Review: X-Men Legacy #2

Issue 2 of the new X-Men Legacy run is still establishing Legion’s character, showing how he is reacting to the death of his father and the fact his mind is a mess of egos.

It’s really kinda blah.

This other mutant is different in that he’s a very racist mutant, interesting to see the story go there, and he manipulated Legion rather easily. But then he’s gone putting whatever plans he had into motion. It’s a plot point we’ll hopefully see more of otherwise it’s a disappointment.

I’m kinda annoyed at all the cursing that’s done in this book. Now, I’m not one to shy away from cursing, I get very creative while driving in traffic, but pointless cursing bugs me. Cursing for the sake of cursing, which is exactly what’s going on here only replaced with funny symbols since they can’t actually write those words on paper, shows a lack of finesse in both story telling and dialogue. It’s a false crutch to create some kind of emotional drama.

Blah.

Let’s hope once they get out of the character creation stage and into the meat of the story they won’t waste so much speech bubble on it.

Review: X-Treme X-Men #7

The X-Treme series just gets better, we have a nice round off of the plot started in the previous issue with Kurt being trapped on a robot infested world. The moralistic grey area is nicely highlighted again without being shoved to far up the reader’s nose.

Danger, who in this reality runs the world of robots, is made decidedly evil with only a few bits of ‘screen time’. This is a good thing and very well done.

Poor Kurt though, don’t think that’s something one easily recovers from but he did just grow up a lot in this issue.

The next issue will see them meeting back up with Xavier’s head in a bottle and alternate versions of Dazzler and Wolverine, that should be interesting. I also wonder if Sage will be joining them seeing as she kind broke protocols and got herself into some hot water. Since they lost the Alt-Emma, this might be a good addition to the team.

Review: Deadpool #2

I actually read this last week and never got around to posting a review. As I sit here attempting to that I now realize… there was nothing remarkable about this issue.

Other than some funny comments made by the Dead Presidents and one ghost (hallucination?) of Ben Franklin… just more of the same ol’ wack-a-doodle that was in the first issue. I’m beginning to see my friend’s point about how Deadpool is not really taken seriously anymore and now a one-dimensional joke of a character.

Also, what is up with drawing him as manky as possible? I mean, yeah, we all know his health-factor causes cancerous sores all over his body but there is a reason he wears that outfit!

If the ever do get that Deadpool movie off the ground… I hope they source info from Kelly’s run and not what is going on right now.

Review: Uncanny Avengers #2

The storyline of Captain America creating a new team with Havok in the lead is dragging on a bit. Yes, we understand why he’s doing this, why he picked Havok, but do you really need to drag that out so much? I suppose they do since they need these guys doing something while Red Skull and his dastardly plan is put into motion, but still…

As for Rogue and Wanda, first off, a big YES to the idea of Rogue and Gambit involved in ‘kinky bondage drinking games’ and a big NO to the idea of Rogue pleasuring Magneto, eww.

I suppose we should all be worried that Wanda considered Red Skull’s offer to destroy mutants again (after she went through the trouble of bringing them back after she went a little nuts the first time)… but she was being given a ‘whammy’ by Red Skull and his newly merged-with-Xavier’s brain. Also, what does Wanda have to live for? She lost her children (if she even technically had them) and her husband has decided he wants nothing to do with her and lots of people blame her for everything…

You know… she would make an awesome and very realistic villain…

Now we’ re cooking with gas.

First, Gambit sneaks a Knighthood while also charming the Queen. Would we expect anything less from him?

Pete Wisdom, well, I have a feeling if the two weren’t on the opposite sides of the law at the moment, him and Remy would probably be pretty good friends.

This issue though is more ‘smash and grab’ and less character development like the first few. We do get the idea though that Gambit is enjoying this perhaps more than he should seeing as he’d doing it under duress.

Now Remy is considered an Enemy of the Crown… I wonder how long it will take for that to reach back to Rogue and the X-Men. Granted, they won’t likely be in the story at all but I can see a lot of them not thinking too much about it. It’s Gambit after all…

Review: Wolverine and the X-Men #21

From the cover of this issue I did have to wonder if some funny business was going on… was the school doing a fundraiser of some sort? Nope, the X-Men are simply under mind-control.

Awesome.

I do love how they made Storm an escape artist (she doesn’t do enough thieving if you ask me) and Logan as a clown that gets the crap beat out of him? Yeah, I’m with Kid Omega, this is freaking epic.

However, the Frankenstein sub-plot is kinda weak and definitely just a mechanism to get these characters were they are. There isn’t a lot of substance, so overall it falls kinda flat.

But like a typical Disney channel tv series (Disney, see what I did there?), it will be up to the kids to save the day.

Oh, and is just me, or is Storm wearing more clothes now that she’s in the circus? Isn’t that usually the other way around?

Review: Deadpool #1

Deadpool has moved on from Daniel Way to a new series by Gerry Duggan and Brian Posehn. A lot of people (that I know) gave Way a lot of flack for what they call ‘turning Deadpool into a one-dimensional character’ but dunno if I really agree with that. Regardless, this is not about Way but about the new series!

It’s… wacked… wack-a-doodle.

Not only is the villain a completely insane idea (Necromancer bringing new meaning to the term ‘Dead Presidents’) but they really went out of their way to draw DP as manky as possible. So gross!

There were some grown worthy lines… as well as some very awesome scenes… so while this wasn’t a great Deadpool comic (the greatest being DP going back in time and pretending to be Spider-Man under Kelly’s run), it wasn’t a bad one either. Not sure what it’s setting up for but I’m not willing to cancel my subscription just yet.

Review: All-New X-Men #1

On the face of it the idea of doing a time travel where the original team is brought forward sounds a bit groan-worthy. After all, not only has time travel gotten cliché and over-used in general, but in specific it’s pretty bad with the X-Men. In fact, it’s the X-Men version of the Star Trekian ‘quantum flux’.

What makes all the difference is the framework in which the story is set.

I was pleasantly surprised with All-New X-Men. Hank’s condition has led him towards thinking even farther outside the box, giving him a real reason to do this rather just him getting the idea. This adds a level of credibility to the story than if McCoy simply decided ‘hey, time travel, why not?’.

I like how they not really subtly but not bluntly either basically saying ‘yeah, Scott’s lost his damn mind and his characterization has been shot all to hell’. This is framed nicely by the fact that yes, Scott has indeed lost his mind. Really, I just want to see the look on his face when he sees Jean again, that should be epic!

So yeah, I can do this.

Review: X-Treme X-Men #6

This comic just keeps getting better and better.

Seriously, not only are the quips a lot more refined in this issue, along with some hilarious visuals (seriously, Wolverine attacking a Dinosaur, who doesn’t want to see more of that?), but they have been able to touch that very delicate line between being socially conscious versus totally on the nose.

They under play the Governor’s apparent homosexuality quite nicely, not making a huge deal of it while at the same time addressing ‘this reality’s’ take on the subject.

They also segway into the idea that robots ‘are people too’ nice and leanly, instead of attempting to bludgeon us with the concept (BSG, I’m looking at you!).

Lastly, they touch on the fact that even in so-called perfect societies where everyone is given equal rights, equality still doesn’t exist. If that’s not a comment on socialism, I don’t know what is.

I really can’t wait to see where this one goes.
