Wolverine and the X-Men #19

Wolverine and the X-Men #19

Review: Wolverine and the X-Men #19

After #18 really annoyed me in its dark nature and shooting of a fun character I was really liking, I was glad to see that WatX was more rounded. It had a few dark bits, mostly to do with Kilgore and his band of sociopathic psychos, but the more fun elements were there.

I love all the little cameos by characters coming to try out for a teaching position at the school. Blade actually might have been a good one to hire, as long as you can keep him a bit more on the tamer side. As for Deadpool, I like how he didn’t even get half his name out before he’s rejected, not that he doesn’t try.

Good to see that Broo isn’t completely dead and has a chance at surviving. I really liked him! Him and Idie made a very interesting couple/non-couple and I hate how it left off in #18. Idie, on the other hand, is still suffering from some the psychological whammo that done to her, though yeah, it is kinda hard to tell where that and her original mental issues border, but still.

Lastly, Storm is back, yay! Since Uncanny had ended I didn’t know if she was going to stick with regular X-Men and that be her only title (I think that’s the only other one she’s been in?). Though it’s possible she could go into the background like Rogue and Gambit (which leads me to also wonder if those two will get any more face time, esp since Rogue is now only in Uncanny Avengers).

Overall, liking the upswing, let’s hope they keep this up.

Now this is how you end a comic who only got a paltry twenty issue run.

Sure, it’s mostly just talking which is what was in X-Men Legacy #275, but the content was the important part. Tied up, somewhat, are the loose ends regarding Danger and the Rasputin’s, both story lines left to be picked up later at Marvel’s leisure. As for Cyclops…

Damn. I knew it.

You can’t kill Sinister, he’s just too cool. And this issue proved that point to a T.

This very much felt like a sweeps episode, an ending which leaves so much open and you’re a-okay with that because you want to see what happens next, it’s just too cool to simply tie up with a bow. It also leaves open a plot for Cyclops to take on later if he ever gets out of jail… we’ll have to see what happens in Consequences and All-New X-Men.

Yes, I do like this. Perhaps if the series had gone on for longer it would have been more annoying to have it so open-ended, but this definitely worked for Uncanny X-Men. I can’t wait to see more Sinister in the future!

X-Men Legacy #275

Review: X-Men Legacy #275

With the new Marvel NOW! initiative, X-Men Legacy got the axe to be replaced by a new series with Legion as the lead. So Legacy #275 is the finale comic of this mostly Rogue led title. As finale’s go… it’s just kind of there.

Basically, because all of the other characters are off doing their own thing now, Rogue and Mimic are the only ones in this formally team-title. And they are thrown together into a minor (by X-Men standards) fight where Rogue is allowed to give a whole bunch of speeches as she dictates about how she has changed over the past few years.

On its face that’s not necessarily a bad thing, I mean, she has changed and this is a big moment for her, dumping Mags, going off Avenging, becoming something more than herself… but did we really need a whole comic of speech bubbles?

So over all, a lackluster ending, but hey, could be worse… could have been a clip-episode.

Today marks the beginning of National Novel Writing Month.

This will be the first year I’m participating in it, working on an original story though now I wonder if I should have went for a sequel to Among Thieves… oh well, too late now!

Of course, NaNoWriMo will cut into my script writing time for XMTFFS, but I’ve given myself a decent lead I think I’ll be okay.

CW's Arrow

CW’s Arrow

Review: Arrow (1S04) An Innocent Man

I’m just going to start calling this tv show Plot Hole… cause that’s pretty much how everything gets done. The most glaring was how the hit man, with little to no prompting, suddenly decides to confess off camera. Say what now?

Not to mention Laurel or Dinah, whatever, flip flops so badly it’s not even character development, it’s a mental defect. Seriously?

The only saving grace in this episode is Diggle who is awesome. His dry wit really shined in this episode. Also, finding that momma had the boat brought up from the sea bed and apparently step-daddy doesn’t know anything about it… I admit, did not see that coming.

Nice cameo from Captain Jack Harkness as well, but not enough to go by really.

So far this show hasn’t gotten any worse but it hasn’t gotten any better either. Its contrived plot points which create big gaping holes is worse than any comic book. If they can tighten things up then we really got something here, but until then, Arrow is still good filler before Supernatural.

On a completely random side note, every time I see an ad for Vampire Diaries, I keep thinking how great of a Gambit Ian Somerhaulder would be…

I know, this is an X-Men/Marvel blog, but after hearing the news that Disney bought Lucasfilm, I had to say something. See, I’ve had what can only be described as an abusive relationship with Star Wars. Every time I try to break it off it sucks me back in. I thought I had it this time. I stopped any and all connects with Star Wars outside talking to the friends I made in the community. I thought I was free…

And then Disney buys Lucasfilm, announce Episode 7 in 2015 and I’m sucked back in again.

