X-Men: Legacy #12Now it makes sense for David to have been wearing the Marty McFly jacket before, because the guy does know how to manipulate the time stream.

However, I can’t help but feel a little WTF about him letting Marcus get killed. Sure, the man was a puppet for Red Skull, but that’s hardly his own fault. Yes, the group could be considered very dangerous for mutants, but simply discrediting them would be a far better choice than simply letting the man die like that.

Just seems a little cold blooded.

And David doesn’t seem to be any close to stopping or changing up his path of pre-emptive attacks. This can all go downhill very quickly.

Review: Gambit #15

Gambit #15Gambit naked, holding kittens, does it really get any better than that?

Apparently, yes, because in the next panels he’s impersonating Hawkeye (remember he stole his wallet in A+X #3) and the whole thing just made me squeal like a little girl.

Then Gambit plays detective for a bit, then uses his savvy instead of Bo staff to solve a problem. It seems a bit rushed but it does show off Gambit’s ‘hero side’, especially since his thief side is about to be tested, apparently by the Thieves Guild itself.

Now, this isn’t the first time Gambit has been on trial, and he’s been accused of a lot of a bad stuff, done some of it too, so having another trial is a bit of a risky move for Asmus to make this late in the game for Gambit. Already Gambit has done enough stuff to get him back at the top of a bunch of watch lists, and make Rogue worry about him more than normal, so this could be either good/healthy for Gambit, or wreck everything he’s worked towards in the past few years.

That’s the thing though, he’s been working towards being the hero, the good guy, the teacher, and it’s done nothing but leave him feeling a bit empty. Is it because he’d rather be the bad guy? Because it hurts to much to be around Rogue? Or because he just hasn’t really let the past go?

Asmus has said that Remy’s ‘status quo’ will change by the end of his solo, what exactly does that mean?

This could go really good, or really not…

Wolverine and the X-Men #31I can’t really get enough of Mystique lately, she’s been in several titles and has been some of the best parts in those titles. Here she’s really trying to show just how tough she is, how cold and evil, but you can see it in her words that she wants to believe her rhetoric, but the truth is, she doesn’t. Oh, she’s evil, of course she is, but perhaps not as cold blooded as she lets on. It’s subtle work, maybe even something I’m reading into the dialogue, but it’s there nevertheless.

And of course there is Quire, he hasn’t decided if he’s a good guy or a bad guy. Most likely, he doesn’t care which he falls under. He’s there to help a friend, that’s it. Whether he’ll end up a super hero or a super villain has yet to be determined, but the fact that he cares about someone other than himself is very telling.

As for Paige and Toad… first, what is going on with Paige? She was already a bit out there when she left, but now she’s completely off her rocker. Something happened to her, but what? After all the wonderful characterizations everyone else is getting… surely Aaron didn’t drop the ball with Paige? There is also the way she’s treating Toad… poor Toad… reduced to janitor again like that’s all he’s good at. Toad better get his due by the end of this arc… that’s all I’m asking…

Oh, and there is the Siege Perilous… yeah, that can’t end well.

Astonishing X-Men #64Did… did Bobby do what I think he did?

Seriously, did that just happen? Fully and completely… no ‘he recovered’? Because if so… then Bobby Drake just murdered his own father.

Granted, Bobby is possessed by the Death Seed, but then that’s the thing, isn’t it. Scott had the Phoenix in him when he killed his ‘father figure’ Xavier. Both powers, the Death Seed and Phoenix, seemed to have corrupted the core of the person, warping what was there into something dark.

So… will Bobby get forgiveness once this is all over, much like Wanda after her mental breakdown? Or will he be ostracized like Scott? Only time will tell… and with Astonishing X-Men ending… it could all be swept under the rug for the main storyline.

As for Mystique, have I ever mentioned how awesome she is?

Review: X-Men #2

X-Men #2Wood wastes no time getting into the action. Arkea has taken over Karima’s body and starts to wreck havoc.

The leads all the title characters to show themselves to be fairly capable and calm in the face of an attack. However, the issue`omes to a standstill as Arkea jets out leaving behind a little present.

Story wise, we don’t get a lot of movement, just clarification of everything set up in the first issue. This isn’t really a bad thing. We’re not covered in exposition nor are we drowned in layers. It’s straight forward action and adventure.

There is a little touch on Jubilee’s mentality, what with her history with the X-Men and her adoption of the child. Nothing overbearing though, Wood isn’t trying to smash through the tropes, which is always a plus.

Now let’s hope Arkea’s present doesn’t cause too much damage.

