Fearless Defenders #2I kinda missed the whole New Mutant craze so I don’t know much about Dani Moonstar… but with her short introduction in this issue I think she’s pretty cool. Let’s just hope she can get herself out of whatever mess she’s in.

As for Valkyrie and Misty… this is like the Odd Couple… I love it. Someone was an absolute genius when they thought up this team-up. Misty brings the sass and Valkyrie plays the perfect ‘straight man’.

Though, as much as it annoys me that characters like Rogue and Storm are shown as ‘rejects’ to being Valkyries… I guess it does make sense. Valkyrie has been given a pretty hard thing to do… replace her lost kin with non-Asgardians. That’s gotta chafe in more ways than one. Plus it’s more than about pure strength and capabilities… it’s about the soul as well. Being a Valkyrie, I would imagine, would be less of a job and more of a life choice. Though in a way… I am sure you don’t choose to be a Valkyrie… the life chooses you.

Anyway, now they are going to throw in a warrior for the Queen of the Underworld… yeah, it’s all going to hell in a handbasket. Should be fun!!

X-Treme X-Men #11Moral ambuiguity is a bit of an unlaying theme in this title and this issue really underscored that. I’m not entirely sure who the bad guy was… but as far as Dazzler was concerned, everyone was the bad guy.

Speaking of, Dazzler has really taken a harder edge to her character, she has not been uneffected by the events that have transpired, and her powers are actually pretty kick butt. Could she always use them like this? Regardless, I hope the growth the character received in this title filters into wherever she goes next. I’ve garnered a new respect for Dazzler.

You can tell though that the story is wrapping up, even with the cliffhanger of an ending you know that it’s just way to build up to a finale… and that kinda sucks. It’s really hard to read something when you know it’s about to end especially when it’s just gotten going.

All-New X-Men #9Sometimes I really have to wonder if the X-Men realize how hypocritical they can be at times? There is a fine line between learning how to survive and learning to be soldiers. I don’t think anyone has really thought this through in the X-Men universe… but that is kinda what makes this whole thing with Revolutionary Scott so interesting…

But besides that, Jean and Scott are both on the edge right now. Jean won’t stay out of people’s minds (and is apparently jealous of Mystique just cause Scott had one conversation with her). And Scott is still feeling like the brother living in the shadow of the older brother (or in his case, himself). It’s a powder keg just waiting for something to explode…

And of course Mystique is happy to just cause random havoc… though I doubt there is anything random about her decision to break Lady Mastermind (sorry, just Mastermind now cause Lady Mastermind is apparently sexist) out of jail. Though as jail breaks go… Mystique’s got style, I’ll give her that.

Now with Old Scott and his gang showing up on the school’s doorstep to recruit… yeah… this can’t end well…

Deadpool Killustrated #3The story of Deadpool going around killing famous literary characters stalls out in issue three, it’s all a bit of the same-old. I mean, you wouldn’t think seeing Deadpool killing these guys would get old but it has, already, and mostly because they are all just kinda crammed in there. You have maybe two characters given some dedication but the rest just kinda fly on by and you almost have to shrug ‘oh, another person is dead’.

Also, I’m kinda annoyed that the author doesn’t attempt to highlight or even subtly hint to the allusion of Deadpool being Frankenstein’s Monster. I mean, think about it… he’s almost a textbook example of one. Deadpool even gives the original monster some of his brain so that he now has a partner… but beyond that the author makes no other allusion to just how ironic this is. I’m not sure if this intentional or not. I guess we’ll see come later issues.

I don’t know if it’s just me… but this series just isn’t living up to its potential.

Days of Future Past has started filming and it looks like they are getting some of the “future” out of the way first. This doesn’t mean anything in and of itself as rarely does any movie get filmed linearly. But here are a few images from Bryan Singer’s twitter account, what do they tell us?

Xavier’s alive in the future and looking pretty dusty here, so likely he’s been in the middle of a fight or something along those lines… he’s also standing… but this isn’t actual filming so we can’t read too much into that. However, it would not be surprising to see Xavier walking in DOFP if the easter egg in X3 is anything to go on.

Those little dots are for effects guys to use when putting cgi in later so Bobby is probably going to be iced-up for some part of this (not terribly surprising)… but what is surprising is the beard. Bobby… when the heck were you able to grow facial hair?!?!?! It’s probably a way to show that the future gang can’t exactly stop for personal grooming right now. (The Romy in me thinks you’re trying to look rugged for Rogue cause, well, Gambit… he is ruggedly handsome.)

