Review: Deadpool #17

Deadpool #17Deadpool put a Hello Kitty band-aid on Wolverine’s wound… that’s just the best thing ever.

I mean, really, it was. Deadpool didn’t have to do it. He didn’t even ask if could do it. He doesn’t even point out that he does it. He pats Wolverine on the shoulder and leaves a band-aid behind because the mutant can no longer heal himself. It’s these little things that show the nuance of his character beyond the ‘one note joke’ people often accuse him of being.

He may joke a lot, be rude and crude, but he’s not a bad person. Somewhere underneath there is a decent man, one who is just very horribly scarred, and I’m not talking about his cancerous skin.

As for the main story, it ranges between hilarious and really sad. And good on Captain America to not back off simply because of the possibility of making an international fubar, what with them being in North Korea and everything. He’s doing what’s right for these unfortunate people who have been experimented on. I know Cap and Wolvie ‘say’ they aren’t Deadpool’s friend, but their actions speak louder than words… it’s just sad that this is the way they have to play this game.

Next issue we’ll come face to face with Butler and possibly even more mutated experiments… and perhaps learn the truth about Eleanor.

Review: X-Men #6

X-Men #6Seven chapters into the Battle of the Atom and suddenly everything starts to happen.

The supposed good future X-Men turn bad pretty quickly, mostly cause future!Xavier (or whoever) lost his temper for no reason.  I can understand him going nuts after he learned that young!Bobby and young!Hank went into the future… but he lost his marbles before that even happened. It all felt really pushed in a ‘quick, they need to be the bad guys now’ kind of way.

Jubilee so far has been a pretty fun mom, and I think it’s awesome the students made Shogo a ‘hamster ball’. That’s just the cutest thing ever. And future!Shogo showing up and calling her mom, one of the first moments in this time travel thing that’s made me not cringe.

But what did was the shape shifting ‘son’ of Mystique and Logan? I mean? Wha? Huh? I call B.S.  And have I mentioned I hate these types of time travel arcs? And is Wolverine’s healing factor messed up? Did I miss something there? That’s what I get for not reading the bazillon Wolverine titles…

But Deadpool was awesome… then… when is he not?

Astonishing X-Men #68And Astonishing X-Men leave us, not with a bang, not with a futile attempt at over-existentializing, but with grace and dignity.

I mean, a lot of comics and tv shows, when they end, try to do things up with big, massive, world-ending stuff that’s wrapped up in a few panels. Others try to get a bit too deep, like the characters inside are actually ‘dying’. Then some just leave us on some WTF cliff-hanger.

Astonishing takes the inspired way out and simply doesn’t end. Not in the ‘wait, what the heck happens next’ kind of way Gambit ended, but in the ‘these characters are going about their lives, I’ve simply stopped being the one telling the story’.

It is kinda annoying we don’t know the legal state of Jean-Paul and Kyle, but in the way that’s kinda better because otherwise the whole issue could have devolved into legal mumbo and socio-political boxing. Which wouldn’t have been bad if it wasn’t the final issue. I’m sure this isn’t the last we’ve heard of this situation, though I’m not sure of the how/where for now.

So, yeah, the biggest lesson from this finale is that life goes on. It may seem difficult and lost at times… but it always finds its place.

Damn, I’m gonna miss this title.

All-New X-Men #17Time Travel! You get to time travel! And you get to time travel! Everyone gets to time travel!

Have I mentioned how much I hate time travel arcs? Jubilee is going by Wolverine now, which is kinda nice, except it will never actually happen because they will never let Logan die. And how does Quire play host to the Phoenix Force if it’s been destroyed? Why can’t it stay dead too? Don’t get me started on the possible parentage of Kymera. UGH!

It is interesting to see that glimpse of the future and just how the one group of X-Men went off their rocker. Dazzler as President? Yeah, I can see it.

But all things considered, this “Event” has been running at a pretty slow pace. If they are giving us this pay off in part 6 of 10… I have a feeling there really isn’t much left for them to do and it will either end anti-climatically or very rushed. And except for whoever leaves/stays, none of this is going to matter in the long run.

What I really wanna know though… where is Rogue and/or Gambit in this future? Yes, I have a one track mind. If they aren’t going to get a direct mention then I’ll just assume they got married and shacked up in an Italian villa… totally plausible.

