Uncanny Avengers #9So, that happened. Remender ended the previous issue with a bang, literally, then just skips ahead to ‘oh, yeah, we’re good’ and spends the whole issue arguing. Literally, it is nothing but people talking and arguing over the different issues that they face, and not in a decent way either.

The whole M-Word thing, while Bendis wrote is as a civilized discussion, Remender just has Wanda and Rogue bitching each other out. Is this Remender lashing out at his critics?

Everyone is ‘so surprised’ that Logan killed someone. Huh? What part of his catch phrase did they not understand?

It’s all just crappy filler until the big reveal which was spoiled ages ago: The Four Horsemen of the Death. So, yeah, no surprises or, anything, really.

It’s like Remender doesn’t understand how comic books work…

league of extraordinary gentlemenThough I’m sure Alan Moore won’t have many nice things to say about it, 20th Century Televison and their partners at Fox have committed to a new TV adaptation of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, the exceptional comic book series that blends a staggering amount of fictional universes into one, from the worlds of Bram Stoker, HG Wells and Conan Doyle to those of JK Rowling, George Orwell and W. Somerset Maugham.

I’m sure that many of you will recall the adventure-focused Stephen Norrington movie of some ten years back, or the legal shenanigans that followed when Larry Cohen filed a suit alleging Fox had stolen the idea from his rejected pitch, Cast of Characters.

The comics, co-created and superbly illustrated by Kevin O’Neill, are rich and complex and could give rise to years worth of TV, maybe even following their multi-era structure of the comics.

Or, of course, they could be essayed into a lowest common denominator “Steampunk Justice League of the library.”

The only indicator of potential success or failure we have so far is that Michael Green, a writer on Smallville, Green Lantern and Heroes, will be the writer and executive producer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series is being developed with a “put pilot” deal in place. This means that there will be a financial penalty to pay if the show doesn’t go to air.

Of course, Fox are past masters are cutting a show off after just a few episodes, or at least before its due, and for all we know, that could the fate of these Gentlemen too.

Meanwhile, over at Showtime, John Logan, Sam Mendes and JA Bayona are working on the similarly themed Penny Dreadful

All-New X-Men #13Mystique, never change, you are so freaking awesome. I have no idea what your real end-game is but apparently you want to buy a freaking island, Madripoor no less… that’s… that’s… yeah, just don’t change, ever.

In other news that isn’t that surprising, Bendis touches on the M-Word controversy and does a better job with it than Remender did. I do like how Kitty explains the concept of “Mutant and Proud” though not in so many words. This is the kind of discussion that really needs to be done with the idea of the “M-Word” floating out there but Remender isn’t really thinking it through and seems to have just tossed the comments in for the shock factor leaving the rest of the writers to do what he should be doing (and they are doing a great job of it).

It also makes me wonder if when Kitty says that Alex doesn’t speak for her… that maybe it’s Bendis saying Remender doesn’t speak for him.

As for the rest of the story, Lady Mastermind is going to do some damage with her illusion on Jean. Lady M teaming with Mystique really was a great idea… between the two of them, I’m not sure the core X-Men team really have a chance… (though, yeah, the X-Men will win, of course, le sigh).

Uncanny X-Men #7Have I mentioned Illyana kinda scares the crap out of me?

This issue didn’t do much to levy that fear, though it did pretty much stake her claim in BAMF territory. Not only does she time travel back in time to talk to Dr Strange pre-Avengers, but she basically absorbed Limbo. Something tells me that’s not gonna end well. If anything that’s got to induce some serious heartburn…

The new recruits though had a trial by fire and are going to come out of it worse for wear. They could end up losing some of the team, dunno, but it’s nice to see one of the Stepford Cuckoos actually acting like real human teenage girl for once. And good to see Scott not trying to cover up his power malfunction as well. He admits that they all need new training.

I think the really scary part is that this all might actually work out for them since they are being open and honest with most everything, even if they really don’t want to let anyone leave.

However, one can never be too sure in an X-Men comic where things will actually go from here…

Nebula

When Den of Geek say they have a solid source, I believe they mean cast iron. Their slightly sucky team may have fallen someway behind ours in last week’s big Monsters University quiz night, but they’re certainly good guys and trustworthy.

Well, that’s the UK Den of Geek anyhow. I really can’t vouch for the US lot.

So, according to the UK Den’s new report, the characters being played by Benicio Del Toro and Karen Gillan in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy are The Collector and Nebula respectively. At the same time, they’re repeating that Lee Pace is playing Ronan the Accuser, which isn’t new news, but now, I’d say, rather solidly locked down.

