Spoilers ahead though only if you’re one of those who never watch teaser trailers. Oh, and Evan Peters literally quoted his character directly from the comics… good sign.

From io9

We saw the first teaser of X-Men: Days of Future Past just now at San Diego Comic-Con, and it was the most exciting X-Men moment in a decade. Here’s our rough impressions of what we saw. UPDATE: More details added!

Spoilers ahead…

Seriously, I hope this footage shows up online soon, because my description is not going to do it justice. There was a lot going on here. We saw it twice, so I’m adding more details from the second watching.

We see a closeup of Patrick Stewart’s eye, and someone (Stewart) asks, “What’s the last thing you remember?” Professor X (Stewart) responds, “I had a glimpse into the past.”Then Professor X tells Wolverine, “You’re going to have to do for me what I once did for you.” We slowly zoom out from Professor X’s aged face, and then we see him with a Cerebro helmet on, and later coming out of the Cerebro chamber.

And this is a dark dystopian future, where the dark, fetishy costumes are looking more dirty and distress and messed up, and Professor X and Ian McKellen’s Magneto seem weary and filled with dread. They’re in a war chamber in front of a table that shows how badly things are going. Wolverine even has a bit of gray in his facial hair.

We see flashes of all our favorite mutants, including Storm against a stormy sky, Ellen Page as Kitty Pryde, and some others. And there are futuristic-looking mutants, including  Omar Sy as Bishop, and some others I couldn’t identify wearing dramatic Mad Max-y makeup.

We learn that Professor X and Magneto have come together “side by side, to end this war before it ever begins.”

Wolverine asks, “So I wake up in my younger body, and then what?” Professor X responds, “Find me, convince me of all this.” And Magneto chimes in that Wolverine will find younger Magneto a different person, “a darker person.” We catch glimpses of 1970s versions of Magneto and Professor X — with a lot more hair and a lot more fire to them. Young Professor X has a crazy beard and a 1970s groovy outfit with an X-shaped light on his face, while Young Magneto (Michael Fassbender) is waving a gun.

We see Young Professor X blowing dust off a white globe.

Back then, Professor X says, “I was a very different man. Lead me, guide me, be patient with me.” We see Young Professor X putting his hands on someone’s face as he tries to understand. Maybe Wolverine’s face?

Older Wolverine responds, “Patience isn’t my strong suit.”

And then blue glowing hands are gripping Wolverine’s head, sending him back in time into the body of his younger self.

We catch glimpses of other stuff — Young Magneto using his powers to pull a distressed Mystique along the floor. Young Magneto descending from the air looking scary. There is a mysterious opening under the Oval Office, revealed by the oval opening up like a trapdoor. And protests in the street, and Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage) addressing a government hearing. And Richard Nixon looking weird and terrifying — and then Mystique walking down the street changing into a man in a pimp suit.

There is a LOT of stuff blowing up, and Young Professor X using Magneto, and the Beast attacking, a woman walking away from an airplane, and a military setting. We glimpse Professor X shielding his face from an intense white light, and the Cerebro machine exploding.

Young Professor X says, “I don’t want your suffering. I don’t want your future.”

And then Old Professor X is face to face with his younger self. He says: “Please. We need you to hope again.” It’s an actual spine-tingling moment. Actual goosebumps here.

In the panel, we met Omar Sy, who told us that Bishop is visiting from the future and just trying to survive, like everyone. Also on the panel: Peter Dinklage confirmed he really is playing Bolivar Trask.

And Evan Peters was here, as the new Quicksilver. Asked to describe his character, Peters said: “He’s very fast. He’s quick. He’s a spaz. He talks quick, he moves quick, everybody is very slow compared to him. He’s always at an ATM waiting for the bastard in front of him to finish.”

“He’s got excellent genes,” added Michael Fassbender, who plays his father, Magneto.

Someone asks what sort of costume Quicksilver will have, and Singer responds: “It’ll be a seventies costume. I had grown up as a kid in the 1970s and I had forgotten how hideous some of the clothing was back then.”

