Review: Gambit #4

Finally we wrap up (for the most part) the story of the strange girl who somehow needed to do something that involved ancient demons and… you know, I’m not all to sure really.

Gambit did get his shirt ripped off, does that count for something?

As much as I love Gambit, this first four issues, while being important in showing our hero in a current state of limbo, just didn’t go anywhere story wise that was fun or adventurous. Sure, it was cool to see Gambit fight Quetzalcoatl’s half-cousin, but it was just your typical man-fight-demon-with-style.

Don’t get me wrong, I like that Asmus has gone away from the Gambit tropes of Belle and Rogue and that he’s really trying to get into the mind of Gambit. For that part, I think he’s done a great job. Gambit really is tired and restless. He’s a Rebel Without a Cause who’s settled down and become a school teacher, unable to emotionally get over Rogue.

While in a way this does emasculate Gambit a bit, it’s just too close to the truth in how Gambit would be feeling in this position.

This needed to be done, but let’s hope that now the story and his mood can pick up because I do not want another half-dozen issues of Gambit being moppy/boarderline-emo. We need to see the arc of Gambit taking back his life on every level. Not necessarily returning to a life of crime and quitting the X-Men, but realizing that he is better than all this. We all have that moment in our lives and this is Gambit’s. So far Asmus seems to understand this, let’s hope it continues.

And more shirtless Remy, can’t have enough of that…

A-Babies vs X-Babies

Review: A-Babies vs X-Babies

I love the X-Babies, they are just so CUTE! And this holds true even as they are fighting each other in the biggest baby-battle since… erm… ?

I laughed out loud several times as I read this, both from the dialogue and the visuals.

While it’s not quite as funny as the mini battles in AvX Limited #6, it’s still an awesome read that everyone should get a copy of. I picked up both the original and the variant!

X-Treme X-Men #4

#3 was kinda bland, but we pick back up with the quirkiness in #4 with a bit of a steam-punk vibe. Not quite as funny as the first couple of issues but definitely an improvement off the third.

The thing with this issue is that it feels like a regular story. Not overly gimmicky or anything like that. It’s a solid construct with some interesting twists and no one character is too annoying or underused.

Basically, we’re getting back on track with this comic after a little slump. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next.

AvX Limited Series #6

AvX Limited Series #6

Whatever you think of AvX, whatever issues you may or may not have gotten… GET THIS ONE!

I laughed so hard at some of these Vs panels.

The Cyclops vs Captain was hillarious and so true… so meta… “not cool man!”

The Science Battle… I have NO idea what they are talking about, at all… but the last line made it!

Domino rocks and as for Hawkeye… you know all the male readers were thinking it.

That last panel though was the creme of the crop, perfection! If you get anything AvX related, get this issue!!

Review: Arrow (1S02)

Review: Arrow (1S02)

CW's Arrow

CW’s Arrow

Caught the second episode of Arrow tonight and I’ll be honest, I missed a bit. I decided we needed catfood so drove down to the store and missed about maybe ten minutes? Oh, and I needed to sort out the trash, that missed a couple there too.

Seriously, the show could not hold my interest and what I did see of it kinda annoyed me. For one major irk, a dead body that old would be bloated and squishy!!!! No way after a couple of days (I think it was a couple of days, hard to tell, the editing on this show is annoying, same problem in the first episode with how long did it take him to set up his lair), anyway, no way would it be so firm like that.

And “the man I need to be” stuff was layered on a bit thick. Seriously, writing 101, you got a statement like that, only use it once! And that’s where it’s most effective. Takes the wind out of the sales of the grave stone scene when we’ve heard it like twice already.

But there was a funny thing, my mom calls the cop Dresden, she refuses to learn his name, he’s simply Dresden. That makes it pretty interesting.

Again, a middling episode, not bad, not good either, just nice filler before Supernatural.

Review: Uncanny X-Men #19

Aka, yes, Scott Summers has officially gone insane.

Not a single doubt about it…

The only question is when did he actually start loosing it? Was it when he gained the powers of the Phoenix, was it after House of M, was it when he started to cheat on his wife (either of them), when he lost Jean Grey (either time), or perhaps does it go all the way back to the death of his family?

I really don’t know…

Review: Wolverine and the X-Men #18

Wolverine and the X-Men #18

Wolverine and the X-Men #18
aka good example of a cover that totally mis-represents the story

After last week’s WatX #17 had me in stitches, I was really looking forward to the next one because WatX has been a refreshingly fun comic which, and quote me on this, ‘brought the joy back to comics’.