Previously, we’d heard that Del Toro’s character will be in multiple Marvel movies, which kind of threw me off the scent somewhat. How will they use The Collector over and over again? I can see how he might factor into The Avengers sequel, but beyond that, I’m at a loss. For now.

We’ve also heard that Ronan the Accuser will “swap sides” as the film goes on, in keeping with his comic book legacy.

Add Nebula, the space pirate and alleged grand daughter of Thanos – though I would like to see the DNA test results, please – and I think it’s signed, sealed and on the way to the postbox that this plot line will feature the Infinity Gems.

Guardians of the Galaxy is in production in the UK now. Expect a lot more to break around the time of Comic Con.

Bryan Singer just tweeted a pic that pretty much proves they were planning on using Quicksilver since before the Whedon/Disney announcement.

Maximoff House

The big question, is this a twin living on their own or both with their mother (if they don’t make her missing/dead as is canon) or with their adoptive parents? Seeing as the actor is in his late 20s I doubt he’s playing a 15 year old so not sure he’d be living with his parents as a 20-something. It could be his own house. And if it is, would Crystal be in the picture yet?

Is this why we haven’t heard anything about Wanda? Magneto goes to his son, who is living alone (or with Crystal), to get his help, so no sister. There was talk that the team will need Quicksilver’s speed for something specific. Does this mean that the two teams are working together? Or Charles knows about Magneto’s kids? Or they just know about a super speed mutant… and coincidences happen? So many options, some more awesome than others.

As for the Maximoff cold war, it takes time to set up a location for filming, you have scouting, then getting it prepped, etc. This sequence also had to be written and if they are bothering with doing outside shots then it may be more substantial than a quick scene. Not something to be likely be written on the fly. Lastly, the rumor after First Class was that this movie would be more Magneto-centric which this would play right into and show that Quicksilver was meant from the beginning.

Still no words on whether or not Wanda will be involved at all, but let’s hope she at least gets a mention…

If I don’t post for awhile… it’s because I’m playing Deadpool: The Video Game.

So far, so good… 😉

Okay, only one of these is brand new, I somehow missed the other two. Anyway, Collider got the exclusive release of a new Jean Gray poster ala sumi-e ink art. While the others have been fairly original, even Wolverine was done up in Japanese clothing, Jean’s poster is just a copy of her X3 promo images.

X-Men 3 - Jean Gray promo

I wouldn’t read into Jean getting her own poster. She’s the second most recognizable character from the franchise, so they want to splash her around for that recognition. This happens all the time (Vin Diesel in Tokyo Drift anyone…). Still, would have liked to see something a bit more original than a direct copy cause this is a really pretty style of artwork.

There are two other posters I missed which are on Collider, one for Viper and Yukio. I’m not too impressed with them either. I don’t like the tongue thing on Viper and I’m not sure what’s going on with Yukio’s mouth, though, if I ignore that part, Yukio’s is actually pretty bad ass.

Morbius #5So, everything that I was praising about the first four issues… kinda got forgotten in this one.

The wonderfully subtle nature of the rise of the Anti-Hero is replaced with two very big speeches, one by Morbius himself. The speech really comes out of nowhere since previously he’s been more of the strong silent type. As for the speech itself… it’s a speech, and not a particularly stirring one, just kinda makes the pacing of the overall story grind to a halt.

Then The Rose shows up and Morbius doesn’t rip his neck open? What’s up with that? I mean, he was standing there just shooting people when they are down and Morbius decides a friendly chat is required? I don’t understand this…

The whole issue seems really rushed to get Morbius set up into his role as community leader/vigilante. Which kinda sucks because they really had an opportunity here to do some great stuff. Maybe they still will, after all, The Rose is still out there and this can’t be the end of the troubles in Brownsville.

Unfortunately, Morbius hasn’t been doing well in sales so not sure if they will get the chance.

A+X #8Lockheed has a thing for Spider-woman. Why not?

As for Kitty, that’s a very interesting take on her power, using it to cause brain disruption. I like it when writers think outside the box like that, not only is it new, but it shows progression of a character who’s been around forever. It hints that she might have learned that in one of the titles I don’t read, and now I kinda wish I had.

The second story is one of the most unlikely odd couples I have ever read, that of Deadpool and Hawkeye.  I mean, any time Deadpool is the one to be concerned because “I can walk away from this but you can’t” then you know you got problems. And the hilarity just rolls off of every page as Deadpool takes up shooting arrows and Hawkeye is “always feel bad punching out a literate villain. makes me feel like a bully”.

And, of course, it was all about food.

I don’t care much for Hawkeye, but I will read the hell out of any more Deadpool/Hawkeye team ups if written by Hastings, cause this was something down right magical in how awesome it was.