Someone asked if we might get a Deadpool movie, and Bryan Singer wouldn’t confirm that one will happen — but he did say the X-Men universe is as big as the rest of the Marvel universe, and there’s enough room for a ton of X-Men films developing all the different characters and corners of the universe, building it out.

Someone asked Jackman about musicals, and he said he would never sing as Wolverine. The crowd was disappointed, so he gave us a taste of what a Wolverine musical would be like: “I’m gonna slice ’em, I’m gonna dice ’em,” he sang operatically.

Someone asked the assembled cast which X-Men character, other than their own, they would want to play. Patrick Stewart responded: “I would like to play any female character in any X-Men movie, because then I would have a chance of winning an Academy Award.” (Because three of the women in the X-Men have won Oscars.)

Iain McKellen said: “If I can’t play the younger Magneto, then I would like to grow wings and play Angel.”

Oh, and in the panel for The Wolverine before we saw this footage, Hugh Jackman gave a shoutout to Wolverine co-creator Len Wein, who was in the audience, and it was really gracious and awesome.

And here it is, the first full trailer for X-Men: The (fan fic) Series. This trailer encompasses the first episode (story) only. A larger trailer which will touch on the first half of the first season will be coming next month.

XMTFFS: Trailer #1

From the fan fiction writers who gave you X-Men: Among Thieves,
Squeaky and Stripes, and the Gym Class (Anti) Hero series,
comes an all new X-Men fan fic series unlike
anything you’ve seen before.

“Magneto will continue to escalate until he’s given the government no choice but to declare war on the Brotherhood,” Storm spoke with surety and sadness in her voice, “and that war will spill over into non-combatants both mutant and human alike.”

“We can’t sit idly by when we have a chance to do something to protect ourselves, our kind, and everyone caught in the middle,” Scott told the group gathered.

“I wish you’d let me deal with those trouble makers,” Logan emphasized his words with a snikt.

“As I have said many times, Logan,” Charles replied sternly, “I will not let you be party to murder on my account.”

“Truth of the matter is, Professor,” Scott spoke with a released fervor, “we’re out-gunned. Magneto’s Acolytes, this is what they do.”

“Well, at least you’re learning,” Rogue frowned as she took in the high collar leather biker jacket Logan wore, with matching full gloves, leaving only the skin of his head vulnerable to her touch. “What we at now, 12-8?”

“I don’t keep track,” he said with a growl, releasing the adamantium claws in his other hand.

“Sure ya do,” she winked, then made her move.

Part of the floor gave way under Cyclops who dropped with it onto the level below.

“So, what, you’re creating ice out of the air moisture?”

“Yeah,” Bobby furrowed his brow in confusion at Pyro’s polite conversation, his eyes darting side to side as if he was expecting to be attacked, “pretty much.”

Pyro sighed and shook his head lightly, “That’s so not fair.”

Clicking at his control pad, the Australian grinned as a streak of green flame shot out from the nozzle of his flamethrower and he kept pumping fuel into a menagerie of mythical beasts of at least two sphinx, a Cerberus, a dragon, a couple of centaurs, and one drop bear…

Frustrated at her inability to land a strike on exposed flesh, Rogue let out an involuntary growl as she turned to face him.

“Same ol’ moves there, skunk,” Wolverine brought his claws up.

She raised her fists, “Bring it, short stack.”

Charles regarded the young man for a long moment, “What are you suggesting, Scott?”

“That we have a dedicated team as well,” he was expecting the Professor to say something. When he didn’t, Scott continued. “That we train together, learn how to work in-synch with each other, and how best to contain the Acolytes. Otherwise, we might as well stay home next time something happens.”

Again, the older gentleman was quiet before finally asking, “And who would be on this team?”

“I don’t think you quite understand what Scott’s asking,” of the three, John-Paul was the most reserved about the situation, “he’s wanting you to fight,” his eyes flicked over to Scott’s, “to be a soldier.”

“They’re watching their teachers train for what is essentially a war,” Wolverine gruffed, “and you’re worried about a little Canadian brew?”

