X-Men Legacy #11David Haller is just a bit of a prick, isn’t he, but it works to his advantage.

I mean, who else would just stand up to Red Skull after all the stuff he’s done, both in general and personal against David, and just ‘whatevers’. So you’re Red Skull and you stole my dad’s brain, whoop-tee-do. You kinda have to admire that, even if it’s just a bit insane.

Then there is Ruth, running around trying to find someone to help David and the only person who might actually like him other than her she can’t even communicate with (and here I thought everyone could just understand Doop automatically). But she made herself a little team of some decently powerful superheroes… let’s see if they have what it takes to stand up to both Legion and Red Skull.

As for Red Skull… what is his plans with David? Whatever it is, can’t be good.

P.S. can we get a better artist on this title? Davidson and Huat make everyone look so… emaciated and semi-demonic…

X-Men Legacy #3

X-Men Legacy #3

Review: X-Men Legacy #3

This issue of Legacy is a bit strange. You have two story lines going at once: one is your typical (cliché even) events happening to other people are mimics of what I’m dealing with and the second is something akin to a Three Stooges skit.

For the most part, this kinda works. It’s different, a little twisted, not too confusing, and generally is amusing. The skit does take away from the cliché part which is a good thing cause it is cliché.

But then everything in the skit is wrapped up and you’re left with a rather blank back-end which is completely devoid of any originality either in story or dialogue.

To give it the benefit of the doubt though, Legion hasn’t really done much recently that I know of so the character is being reintroduced and does need a certain level of ‘breaking in’ that other characters wouldn’t. Like X-Treme X-Men which didn’t really start getting good till the fourth issue, and also had an underused character that kinda came out of the blue, I’m giving this one a chance to also pull itself together.

X-Men Legacy #2

X-Men Legacy #2

Review: X-Men Legacy #2

Issue 2 of the new X-Men Legacy run is still establishing Legion’s character, showing how he is reacting to the death of his father and the fact his mind is a mess of egos.

It’s really kinda blah.

This other mutant is different in that he’s a very racist mutant, interesting to see the story go there, and he manipulated Legion rather easily. But then he’s gone putting whatever plans he had into motion. It’s a plot point we’ll hopefully see more of otherwise it’s a disappointment.

I’m kinda annoyed at all the cursing that’s done in this book. Now, I’m not one to shy away from cursing, I get very creative while driving in traffic, but pointless cursing bugs me. Cursing for the sake of cursing, which is exactly what’s going on here only replaced with funny symbols since they can’t actually write those words on paper, shows a lack of finesse in both story telling and dialogue. It’s a false crutch to create some kind of emotional drama.

Blah.

Let’s hope once they get out of the character creation stage and into the meat of the story they won’t waste so much speech bubble on it.

X-Men Legacy #1

X-Men Legacy #1

Review: X-Men Legacy #1

X-Men Legacy as a team book with Rogue in charge was cancelled for better things and reissued as a story centering around Legion, quiet possibly the most powerful mutant to ever exist (and Xavier’s son). I thought this might be a good read because Legion is a very interesting study in Dissociative Identity Disorder which plays a rather big role in XMFFS.

The first issue of X-Men Legacy is pretty basic, doesn’t do much but set up Legion’s character, reminding everyone of his particular issues, etc. In that sense it does a great job.

However, nothing really happens. And worse, a hole bunch of people die for no real reason.

That being said, it is just the first issue and it did what it needed to do and didn’t try to be anything else so… that’s something. Definitely see what the next few issues look like on this and who else is going to be spotlighted and how.
