xmenlegacy10As much as I’m enjoying where this title has been going recently… I can’t help but be a little annoyed at how the writer just loves to refer to Ruth as a weirdo. Just because she wears the blindfold and has telekinetic and precognative abilities, as well as a speech impediment, doesn’t make her weird, at least by X-Men/Mutant standards. You would think that her fellow X-Men would be more forgiving of her differences? I suppose this is just an extension of Spurrier’s mad dash in the first issues to totally ditch on the X-Men in order to build up David, and I can kinda see the Cuckoo’s being all Mean Girl but Pixie? I dunno, it just bugs me.

But getting to the issue at hand, David believes he is going to end the world one day… and apparently has no idea how precognition actually works. For one, he took the power from one of his ‘demons’ which obviously has his own agenda. And there are things like self-fulfilling prophecies. And as for the ‘destiny’ that he thinks he sees… yeah… again… never trust the future, especially when destiny is involved because one thing is often not like the other. (and like his deal with the Xavier demon isn’t going to come back and bite him in the arse)

But that is no slight against Spurrier, he’s really taken David on a rollercoaster of emotions and he’s truly a mess. So it makes sense as to why he would want to get rid of his ‘mutant side’ as it were.

Also, nice to see a look at one of the glaring issues regarding super hero comics, there is always the collateral damage, the people who get stuck in the middle of stuff they have no way of fighting against and get hurt because of it. It’s a very real reason for people to be afraid of what mutants and superheros mean to them.

So, yeah, this should get interesting…

Deadpool Killustrated #4As I said before, Deadpool Killustrated was a great idea but it’s been poorly executed. They only give him four issues to kill off the classics and most of the really cool deaths or concepts are just washed over.

Who were the witches of MacBeth? Who was Dorian Gray?

This kind of stuff could have been awesome to explore, even in Deadpool’s hilarious way of doing things. But instead it’s all just washed over for one big battle with the Three Musketeers and Sherlock’s gang, the latter of which was kinda an underwhelming boss battle. They build up Sherlock and he doesn’t really do anything.

Then you get the cop out that Deadpool didn’t actually kill everything, just enough of it to make it ‘mortally wounded’ and it’s left to Sherlock to remember and try to heal it. Really? Not only do they skim on the fun stuff but they cop out on the ending too. I suppose they were trying to be metaphorical or something but come on, it’s Deadpool. If you say he’s going to kill everything, let him kill everything… he’s the only one who could get away with it!

Now we’re going to get a Deadpool vs Deadpool which may be interesting… but not if handled the same way as this mini-series. The sad part is I’ll probably buy it anyway.

Astonishing X-Men #61X-Termination: Part Five

Mostly a lot of talking in this issue, just getting us from Point A to Point B… telling us that there is only one way to stop the invaders and that is by sacrificing the Age of Apocalypse world.

Really? After all that time and effort put into the Age of Apocalypse title, which did have some measure of fan base, and all you’re going to do is destroy it completely?

What a crock.

If I had been a fan of the title then I would have totally yelled foul. In fact, I’m not a fan and I’m going to yell foul anyway.

Can’t really blame Liu for that though because she is writing inside of a pre-defined story structure… of which whoever came up with it is an idiot.

https://twitter.com/JamesAsmus/status/335080887484051456

This unfortunately comes as no surprise as Gambit had dropped below the 20k mark in sales according to April’s figures. I had predicted a little while go that at the rate Gambit was dropping he might be cancelled before he was legal to drive… with the series stopping at #17 I was pretty much on the mark, unfortunately.

Asmus really tried to get into the mind of Gambit in the beginning, showing he does know Gambit quite well, and really knows his ROMY, but it all came a little to late into the series for the casual reader. Not to mention Gambit has competition in the solo realm with the popular Hawkeye who is milking off the success of the movies (and I say that having several friends who only read Hawkeye now because they saw him in the Avengers movie). Still, it was a good run and let us pray other writers build on both Gambit’s expansion as a character and the building blocks Asmus put in place for a return to canon ROMY.

Unless I miss my guess, Gambit is only in Liu’s great run of Astonishing X-Men. He’s mentioned as a teacher at the school but is not actually utilized in Wolverine and the X-Men or any of the other titles which take place at least partially there. Hopefully he’ll be snatched up and given more face time, he’s just too good of a character to let wither away. Let’s hope the man gets his due.

Now, the only good thing about this cancellation… is maybe they can replace Remender with Asmus on Uncanny Avengers? A girl can dream, right?

Review: Gambit #12

Gambit #12Defenestratin’ Hussy. I think that is my new phrase…

This issue of Gambit ends the long plot-arc of Joelle and just what her game is, so SPOILERS.

Now, I never much cared for her just in general, but now that she’s gone I can’t help but be a little pissed about it. I mean, I understand why she used the Zero Compound to off herself but it feels like so much of a cop-out and pointless.

