Review: All-New X-Men #8

All-New X-Men #8I heart Angel. I also heart young Warren.

The conversation these two have is funny, heartwarming, and extremely sad at the same time. Warren sees that something has obviously happened to him, not that nobody wanting to talk to him about it wasn’t already a dead give away. He wants to know so badly what happened, why he has metal wings, etc, and all Angel can do is just make him more confused.

They then decide to help save Avenger’s Tower since the Avengers aren’t home  and Angel is all very innocent about it while Warren is ‘uh, shouldn’t we call for backup?’ Of all the ‘old team’ members sans Jean, Warren and Angel seem like the two farthest apart but closest together. Sure, the Scott’s seem like complete opposites but really one is just an extreme form of the other. The two Warrens really are two separate individuals now and it’ll be interesting to see how that plays out. Especially after Jean’s little whammy on Warren (which I’ll get to in a bit).

This issue then ends on two very important scenes. The first being young Scott walking up to Captain America and being… well… young Scott. It’s like “how can you be mad at that face?!?”. When you have the entire Avengers team stunned, even Black Widow visibly shocked and Hawkeye without a snarky comment, then you know you hit the mark. He might have even earned points with Wolverine (which I’m kinda now really wanting to see some more growth with those two as, maybe not friends, but definitely not the rivals they once were).

The second major moment was Jean putting the whammy on Warren. Of everyone in the old team she’s the one with the most to gain and most to lose as at least everyone else is still alive. It’s so ominous that you have to wonder if this is really where things are heading or is it a red-harring? But Jean going evil without the Phoenix is something that could very easily happen and would definitely have a strong impact on the mutant community, for better or worse…

Review: A+X #5

A+X #5Iron Fist and a Lima Bean…

Yeah, that’s all I got out of that one. I have absolutely no clue what was going on in the Iron Fist and Doop team up.

I mean, I know what happened, they were after a monster ball and they got it by means of some completely random moves… but for the most part I’m with Iron Fist: let’s not talk about his tights or what happened that night again… ever…

But in a very nice twist, instead of two ‘heroes’ working together in the second part of this A+X, two villains are instead having to reluctantly throw in together, they being Mr Sinister and Loki. Now, I love Sinister as a villain, he’s almost perfect actually. So it was nice to see him messing about and being able to put the smack down on Loki.

However, Loki is the God of Chaos and a trickster himself… he can definitely hold his own against Sinister. I kinda want to see a comic dedicated to these two now… working together (sorta, kinda because it’s these two we’re talking about). I’m hoping that this A+X story is actually setting up for something in the future and not just a complete one-off.

Review: Deadpool #7

Deadpool #7There are filler issues, then there are filler issues… and then there is whatever the hell this is!

The latest issue of Deadpool coins a new term for me: retro-meta. If you bother to read the front page, it tries to claim that this was a previously written but unpublished Deadpool issue which is finally seeing the light of day after thirty/forty years. It becomes pretty obvious that that’s a load of bull and this filler issue is one wild (possibly alcohol induced) trip down the rabbit hole.

The concept for the story is that it’s the late 70s or early 80s and Deadpool gets asked by a demon to make Tony Stark fall off the wagon. Yup, that’s pretty much it.

In reality, the story really reminds me of when Deadpool went back in time and pretended to be Spider-Man/Peter Parker. It has that feel, that ‘poking fun at the Marvel back-log’ vibe that makes you giggle, but ultimately, it doesn’t quite have the full kick that classic Deadpool story had.

Still, it’s a right laugh and one of the more interesting fillers I’ve ever read… taking the idea that if you’re gonna have a filler, you might as well have fun with it.

Review: Deadpool #6

Deadpool #6Finally we finish out the Dead Presidents arc and while Washington goes down with a little less effort than I would expect… the pop culture references in this particular issue are quite something. Almost every single page had one and they actually worked with the story rather than being forced in.

There was also reference again to Dr Strange and Wade’s ‘problem’ which I want to hear more of… and who was the girl who saw him in the afterlife? Death herself? Someone he knows? Jean Grey being silly? I like that the author shows that there is more to this than some gross jokes and hopefully we’ll really get down to business with Deadpool as a character in later issues.