Astonishing X-Men #68 cover artAnd yet another of my favorite titles gets axed. Here is the October solicitation for Astonishing X-Men #68 courtesy of Newsarama:

ASTONISHING X-MEN #68
MARJORIE LIU (W)
GABRIEL HERNANDEZ WALTA (A)
Cover by PHIL NOTO
FINAL ISSUE!
• Through thick and thin, from marriage to apocalypse, the X-Men have always stood together as a family.
• Is there anything in this world – or any other – that could break them up?
• It all ends here as Marjorie Liu bids a fond farewell to the Astonishing team!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

The thing is, Astonishing hasn’t been doing that bad in sales. Sure, it’s been skirting above the 20k milestone (23k in June) but it’s still up there unlike other titles which are floundering, like Morbius with only 14k. So why cancel Astonishing if it’s steady? I’m sure there is probably a reason, and that might do with how it’s 3.99 vs 2.99, perhaps they could give it a price cut? Or maybe they simply felt it ran its course?

It often feels like Astonishing doesn’t ‘fit’ with the whole Marvel NOW! thing, staying out of the AvX stuff and whatnot, but that’s been good for Astonishing. It’s allowed it to be its own title.

The worst part about this is while most of the main characters in Astonishing have homes in other titles, since Gambit’s solo was cancelled, this leaves the Cajun without a home unless one of the other titles picks him up. I haven’t heard any news of such a move, though it might be something that will crop up in the November solicits. Crossing my fingers he does get picked up, just not by Remender in Uncanny Avengers… though since apparently someone will die in #13 according to the October solicitations… there will be an opening.

Review: Gambit #14

Gambit #14A funny thing happened on the way back to school, Gambit got pulled into the Fairy dimension where the ladies just loved him. I feel my world is complete.

Other stuff happened in this filler issue, such as Remy and Pete Wisdom bro-mancing it up. Seriously, these two are awesome. I want to see a mini-series that is nothing but Remy, Storm, and Pete all together doing some kind of Ocean’s Eleven style mission/heist. Throw in Courier and X-23 and it will be a thing of beauty.

Also liked the beatnik!Remy look, did he steal Cyclops’ sunglasses? I want to say yes. It’s funnier if it’s a yes.

But getting to the bones of the matter, Remy really is having an identity crisis. He’s supposed to be a responsible role model now, but for a man of his background, that’s as alien to him as a human breathing water. And it’s not specifically said, but Rogue, the love of his life, being there probably doesn’t help much either.

With only  a few issues to go… any outcome is fair game for our Cajun hero. Has he truly matured? Or will he revert to what he knows best? Whatever happens, we’ll still love him anyway. Most likely.

Uncanny Avengers #9So, that happened. Remender ended the previous issue with a bang, literally, then just skips ahead to ‘oh, yeah, we’re good’ and spends the whole issue arguing. Literally, it is nothing but people talking and arguing over the different issues that they face, and not in a decent way either.

The whole M-Word thing, while Bendis wrote is as a civilized discussion, Remender just has Wanda and Rogue bitching each other out. Is this Remender lashing out at his critics?

Everyone is ‘so surprised’ that Logan killed someone. Huh? What part of his catch phrase did they not understand?

It’s all just crappy filler until the big reveal which was spoiled ages ago: The Four Horsemen of the Death. So, yeah, no surprises or, anything, really.

It’s like Remender doesn’t understand how comic books work…

All-New X-Men #13Mystique, never change, you are so freaking awesome. I have no idea what your real end-game is but apparently you want to buy a freaking island, Madripoor no less… that’s… that’s… yeah, just don’t change, ever.

In other news that isn’t that surprising, Bendis touches on the M-Word controversy and does a better job with it than Remender did. I do like how Kitty explains the concept of “Mutant and Proud” though not in so many words. This is the kind of discussion that really needs to be done with the idea of the “M-Word” floating out there but Remender isn’t really thinking it through and seems to have just tossed the comments in for the shock factor leaving the rest of the writers to do what he should be doing (and they are doing a great job of it).

It also makes me wonder if when Kitty says that Alex doesn’t speak for her… that maybe it’s Bendis saying Remender doesn’t speak for him.

As for the rest of the story, Lady Mastermind is going to do some damage with her illusion on Jean. Lady M teaming with Mystique really was a great idea… between the two of them, I’m not sure the core X-Men team really have a chance… (though, yeah, the X-Men will win, of course, le sigh).

Uncanny X-Men #7Have I mentioned Illyana kinda scares the crap out of me?

This issue didn’t do much to levy that fear, though it did pretty much stake her claim in BAMF territory. Not only does she time travel back in time to talk to Dr Strange pre-Avengers, but she basically absorbed Limbo. Something tells me that’s not gonna end well. If anything that’s got to induce some serious heartburn…

The new recruits though had a trial by fire and are going to come out of it worse for wear. They could end up losing some of the team, dunno, but it’s nice to see one of the Stepford Cuckoos actually acting like real human teenage girl for once. And good to see Scott not trying to cover up his power malfunction as well. He admits that they all need new training.

I think the really scary part is that this all might actually work out for them since they are being open and honest with most everything, even if they really don’t want to let anyone leave.

However, one can never be too sure in an X-Men comic where things will actually go from here…