Yes, she was sad and depressed that her daughter died and she couldn’t… but… did she not have grandchildren? No other legacies? And there was Gambit right there, okay, yeah, he kinda went into ROMY mode when Rogue came around (which actually makes this all the worse). Surely Gambit and/or Rogue weren’t so blind to see what she was about to do. I know that once she touched the liquid she was a goner but Gambit was right freaking there, he could have knocked the cannister out of her hand.

Maybe I’m a little oversensitive to the subject due to personal history but I really think that this wasn’t the best way to end things. I think it would have been stronger, both in story and in character, for Gambit (and maybe Rogue) try to help her more. Joelle could have been legitimately pulled out of Gambit’s life as she sought treatment for her depression and learned how to live… I’m sure Wolvie would be willing to sit her down and put her straight.

However, I can’t say that it was a bad ending, it wrapped itself up and was a legitimate conclusion (even if I think it was the wrong one), and the reactions of Gambit and Rogue afterwards were well done. You can see Gambit is hurting, even if he didn’t love Joelle he still failed to save her, plus he’s a bit lost himself right now. Rogue wants to do something but knows it’s all stuff Gambit has to handle on her own, lest he fall into the same comfort trap she was worried about falling into herself.

It’s all so freaking sad.

Curse you Asmus for all the FEELS.

Keep up the good work.

Review: A+X #7

A+X #7This series is already starting to cycle through characters which is kinda lame since it’s only issue seven and there are literally hundreds of characters they can pull from.

Regardless, these were pretty fun stories.

Tony gets his butt beat by Hulk but not in the traditional sense. Basically both Tony and Beast get outsmarted by Bruce which is hilarious in its own special way.

As for Thor and Iceman, can you say ‘odd couple’? Bobby is always not taking things seriously and Thor is perpetually missing the joke. Nice to see Iceman kick a lot of butt though, it would be easy to just let the super-powered Thor take the win so it’s great to see Iceman getting to show why ice can be one tough element.

Review: Morbius #4

Morbius: The Living Vampire #4Can we say set-up? Cause, yeah, that’s pretty much all this issue did, set Morbius up for a role he really doesn’t want to play… and really probably shouldn’t.

And that’s kinda unfortunate in that it’s really obvious… though hopefully Keatinge will do something different with it. The fact that Noah was a plant and not just some guy… and that Morbius was lead into going to Brownsville… does make me want to scratch my head a little. This is a good thing and is it means more is going on here than the obvious.

The Rose… yeah… I don’t know a heck of a lot about that character, well, characters, as different people have taken up that mantle over the years. My guess, this is a new Rose, a fifth Rose, which would leave a lot of doors open to have some interesting fun with the character as the villain. What’s his motivation to become The Rose? Could we see the birth of a villain while we see an anti-hero in his earliest creation?

I really hope so.

Wolverine and the X-Men #28I forget, were we supposed to care about Dog Logan?

This issue sees the wrap of that storyline… whatever it was… and there was a few interesting things that did come out of it. For one, Eye Boy actually kicked ass for five minutes… it was pretty epic. Quire showed that he isn’t as bad as he pretends to be and continues to be my guilty crush. As for Herman, well, let’s hope he gets whats coming to him.

So, yeah, as much as there was a great scene with the kids right there at the end, this whole arc has been kinda boring and pointless regarding Dog. We also got a bunch of existential crap from Logan that seemed a little meh.

The next issue seems to promise a look at the future of the school… we already got a glimpse of it before but that was a possible future… maybe… we’ll just have to see.

X-Treme X-Men #13X-Termination – Part Four. Seriously, why all the lack of love for Kurt? Poor boy just can’t catch a break…

Now, this is the final issue of X-Treme X-Men… though it’s not really over because the story continues into Astonishing X-Men and the final X-Termination issue… so… yeah… annoying. If you weren’t reading the other stuff then this is totally a crappy cliff-hanger-ish of an ending. Even if you are, there is no guarantee that those final two books, which aren’t written by Pak are going to really give an ending to these characters as they deserve… especially since it will have to deal with an ensemble cast.

What a crap way to leave us off… but at least the storyline will be ended… but it’s still crap.

Would I still recommend picking up the collection if you haven’t been reading it? Yeah, the books in the middle are very high quality and I love how they are done… I will definitely be on the look out for more of Pak’s work in the future.

And still a better ending than LOST…

Age of Apocalypse #14X-Termination – Part Three. The teams have split up to go and take care of the energy beings which want to destroy the universe. Did I miss a motive other than wanton destruction? Maybe… I slept since then.

Short of it is that a lot of people die. A bunch of random people that if I actually read AoA I would probably know a lot more about died. Hercules died. Sabretooth and his kid were already dead. And more seem to be joining the body count. Ugh.

At least we know the big ones from 616 won’t die but that’s hardly a consolation. I don’t feel like this crossover is really doing anything other than just getting a bunch of people to fight what seems to be an unwinnable battle.

And with evil-Beast causing problems by taking off with the Apocalypse Seed… I don’t think either universe is going to catch a break any time soon.
