, their own solo titles, and possibly their own movie.

But again, only two of these characters (possibly one if they want to strike the tragedy that was Green Lantern off the record) will have introduction/origin movies. Will this help or hinder the effort?

Let’s look at the Phase One movies, here is a breakdown of how much money they made at the box office thanks to Box Office Mojo:

2008Iron Man – 318mil domestic – 585mil total (for comparison)
2008Incredible Hulk – 135mil domestic – 263mil total
2010Iron Man 2 – 312mil domestic – 624 total
2011Captain America – 177mil domestic – 367mil total
2011Thor – 181mil domestic – 449mil total

2012Avengers – 623mil domestic – 1.5billion total

Not only did the individual origin movies not come anywhere near Iron Man (save maybe Thor’s total take), even Iron Man fell into the shadow of the Avengers film itself.

Why is this so? Was Avengers just that much better than all the other movies?

While it was quality, you also have to take into account that Avengers pulled together fans of every single one of those characters. Those who watched Iron Man may not have cared to see Thor. Those who watched Captain American possibly didn’t care about The Incredible Hulk.

So the question now becomes… how are the sequels going to do? How many people who didn’t care about Thor and Loki went out and watched Thor after they watched Avengers? How many of those will be going to see Thor: The Dark World when it comes out? We won’t really know for sure until we see the numbers.

How does this affect the Justice League movie?

Avengers may have needed to let you get to know the other characters because it couldn’t rely on the draw of Iron Man and comic readers alone, but Batman and Superman are guaranteed to be a big draw. Not only do they have masses of individual fans (which goes well beyond the comics) who want to see them, but they want to see them interact. No matter the quality of the movie, we can expect to see very large numbers out in mass for opening weekend.

But what if the Justice League movie is terrible?

Then back to the drawing board with no money lost on origin films that went nowhere, but also, like Green Lantern, it might be years before they touch on the character ever again. Though they could go the route of making tv shows like Arrow and Amazon which is in pre-pre-production. They have a lot of options, only a few we’d actually like to see.

But what if the movie is actually really good?

Those who went to go see Bats and Supes are introduced to three other characters that, if they are done right, will basically have the ‘Hawkeye effect’ and people will want to see them in their own movie. This means when WB sinks money into a WW movie with the same actress, in the same universe, then they are guaranteed better returns than if they tried to go solo before Justice League, an idea that they had but seems to have been dropped.

The only issue would be that they couldn’t do prequel movies because that would be annoying, but it would be easy enough to put their origins in there as either a quick 15 minutes at the beginning or parceled throughout the film (as long as it’s done right).

So, is it a smart move by Warner Brothers to work backwards?

They’ve already been accused of trying to ride on the back of the Avengers box office smash… but then Batman and Superman are literally much bigger characters in their own right and could carry a team-up movie with so much ease it should be criminal. The fact they haven’t done it before now should be punished as a capital offence. Maybe it took a kick in the pants for them to get around to it but it was a long time coming.

As for GL, WW, and Flash… I think the fact that Green Lantern made 116mil domestic, half of that on opening weekend before the news came down of its quality, proves that the audience is there for these movies, maybe not 300mil domestic like Iron Man right now, but they are there. But really, as long as they start putting out good films, they will be able to hold against Disney/Marvel, if not surpass them… but with a rash of really bad superhero movies in Green Lantern and Superman Returns, and the retirement of the Nolan-verse Batman movies, they need a shining beacon of ‘yes, yes we can make good movies!’.

Man of Steel logoWe do have Man of Steel coming up later this year, but will that be enough? We were already let down by a Superman movie and so wary eyes are on this film. If it’s a great film then it will definitely help the cause, if it terrible then at least it could be kicked under the rug.

In the end, the Justice League movie is the crux of the entire DC film franchise. Supes and Bats will always have their place on screen but if Justice League fails then it will take everything else down with it. If it succeeds then it is a literal blank check for Warner Bros to bring all our favorite DC characters to life.