As for what happened to Preston… I did predict that the Necromancer would do something… but have to admit, didn’t expect him to store Preston’s conscious in Wade. Wade, of course, got a little sentimental during the fight with Washington about losing Preston which was good to see. There wasn’t quite the perfect balance of ‘caring Deadpool’ and ‘whatevers Deadpool’ that we have come to know but it was played up quite nicely.

Overall this arc has been hit and miss of mostly just really gross Dead President and ye old Pop Culture clash jokes. While it’s been fun, again, I want to see the story get a bit more serious and delve into Deadpool more. Let’s see what the next issue brings…

Review: Arrow “The Huntress Returns”

CW's ArrowArrow: A Study In Hypocrisy.

Seriously, I kinda lost count as to the how and why Oliver kills people… I mean, four episodes ago Oliver killed all of Vanch’s underlings without batting an eye but like “No, you can’t kill Vanch cause that would be vengeance not justice!” Erm… huh? What about the underlings? I’m so confused…

As for Huntress, I admit not being up on the Green Arrow or Birds of Prey mythos… but I’ve been told she’s not a bad guy. Is this some kind of Xena stuff where she starts out bad and eventually is made good? Maybe she forsakes the horrible goth-wannabe wardrobe and starts kicking it old school? Perhaps that’s for season two…

Okay, so the River Song meeting Dresden moment wasn’t as epic as I had hopped… in fact… did Alex Kingston forget to act? Seriously, what was going on there?! What was she going for, the anti-River Song?

Oh, and Oliver loses another girlfriend… I’m totally rolling my eyes… his love life is really annoying. There are too many other relationship things going on right now with other people that something has to give and I think Olivier’s should be it. Yes, he’s the lead character, but we need to see him characterize through being Arrow… his relationships with his family and friends… not though his girlfriends. Ugh.

Speaking of relationships… Thea was getting it on with Red Arrow… so ‘Speedy’ was making out with ‘Speedy’… I understand them wanting to skip the Robin-esque background of the original Speedy but calling his sister Speedy instead and then having her hook with him… creepy… and what was up with that knife fight? He just decides to randomly do a really bad interpretation of Spider-Man? What can I say, it was awkward.

Now, when this show started, the flashbacks at least tried to tie into what was going on in present time. However, now the flashbacks is just like a mini-series running alongside Arrow as its own thing. That kinda makes it better now… as much as it’s annoying that they are wasting time they could be using to flesh out the characters, the flashbacks actually now have a purpose and a drive independent of the present story. This shows promise.

But I’m still confused…

Review: Uncanny X-Men #3

Uncanny X-Men #3Yes, a Kangaroo themed Australian Superhero is just plain lazy.

I’ll give the Avengers props in this one. They did “Assemble” but at least tried to talk to Scott and not shoot first (well, Hawkeye would have if someone had let him). Unfortunately, when you have two sides who both think the other is responsible… you’re going to have some major differences of opinions. I want to believe both of them are right… to a point… and the only people I really want to empathize with are the new mutants who are just kinda there. They came into being a mutant, and all the baggage that comes with that, at probably the worst time possible… so it’s easy to see how they would fall under Scott’s direction.

The analogues for racism and sexism are pretty blatant and typical but at least not over done.

Magneto is still a strange one. He admits to having been a ‘traitor’ but says it’s all part of his plan. Mags is a pretty cunning genius and it’s nice to see that he’s actually being cunning… and a genius… but is he trustworthy? Only time will tell.

As for Illyana… she’s nutz… but it’s a fun crazy. She keeps this up and maybe she can intern for Harley Quinn…

Review: Wolverine and the X-Men #26

Wolverine and the X-Men #26So, Wolverine is the teacher Jean Grey’s deserves… Dog Logan is the teacher Jean Grey’s needs?

To be honest, I stopped paying attention.

WatX is normally a rather fun comic, or at least intense in some way, however, this issue is pretty much just all of Dog Logan’s backstory to let the reader know who this guy is… and it’s dull. Not only is it way too much background dump, but it’s as cliché and tropey as they come. I guess we’re supposed to feel sorry for or at least empathize with Dog but there isn’t anything to grab hold of. It’s literally ‘the sob story you’ve heard a thousand times over’.

As for Dog’s motivations? I’m not real sure I care.