“I’m not sure about this,” Scott frowned as he stood fifty feet from Jean Grey out on the lawn.

“I’ve been successful in testing this.”

“I understand that, but,” he really didn’t like the idea of shooting his optic beam directly at the woman, “I don’t want to hurt you.”

“You’re not going to hurt me, Scott,” she smiled at him, one full of faith, “you could never hurt me, trust me.”

“Just ‘cause I’m a cryokinetic,” Bobby was standing in front of a row of Roman Candle fireworks, each one lit at a different time and shooting out the little balls of fire at random intervals, “why do I have to deal with the crazy pyrokinetic?”

Scott winced at the word ‘soldier’, “More like a policeman, or a fireman.”

“Ain’t much of a difference from where I stand,” John-Paul would be the one to know.

“I have no interest in creating an army,” Scott assured him, “but Magneto needs to be stopped, for everyone’s sake.”

“Excuse me,” a voice said behind them and they turned around to see the thin wisp of a figure that was Katherine Pryde standing with her hands on her hips. “I want in.”

“Logan isn’t a team player and John-Paul is a soldier. Both know you have more experience with dealing with Magneto and the Brotherhood, they’ll follow your lead as long as you don’t screw up,” Jean gave Scott a wink, “no pressure.”

“You might want to remind Charles that the Brotherhood is stepping up their game, the government is a tension line ready to snap in all directions.”

“This processor,” Kitty paused as she formed her words, knowing that at least one of them would yell at her to speak English if she said what she really wanted to, “it’s the core of a prototype lattice system to hold a unique A.I. software program. It takes the concept of the terrorist tracker and expands on it, like, a thousand fold. It’s an auto hacking, real time tracking, A.I. that will break into anything, private security, phone lines, hospital and doctor computers, you name it. Then it looks for patterns and specific tell-tale signs of mutations.”

“Men like Magneto are exactly why Department H decided to go the way of the Weapon X program.”

“It feels like an arms race,” the regal looking Storm said bluntly, “but Magneto will continue his proliferation regardless of what we, or the government, do. I do not like it, but if we are to have any hope of protecting ourselves and maintaining some kind of peace, we have to be able to meet him head on.”

“We all know what’s coming,” Kitty looked past Storm to the rest of the team, “Magneto intends to start a war and it’s my generation who are going to be the ones fighting it.”

“Not if we can help it,” Scott assured her.

“But you don’t know if you can, do you.”

“You think we’re doing the right thing?”

“I wouldn’t have joined your team if I thought otherwise,” Jean’s normally dazzling smile fell a few notches, “are you having second thoughts?”

“No, I…” Scott adjusted his ruby specs as he tried to put a voice to what he was feeling, “I still believe we need to do this, be pro-active, and I know it was my idea, but… when did this become my team?”

Bobby was running for his life, literally, making it out to the middle of the street as he was chased by a green fire-breathing dragon, amongst other things. He turned just in time to throw up an ice wall which the dragon slammed into, losing most of its substance, so it reformed into two smaller eagles.

Spotting Avalanche, Scott’s hand went to his visor and this time he led the target as the man attempted to dodge and struck Avalanche with his optic beam sending the Greek mutant against a nearby lamp post which buckled and fell over.

Scott listened to Jean’s words but he couldn’t help thinking, “So I get to be the leader by default?”

“No,” she said softly, “you get it because you’re the right man for the job.”

“Sentinel?” Scott asked.

“That’s the A.I.,” Kitty explained, “they named it Sentinel, and once it’s online… there’s nowhere we can hide where it can’t find us.”

“We’ll carry on with our plans,” Magneto told his gathered Acolytes, “you’ll simply have to be better prepared for the… Boy Scout troop.”

“X-Men,” Rogue blurted out as the name rang loudly in her head, “they call themselves the X-Men.”

“Ah, come on,” Kitty frowned, “I thought Canadians were supposed to be all nice and personable… and nice.”

“How many Canadians do you actually know?” John-Paul asked dryly.

