When it comes to shared-universe comic book movies – which are, like, so in right now – Warner Bros. are definitely playing catch up. But they do seem to be moving with competitive speed.
According to “knowledgeable people close to the studio,” and quoted by The Wall Street Journal, Warners are looking to fast track a sequel to Man of Steel for release in 2014. That would probably mean they have to get into production in the next six, maybe nine months.
And what’s more, the nameless, knowledgable ones say that the Justice League movie:
could come out as soon as 2015.
Which is actually what we were expecting a half-dozen set backs ago. I guess box office like Man of Steel‘s can really light a fire.
Films can be turned around this quickly and still turn out well, but I am always disappointed by the studios’ insistance on setting release dates before they even have screenplays, let alone actual films.
If Warner Bros. really want to play Marvel at their own game expect locked-in release dates announced by, or maybe at, San Diego Comic-Con.
If Warner Brothers really wants to do this, I think that the important thing that they need to learn from Marvel’s success is the value of patience. WB is in such a rush to get Justice League out there that, if they’re not careful, they’re going to damage the entire DC brand.
Marvel took their time, paced themselves and built a cinematic universe. Man of Steel is a terrific launching pad; now, it’s time to start developing the Flash, Wonder Woman, a new Green Lantern, and so on.
I couldn’t agree more. Though I think, in a way, they were trying to get a start with the Green Lantern but that was a failure. Now they probably feel the pressure of ‘being left behind’ as Marvel moves forward with Phase 2. Heck, even Fox and Sony aren’t doing too bad considering their individual franchises what with Spidey getting three films and FC and DOFP revitalizing the franchise with a crap load of A-Listers.
WB just needs to take a breath, they can do this, they can make something epic, but they don’t really need to compete. I mean, seriously, Marvel and DC haven’t been able to take each other out, the fan base is large enough for both to have their time. If anything, WB should be looking to pick up the slack for when Marvel starts to wane, after all, more ‘average’ people know who Wonder Woman than know who Dr Strange is.
So, yeah, patience is a virtue (unless you’re in a Mummy movie).