Disney and Marvel gave us the current Avengers and related movies (so this kinda related?). These movies have been spectacular but these were Disney AND Marvel. Will the same dynamic work with Disney and Lucasfilm? I want to say yes, after all, Disney made a great movie in John Carter (even though the marketing was crap) and they have/had a great relationship with Pixar as well.

So does this mean that Episode 7 will be good?

Define good.

Binary Disney

Binary Disney – Stolen from Facebook – Artist Unknown

My fandom goes deep into the expanded universe (EU) and I have come to the conclusion that Episode 7 will wipe the EU into alt universe land. Why? For one, they already said that they were left a whole bunch of stuff from Lucas and Lucasfilm regarding Episode 7 and where the franchise is supposed to go. I seriously doubt that Lucas (who has a history of ignoring the EU in the prequels) made any considerations for the EU in his ‘series bible’ as it where.

Secondly, if they wanted to go EU, where to start? If they want to recast, they could go back to a few years post ROTJ (aka Thrawn Trilogy) but as much as those books rocked, they will want to go with more contained and sweeping stories because this would be more accessible to new viewers (not to mention that TT would have to be rewritten in a lot of places to be Prequel consistent). I know, I sound like a heretic, but TT was great books but they won’t play on the big screen the same reason a lot of books adapted for movies just don’t work in the end.
Now, if they don’t recast and manage to get everyone back, well, sorry Mark, Carrie and Harrison, but you are all old, which means this would largely be about your kids… and yeah, the EU kinda screwed you over on that one. There is way to much to have happened to try to explain and just starting from scratch is better.

So the EU will be turned AU. I accept this. In a way, I want this.

See, the EU went down hill the moment they got an editor who, since they couldn’t kill off Luke Skywalker, decided to do the next best thing. The Vong was just stupid, and the stupid continued until there was so much stupidity abounding that only so hardcore they’re disillusioned, or those who actually think this is so stupid it must be brilliant, actually like the EU any more.

But there is a small hope. Just cause the storylines are gone doesn’t mean the characters are.

Boba Fett surviving the Sarlacc is a given seeing as he was shoe horned into the Prequels.
As for the rest… anything is up for grabs. I’d like to say Mara is a given as a Luke love-interest but her background would have to be adjusted (I could see her as a former member of Imperial Intelligence)… but for all we know Lucas had other ideas for Luke’s future and Mara (or any girlfriend) isn’t a part of it. She could still rock as a Jedi student… but again, where are they going to take this? Will him setting up a new Academy be a vital plot point or mearly a passing comment between fighting the big baddy? Speaking of big baddies… if the Vong show up, that’s it, I quit. As for other baddies, there are a lot to chose from but again, they may want to go original.

In the end, we may get characters from the EU but will they be those characters or shadows of their former selves? Too early to tell but the fact that they are going off notes at least opens the possibility for whatever screenwriter they get to polish off the script to perhaps embrace the EU.

That’s the thing isn’t it… it’s all too early. Disney could do so much good… or they could do so much wrong. Could they do any worse than Lucas? Actually, Yes. They really could. Will they? I have enough faith that it won’t go that far…

but at this moment, I’m once again sucked back into this abusive relationship with Star Wars and unless the words Vong are mentioned I will be right there to watch Episode 7 at its midnight showing…

All this… and right when I fully dedicated myself to another fandom…

Damn you Star Wars!!! Why can’t I quit you!!!

“When did we get to Disneyland?”

It’s official. According to ComingSoon.net, Bryan Singer will take over the helm of X-Men: Days of Future Past. While Vaughn staying on would have been better, can’t say this troubles me as all.

Fox released the new teaser one-sheet for The Wolverine and I snagged it thanks to CinemaBlend. Now, Fox has had a bad run of X-Men posters lately, I mean, all of their FC posters were bad photo-shops and completely devoid of any imagination. But with The Wolverine… I think they have a winner.

The Wolverine Teaser One-Sheet

The Wolverine Teaser One-Sheet

Thanks to our new Production Designer Sheepykipz, we have a new banner for the site which is sssoooo much nicer than what I made. We’ll have a new background and avatar soon as well. Yay!

As CinemaBlend pointed out, in this still from The Wolverine, Logan is sporting bone claws.

still from The Wolverine

Now, we’re pretty sure Magneto isn’t in The Wolverine. If McKellen has been tapped for this movie, we would all know by now, and I doubt him losing his metal ala the comics is something that would be more than a cameo anyway.

So that leaves flashback…

But why? At first I thought ‘they really need to bring in more Origin stuff?’ but then it occured to me that he’s not so much in a cave but a pit. This is probably related to the scenes where he is in that POW looking camp. Odds are this is background/setup as to why he’s in Japan and attending a funeral, probably of someone he met at this moment in time.

So I’m cool with this.

Random thought: Would it be cool if this was actually the Easter Egg, Logan trapped in a cave with bone claws and Jean comes to save him but Logan is all “you’re dead”… tantalizing… but yeah, not gonna happen.