Well, all hell has broken loose thanks to Dog and we’ll see how that is dealt with in the next issue… which will hopefully be a lot more interesting. Personally, I can’t wait to see Dog and Quire meet… that should be… interesting…

Review: X-Men Legacy #7

X-Men Legacy #7Best use of the word “sproing”… ever… of all time…

Well, last we saw Legion, sorry, David Haller, (he does make a case for not being called Legion any more though personally I think he should embrace it) he was walking away from Xavier’s in nothing but sweat pants. Now he’s found Marty McFly’s jacket and a Hat of Holding +3… seriously… how did he keep his hair in that thing?!?

Since he doesn’t believe in the X-Men, he’s taken matters into his own hands by being pro-active and neutralizing threats before they become serious threats. This also coincides with the Luca storyline in that he goes after the people who corrupted Luca first. It’s a devilish little plot and soon Abigail Brand and S.W.O.R.D. get in on the act to hilarious effect. Seriously, this issue had me laughing out loud. It was very much a departure from previous issues.

The sub-plot is Ruth has been mentally following David there is a mushy moment when their attempt to infiltrate The Church of the Happy Host is likened to a date. I’m still not sure what I think of them as a couple but they kinda grew on me in this issue.

Going back to the change in style and tone in #7… it really is that much different but still in the vein of the previous comics. It’s like having a breather or cool-down after a marathon and really helps with the pacing of the overall story as this is, essentially, a filler comic. If only the artist hadn’t changed to one who draws David like… well… he’s just weird, okay… then this could have been an A++ issue. It will just have to settle for an A.

Review: X-Men Legacy #6

X-Men Legacy #6This issue proves that prognostics really are a pain in the butt.

So, David is able to pull himself together long enough to start using some of his many abilities, getting a self-esteem boost for the win. But ultimately, he has both Daddy issues and one very dangerous personality in his mind and falls apart again. He also obviously doesn’t care about his health cause he goes walking away in the rain in nothing but some sweat pants. (Surely someone at the School would have offered him at least a coat?!?)

Blindfold ends up saving the day, either killing Luca or at least incapacitating him for a while, they didn’t make that quite clear cause he did get stabbed in the back with his body breaking apart but the eyes do go flying off into the air. Oh well, I’m sure it won’t be long till we find out.

I keep thinking that Blindfold has to be a teenager, like 17 or 18… how old is David now? He’s been around awhile and Xavier was fairly older so he should be in at least his mid to late 20s… so not sure what I think about those potentially hooking up, but we’ll see.

Lastly, “Charles Xavier” appears in David’s head but seeing as he kinda ‘transforms’ I’m pretty sure it’s just one of his personalities pulling a fast one on him.

This is a rather middle of the road issue but at least it leans away from all the ‘bad mouthing the x-men to push up David’s character’ stuff for the most part. Hopefully this means the end of the set up phase of the title and we’ll start getting some good adventures and characterization moments. I do give this issue props for the cover page with quotes like “One does not simply…”, “There can be only one.”, and “Epic Fail.”

Review: Uncanny X-Men #2

Uncanny X-Men #2I’ve always prefered Emma Frost as the bad guy. It has nothing to do with Scott or Jean… I just like the concept behind the White Queen. I really think she could have been the one to rule the world… and not through force but in the Emperor Palpatine style where she gets the world handed to her through cunning and subterfuge.

As the good girl, I just find her boring.

In respect to the second issue of the new(er) Uncanny X-Men, I find myself torn trying to figure out what I think of this new iteration of Emma.

While she admits that part of her wants to blame others for her mistakes… the mistakes that’s she coping to, that she is blaming herself for, is hurting Scott for the whole thing she did with Namor. Scott was treating you like crap (cause, you know, he’s a serial adulter) and then you were kinda possessed. Not saying you don’t have stuff to feel guilty for Emma, but that should be so much lower on your list.

As for her teaching and being part of the revolution… that kinda goes back to her older roots of the Hellfire Club and the Massachusetts Academy. She’s also fairly blunt and honest, especially when it comes to Illyana scaring the crap out of her (which she should scare her cause that’s one mentally mucked-up snowflake).

So I’m not really sure if I want to be sympathetic towards her… or root for her to evolve back into the White Queen who could kick all their butts. We’ll definitely have to see where things go with her characterization here in this title… but first let’s see how many survive the Avengers.