Arrow - Season 2I think the writer’s notes got mixed in with the script…

There is a lot of dialogue in this episode that is literally just the characters talking about their characterization and about how they should probably change it. Oliver shouldn’t really kill people. Oliver and Laurel really should feel guilty for what they did. Etc. Everyone was getting character shifts, flipping on how they were last season due to the events in the Glades. Some of it’s reasonable, but others it’s like the writers figured this would be better for the character, so let’s change it.

While yes, it’s a good thing that Oliver isn’t just dropping bodies everywhere, and seeing Tommy’s stupid death (cause it was literally stupid, he just stands there waiting for the roof to fall) can change a person… the way it’s presented is so monotone and simplistic that I can’t help but wonder if these writers even understand the meaning of nuance?

Oh, and everyone is still whiny.

Seriously, everyone whined, except Walter, but he had like five lines.

The logistics weren’t nearly as bad… no, strike that, they were. Olivier’s Tarzan swing in the beginning was way to slow or that landmine was way too old. And if they had to parachute onto the island… then how did they get off it? You know… I’m just gonna stop there.

The good news is that the show hasn’t gotten any worse, they didn’t try to drastically change up anything (which might have actually been a good thing, but also very bad). So fans of the show are going to get more of the same. Which is good for them… and…. yeah… this is going to be a long season…

p.s. City of Heroes was an awesome game…

Agents_of_SHIELD_logoOh, now they’re just trolling us.

Coulson: You forget – I saw plenty of action with the Avengers. [walks away]
May: And you died.

Followed up later by…

Coulson: Should just be muscle memory.

Totally trolling us with what really happened on the Helicarrier. It screams Life Model Decoy, but would that be too obvious? But what other option is there? In theory, it shouldn’t be long before we find out.

As for the rest of the episode, this show has started to gain a dual personality much like fellow ABC series Once Upon A Time. The stuff with Ward and Skye is pretty lame, obvious, harsh on the dialogue. The stuff with Coulson…  OMG, freaking brilliant!

Every moment in the Ward/Skye/Training story line you could see the next piece in line. It was laid out like a high school drama play and predictable at every step. There was the occasional cute comment, but for the most part, it was where the episode dragged the most. The writers continue to flux with Skye’s seemingly questionable loyalties but it’s nothing new, nothing fresh, and it was predictable. No way she was going to turn on the team this quickly and not for that reason. Still no chemistry between Ward and Skye as well.

But then we get to Coulson’s plot arc. Only Coulson would just wear a suit to an infiltration like that. I mean, he doesn’t put on a flack vest, he doesn’t even strip to a t-shirt. Nope, just wearing the suit cause he’s classy like that. Then when he confronts the scientist, Dr. Hall, the whole scene with the rotating gravity was spectacularly well done for a tv-budget.  And his decision at the end, to sacrifice the man who was sacrificing himself. It was cold, it was calculating, and was probably the right thing to do. I literally sat up and said a few choice unrepeatable words.  This is the kind of thing we want to see more of in this show. The soft underbelly, the moralist existentialism. Basically, the stuff we’ve come to know from Whedon. I hope this is just the beginning.

Speaking of beginnings… yeah, way to go creating a super-villain there Coulson… couldn’t be more proud.

Review: A+X #12

A+X #12Not really knowing the history behind these two character’s relationship, I don’t know if I should be smiling or really sad.

I’m guessing, from how it’s portrayed in the comic here, that Beast and Wonder Man had a pretty close friendship until Wonder Man did something that pretty much ended it. It’s an awkward reunion but after some greasy food and a few beers, they spend the evening just doing stuff like taking on the Circus of Crime and randomly shaving Wolverine’s head (classic!) and the night ends on Beast getting sexually assaulted by ‘Poundcakes’.

It’s all pretty hilarious and socially aware, but I have a feeling it was supposed to be poignant too. It does kinda make me wish I knew more about their relationship.

Our second unlikely team-up is Captain America and Jubilee. Apparently Nazi Vampires are a thing now.

The fact that Jubilee is a vampire now, and all that entails, doesn’t get touched on that much. Even in X-Men where she’s a major character and has adopted a kid, it’s something that’s only briefly touched on in her comments that her kid won’t exactly have a normal childhood, but then who does when it comes to the X-Men? As decently written as it was, it was still just your typical PSA on ‘not letting your situation control who you are as a person’ kind of thing.

Just cause you’re a vampire doesn’t mean you have to be a monster. Truer words to live by, no doubt…

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.I’m pretty sure that raft would have gotten sucked through the hole.