So yes, this really is the best move by Warner Bros. Marvel’s Avengers had a fairly blank slate to start with while Justice League has a lot of recent history with most of the characters, either through failed movies or the failure to make a movie. They need a reset button, they need a point to start, and this is it.

Granted, the reset button does look an awful lot like the self destruct button… but that can be entertaining in its own right.

io9 writer Rob Bricken answers letters in a column called Postal Apocalypse. In the January 23rd, 2013, edition, he answers a letter and attempts to explain “Why Nerds Freak Out About Things“. It’s published below in its entirety.

Superman’s Gal Pal

John W.: I got really upset when I heard the rumor that Jimmy Olsen might be “Jenny Olson” in Man of Steel, and then I instantly chided myself. It doesn’t matter, obviously. It‘s not going to really affect Superman in any way. And certainly it’s sexist to disapprove of the gender swap. I know this. I agree with this. But then why am I still kind of consternated about this?

Well, the good news is that you’re handling this is well as you can. For any fan, any kind of change is generally a shock. What matters is if you can look at yourself and realize it’s not actually important. If it’s something in the touchier sex or race category, feeling bad about your own kneejerk prejudice is good –- it’s how we grow more tolerant, actually.

But regarding your consternation, the problem is that you’re a fan. In my head there’s an elaborate math theorem that explains exactly why and how much fans freak when something changes in their favorite franchise. It involves:

• The popularity/prominence of the character/franchise
• How long the character has been around, and how pravelent he/she/it is
• Which medium the character is being presented in
• How much variety the character’ has had already (how many different and/or unusual ways has he/she/it been presented already), both in general and that particular medium
• How great the change is from the character’s fundamentals
• The actual quality of the change

I haven’t gotten the formula worked out, because I’m even worse as math than I am at sports, but I think those factors all directly affect fan freak-outs. So the reason you care about the Jimmy Olson sex change is because it’s a new presentation of the character that we haven’t seen before. New is different and scary, etc. etc.

But the reason you only care a little is because 1) you know Jimmy Olson is not that big a deal, 2) you recognize a gender swap is specifically not a big deal to Jimmy Olson’s fundamental character. It might bring up a slight issue of romantic tension between Superman and “Jenny,” but probably not. I’m guessing you’re not even slightly upset about Laurence Fishburne being cast as the traditionally white Perry White, because 1) White is less important to Superman than Jimmy is, and 2) as Clark Kent’s boss, White’s race doesn’t affect his relationship with Superman in the slightest.

This is also why, in my opinion, people freak out more about superhero movies than comics, because we’ve had so much fewer of them. Over the last 70+ years, Spider-Man has been presented in all sorts of ways — adventure, comedy, horror, sci-fi, he’s been in the future, he’s been Iron Spider, he’s been a half-Latino, half-African-American teen –- so the character has an extremely wide range of ways he’s been portrayed. But he’s only had four movies, all of them played pretty straight to the most basic version of the character, which is why more people freak out when they hear about almost any sort of change happening in the Spidey movies.

Remember when Raimi first announced the organic webshooters? People lost their minds, and really — really — how Spider-Man shoots his webs is almost completely inconsequential, as long as he shoots them. When the rumor went around that Spider-Man might be played by Donald Glover, people freaked out at the idea of a black Spider-Man, because we’d had so few Spider-Man movies to establish the norms (also: racism). But when Marvel announced Miles Morales as the new Spidey in the comics? Some mild grumbling that Marvel was merely pulling a publicity stunt, but no one came as close to losing their minds as they did over Glover, which was still less of a deal than the webshooters in Spider-Man’s first film presentation. But wait another Spider-Man movie trilogy or two — create a larger base of “standard” Spider-Man movies -– and people will begin to feel more comfortable with changes. I guarantee it.

Note: There are a ton of other, smaller variables here. Obviously, the fact that Miles Morales is in the Ultimate universe and not the main universe certainly helped minimize freak-outs. Also, a lot depends on you personally; I’m sure there’s someone who’s collected every issue of Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen who is losing his goddamn mind that Jimmy might Jenny in Man of Steel, because the character is super important to him. But overall? Not that big a deal. Sorry for the super-long answer, though!