However, I read #18 and the exact opposite holds true. Framed inside the story of AvX’s final fight (which was both fitting and redundant at the same time), we get a glimpse at… well… not too sure. Husk, who was already not exactly entirely stable, loses it and quits. Idie, who is totally not stable, gets manipulated (which is kinda cool from a psychological perspective). And Broo… what the hell?!

This issue is such a stark contrast, even with some funny elements like the idea of having an “end of the world” dance. It’s so heavy with its themes and dark in its plot points that I feel forlorn (and not in a good way) after reading it.

But again, taken in bits and pieces it’s got some good points… but together it’s just a mess that makes me sad.

Let’s hope once things ‘get back to normal’ at the school there will be a bit more of that joy I have come to love from this series.

Uncanny Avengers #1

Uncanny Avengers #1

Review: Uncanny Avengers #1

Normally I don’t read Avengers titles (I’ve got enough on my plate trying to keep up with the X-Men) but Uncanny Avengers has Rogue and that’s all I needed to hear.

Overall, a great start to the series. We got a download on where everyone is while still leaving enough open to make things interesting. All the interactions were good. Rogue and Wanda was good, I would expect Rogue to be a little more understanding though, but it was the day of the funeral and emotions do run a bit higher.

Love Wanda’s new outfit, but mostly because I have PM’s which date to before we got any of the concept art for Uncanny Avengers which have me putting Wanda into a red leather jacket when she appears later in season one. I came up with the idea quite some time ago but I can only date it to that PM, what can I say, the idea just fits her, you know?

Not sure what’s going on with Red Skull, that ending was a bit out of left field and I’m kinda miffed at what happened to Avalanche… but like I said, nice solid opening. Can’t wait to see what happens next.

And yes, I did buy the Babies variant… might get the Deadpool one if I can manage it.

Review: Arrow (1S01)

CW's Arrow

CW’s Arrow

I’ll admit that I know a little more than diddley squat about Green Arrow. As seen with my fan fic being Marvel based, I’m not much into DC (except to say that Batman: TAS is the second best cartoon of all time). But seeing that I enjoyed at least the first few seasons of Smallville, there are some actors in here that I enjoy, and a tv series based on a comic book is right up my alley, I thought I’d give it a go.

I was told that Green Arrow was basically Batman… with arrows… and not as afraid to hurt and/or kill people… and that’s pretty much what we got here. This really is Batman Begins for the small screen, with arrows, right down to the “thought you were dead” billionaire disappearance only to come back wicked strong fighter and Lone Ranger-esque “I’m really just a playboy, honest”.

Anyway, I’m going to skip over that part because I just don’t have the background to know where they went away from the comics and where they held true. I take this as a good thing as it’s a perspective I’m attempting to write for in my Series.

So all that leaves is… everything else.

The Bad:
The voice over work. Not sure if it’s the actor or the direction or the dialogue itself but it just doesn’t have any punch to it at all. Might as well be reading the phone book and while yes, there are some people I’d happily listen to read the phone book, but this guy ain’t one of them.
Queen looks like a poor man’s Chris O’Donnell.

The Good:
The episode is accessible. As I said, I don’t know much about Green Arrow but I’m not lost, scratching my head, or annoyed that I might be missing the joke.

The Ugly:
It’s so much like Batman Begins and is so overly gritty that I’m ‘so over this’ like last decade. I was hoping for a slightly more light-hearted approach ala Smallville, not this uber-realistic stuff that is the trend. Granted, I could be asking for something that simply isn’t in the comics so what can I say?

The show does come on before Supernatural which I have an on-again off-again love/hate relationship with so I’ll stick out a few more episodes, see what I think once it finds all it’s legs… but until then, giving this series a middle of the road mark, it can go either way.

Oh, and the piece de la resistance? Seeing an advertisement for a local archery shop during the commercial… I’ve never ever seen an ad for this place ever… 😉

Wolverine and the X-Men #17

Wolverine and the X-Men #17

Wolverine and the X-Men #17

I think this is the funniest comic book I have ever read… seriously… from the crazy Nazi Bowling League to Wolvie dressed as Cyclops to a nun representing the internet…

I laughed… so hard…

While the issue did offer some valuable information about Doop and expand his character by leaps and bounds (I never knew he was such a bad-a)… it really was one zany joke after another and all I could do was laugh till I almost cried…

Doop and The Duck… OMG!
I would seriously read a comic of just that… heheheheheheh

It’s go good to be able to pick up a comic and find some laughter and joy… I hope this series continues on this path!