Convenient physics aside, this was your typical ‘now that the team is together, they have to learn how to work together’ episode. It was pretty straight forward plot and predictable with the double cross. The dialogue was at times very blunt, do we really need to be told they have a common enemy now? It was kinda obvious. Not to mention the show is really pushing the relationship between Ward and Sky and that’s given us some unfortunately dialogue, not to mention the two have no chemistry.

That being said, there was definitely an air of adventure to the series. They find an old Hydra weapon in an Incan temple, then fight people for control over it. It’s very old-school comics and that’s awesome to see here. Once the show gets into its groove it will be literally like watching a comic book in action. The dialogue and plotting needs work but it’s early days yet, and the show has several bright moments of snappy dialogue and genuine character feels.

My only worry is that the moment with Sky at the end was just a bit too obvious.  Everyone calls her a risk, blah blah, Coulson sticks up for her, blah blah, oh, guess what, she’s probably still working for Rising Tide. Unless there is a major twist somewhere, which is totally possible, this is going to have very little payoff. No surprises here.  But hey, two episodes in and it’s already a zillion times better than Arrow.

Lastly, FURY! Already we get a cameo from an MCU main character and it’s none other than Nick Fury himself telling Coulson off for the damage done to the plane. It was a great touch and very well done. I honestly thought Clark Gregg was going to crack up at one point, but then he delivers that obvious but fantastic “Cancel the fish tank” line. The whole scene is a beautiful touch that elevates the entire episode. Obviously they can’t have cameos like this in every episode, but the fact we get one early like this is a good sign for a lot of things to come.

Uncanny Avengers #12For once, Remender is scarily close to correctly characterizing a character… but it’s still full of fails.

Is it just me, or is Wanda sounding a lot like dear old dad here? The whole ‘take all the mutants to Jupiter to live in a mutant-only world’ reminds me of Asteroid M. She also seems to have been convinced that humans and mutants will never get along. This whole situation is very much a Magneto thing and Wanda has, in the past, done some insane things in the name of just making everyone stop fighting…

But here’s the thing. Wanda knows that not all humans are bad, she is friends with some very human Avengers, for good or bad. And the whole “House of M” thing wasn’t exactly her idea. She was in a vulnerable state and her brother gave her the idea. When everyone was coming to kill her, she latched onto the idea and gave it form, even turning herself ‘human’ in House of M to highlight just how much less-than-worth-loathing Wanda had stored up. House of M failed, No More Mutants wasn’t any better, but both times she was just trying to do something, anything, to stop the fighting, and the pain.

So yeah, in some respect you can see her latching onto the Jupiter thing in the same vein… but I think Wanda would have learned from everything that happened during House of M, plus being an Avenger in general, that a) you have to treat the cause of the human/mutant divide, not the symptoms, and b) never, ever, ever trust the bad guy, doesn’t matter what they are saying.

At the moment, Wanda seems to be walking back through the same old loop without any real character advancement. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and over again but expecting different results. That is Wanda right now. And she very much deserves way more than this.

Review: Deadpool #16

Deadpool #16You would really think these Weapon X types would have learned their lesson. I guess for all the tech/bio smarts they have, they lack common sense.

You don’t put the likes of Deadpool in a cage, he’s going to get out and kill everything that moves. But kudos to Butler for having the balls to face Deadpool dead on. Granted, he did have some aces up his sleeve, but this is Deadpool we’re talking about, he can be unstable at times.

It’s pretty messed up though, about all the super-heroes that were created and their sadistic training. Talk about human rights violations. I want to kick Butler in the face myself. Figures that the one who was injected with Nightcrawler’s DNA is the one with the biggest heart. I really hope he gets to live through this story arc. But then they have back up in the form of Wolverine and Captain America, so they have a definite chance of getting everyone out alive (not that the writer would actually let that happen).

This also means that not only did Wolverine come to help Wade (after telling him off) but so did Cap. They are his friends, and for someone like Wade who does what he does and lives like he lives, that probably means more than any of the characters will ever admit to.

As for Eleanor, is she really Wade’s daughter? As far as I know this is the first we’ve heard of her so anything could happen. Kinda messed up the way they are introducing her, but it has the effect needed. Poor Wade, “she’s too beautiful to be mine”. That boy has some major self-image issues, and he hides them all behind jokes.

Also, kudos for Preston, someone had to kick Deadpool out of his moping.