Cerebro is up and running… though we don’t know what the inside looks like, could be pristine or badly damaged.

And at least someone in the office has a sense of humor…

Review: A+X #6

A+X #6

Who wins in a fight? Cavemen or Astronauts?

That is quite possibly the most epic response to someone attacking Avengers Tower… ever.

And while Wolverine and Captain Marvel are playing their card game…

Gambit and The Thing are busy hustling a card game of their own.

It’s all real beautiful actually… gotta admire it.

X-Treme X-Men #10That moment when the comics and fan-fiction collide.

Not only does Kurt ‘bamf’ off someone’s clothes (how many times have we seen that and variations thereof in fan-fic) but there is literally a scene that echoes something Chellerbelles and I wrote for the Gym Class Heroes series.

I know, I know, total coincidence, but still…

On to this issue of X-Treme X-Men, the gang, after a little relaxation and ‘getting to know you time’ face another in the increasingly questionable moral dilemma’s that the writer has been putting them through. This time it’s a Nazi Xavier and a genocidal Namor. This issue ends on a fairly good cliffhanger, no one is really sure who is the good guy in all this (if there even is one) but innocents are innocents as far as Dazzler is concerned.

The title is coming to a close, only three issues left before the end… I’m really sorry to see it go… makes it hard to read these last few…

The Fearless Defenders #1 - Skottie Young variantHow did I not know there was a piece of Asgard in Oklahoma?!?!?

Seriously, people need to tell me these things.

Anyway, that’s not the reason I picked up this title. As you may know by now I have a bit of an obession with Skottie Young variants and picked this one up along with several others. I knew of Misty Knight and Valkyrie but hadn’t actually read anything with them in it so I don’t know if Cullen Bunn is doing any justice to their original personalities… but I like them!

Misty is a ‘badass private investigator’ and Valkyrie is a freaking valkyrie!

Really, this title does a great job of introducing these characters to the un-initiated. They are strong, kick-butt women without falling into too many tropes like long speeches as to why they are strong characters or too much back-ground dump either. It also ends on a nice cliff-hanger that makes you want to find out more.

Let’s hope this title keeps the momentum.

Review: Morbius #3

Morbius #3The only time the use of the word “oops” after a vampire biting a man’s throat is acceptable.

Morbius had two really strong first issues, the third is a bit lower in quality but still quite good. Nothing can quite go right for Morbius no matter how hard he tries, really underscoring the anti-hero aspect of his character.

But really this is just an extension of previous issue and lead into the next without a lot to hold it together as anything stand alone and kills the momentum just a bit. Still, it’s good to see how the other characters react to him and ‘gang psychology’… but that’s all this issue has going for it other than the usual good dialogue and wonderful use of thought panels.

It will be interesting to see how he gets out of this mess… if he does at all…

Review: Gambit #10

Gambit #10Remy is a sucker for a damsel in distress… but that’s one of things we love about him.

This time him and Joelle head to the snowy Canadian northwest to find something that will help her save her daughter (if that’s not a lie as we learn later in the issue it very well could be). It’s nice though, seeing Gambit rob the facility and really having a great time doing it, he’s a thief at heart, always will be.

The dialogue in this issue is also pretty suburb. From Remy’s comment about almost becoming an architect by accident to how he apparently dreams about being in the Harry Potter universe (Remy, you are totally a Slytherin, sorry!).

Of course, this is the issue with the ‘big moment’ of Rogue coming back into Gambit’s life at the worse possible moment… that being waking him up while he had been sleeping with Joelle out in the woods after possibly (likely) having sex. I kinda like the look on Rogue’s face, she’s not angry, she’s not disappointed, she’s not happy, she’s more like “really? here? how impossibly cliché of you”.

I really REALLY hope that Asmus doesn’t play the ‘jealous x-girlfriend’ card in the next issue because while yes, I am all for the Romy, these two have been broken up for a long time and Rogue specifically told Remy she needed time to think on things, find herself, etc, and so she should totally not be surprised if Gambit took up with someone else, not when she hooked up with Mags. The only thing I can see working is her just being worried about Joelle’s questionable character, and if anything from a friends perspective.

Can’t wait for the next issue!