“Well, you…” she had to think for a second, “and Logan.”

The Wolverine was standing off to the side with his arms crossed, an annoyed look on his face, and a growl rumbling through his chest.

Kitty sighed, “Stereotypes suck.”

X-Treme X-Men #11Moral ambuiguity is a bit of an unlaying theme in this title and this issue really underscored that. I’m not entirely sure who the bad guy was… but as far as Dazzler was concerned, everyone was the bad guy.

Speaking of, Dazzler has really taken a harder edge to her character, she has not been uneffected by the events that have transpired, and her powers are actually pretty kick butt. Could she always use them like this? Regardless, I hope the growth the character received in this title filters into wherever she goes next. I’ve garnered a new respect for Dazzler.

You can tell though that the story is wrapping up, even with the cliffhanger of an ending you know that it’s just way to build up to a finale… and that kinda sucks. It’s really hard to read something when you know it’s about to end especially when it’s just gotten going.

Quiet

Sorry, been a little inactive the past two weeks. I got involved in watching Fairy Tail, a 175 episode long Anime which is awesome. Unfortunately the marathoning of episodes was too addictive and I didn’t get anything done. I have a stack of comics to review, some stuff to write, and news updates to post. I should get back on schedule tomorrow!

p.s. I do recommend watching Fairy Tail… just be aware that it will suck you in and take over your life until you finish…

Something I’m working on via a friend’s blog. I am a huge fan of the X-Files, it is one of the shows that really influenced my writing and how I look at story structure and television. I’ll be rewatching classic episodes and blogging about them, have a look-see.

You might think that since all these characters have been pre-named, I don’t have to really worry or think about that aspect of their character, if only.

Jeanne-Marie Beaubier, otherwise known as Aurora, is one of those cases that is troublesome. The main question being, how do you pronounce Jeanne? Is it Gene or Genie? This is a pretty important question because we already have a major character named Jean, i.e. Jean Grey.

I did a poll of my friends and their vote was pretty much unanimously “Gene”.

Now, visually, there is an obvious different in the names and under normal Fan Fiction circumstances I’d leave it at that. However, if this is played out like a tv show, then audibly we have two characters named Jean. Granted, two people with the same name working/living together is not uncommon, I’ve even worked with another woman who shared my name. And it’s because of this I know that something is going to have to give and some kind of alternate name/nickname is going to have to be used. (how do you think I earned the nickname JayCee?)

We can nix the use of Jeanne-Marie outside of specific circumstances because, well, we’re lazy. We like to shorten names and give nick names. Jeanne has one, Aurora, but that is her alternate personality so I have to reserve that name for that personality.

I considered JM but it doesn’t roll off the tongue or seem as fitting as John-Paul’s JP. I thought about turning it into Jem, but that’s way to 80s and something Jubilee would do.

My last thought, which is probably the one I’ll have to go for, is Marie. The problem with Marie is that we sorta/kinda have another Marie. Rogue’s name in the comics is Anna Marie and her name in the movies is just Marie. Thing is, no one knows her real name in the comics and it won’t be revealed for some time (if that really is her name in this series, spoilers, it’s not, one of my changes I’ll highlight in a separate post on a later date).

I still have time to think about this before I have to settle on exactly what everyone will call her, after all, the first episode doesn’t go live for another year. However, I’m looking at six months till every episode is ready to go bar last-minute grammar edits.

This is just another small little tweak that may seem insignificant but makes this series that much more than your average fan fic.

I was posting everything on here under the name “JayCee’s RedGold” which is my FanFiction.net handle, but I’ve decided to shorten everything to JayCee. The reason being is that RedGold is my Jedi Council Forum’s handle where I started writing fan fiction. When I went over to FF.net I too my RvB handle which I prefer and smushed them together since I’d be re-posting some of my SW fan fic.

In the end, I prefer JayCee as my handle (not that I don’t like RedGold but it was picked out for my by a morally deviant Ewok). So JayCee is JayCee’s RedGold for any future reference.
