Review: Deadpool #6

Deadpool #6Finally we finish out the Dead Presidents arc and while Washington goes down with a little less effort than I would expect… the pop culture references in this particular issue are quite something. Almost every single page had one and they actually worked with the story rather than being forced in.

There was also reference again to Dr Strange and Wade’s ‘problem’ which I want to hear more of… and who was the girl who saw him in the afterlife? Death herself? Someone he knows? Jean Grey being silly? I like that the author shows that there is more to this than some gross jokes and hopefully we’ll really get down to business with Deadpool as a character in later issues.

As for what happened to Preston… I did predict that the Necromancer would do something… but have to admit, didn’t expect him to store Preston’s conscious in Wade. Wade, of course, got a little sentimental during the fight with Washington about losing Preston which was good to see. There wasn’t quite the perfect balance of ‘caring Deadpool’ and ‘whatevers Deadpool’ that we have come to know but it was played up quite nicely.

Overall this arc has been hit and miss of mostly just really gross Dead President and ye old Pop Culture clash jokes. While it’s been fun, again, I want to see the story get a bit more serious and delve into Deadpool more. Let’s see what the next issue brings…

Deadpool Killustrated #2Killustrated #2 totally makes up for Killustrated #1.

#1 suffered that major failing of spending way too much time setting up what was going on… especially when the something going on is Deadpool who really doesn’t need a reason to do anything that he does… he’s freaking Deadpool.

#2 has Deadpool going after more of the classics but instead of just simply hacking off heads, the literary archetypes seem to morph at will into the various classic Marvel characters that took inspiration from them. Such as Dracula looking a little Sinister, the Headless Horsemen becoming both Ghost Rider and Green Goblin, and my favorite, the girls of Little Women turning into Black Widow, She-Hulk, Elektra, and Mockingbird. Those Little Women beat the snot out of Deadpool… that was classy.

In all this, our favorite detective, Sherlock Holmes (the Basil Rathbone version), has discovered Deadpool is afoot and put a gang together to stop him. And it’s a pretty random group of Beowulf, Natty Bumpo, and Mulan (someone watching Once Upon a Time recently?).

The only real bad thing I have to say about this issue is that Tom Sawyer gets killed ‘off camera’, and while it’s really well done, I can’t help but think he might have morphed into Remy LeBeau… guess we’ll have to wait and see if Deadpool is going to take on Oliver Twist… then we might get a glimpse of our lovable Cajun…

and yes, sometimes I do have a one track mind…

Review: Deadpool #5

Deadpool #5Deadpool just keeps getting grosser and messier. From the writing to the actual visuals… it’s just a bit disgusting really.

The story itself hasn’t really moved much beyond some balls-to-the-walls presidential butt-kicking… but even that is losing its charm. (Also, how in the world were those monkeys up there that whole time?)

Even the cliff-hanger ending of this issue is less than spectacular. Deadpool will heal and there is a Necromancer handy to take care of the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. We can see the next issue a mile away, the only surprise would be the agent not being brought back to life (or not beind turned into a zombie-like-fiend). Though even if she does die, maybe ol’ Ben can get a friend now?

There seems to be a trend of a lack of complexity with Deadpool in the last couple of issues… nothing has been touched on Dr Strange’s comments as well. While I do like a plethora of fun jokes at Deadpool’s expense, he’s a real character with real depth… let’s hope we’re getting to that…

CinemaBlend – Bryan Singer Hints About Peter Dinklage’s X-Men: Days Of Future Past Character
“He’ll be himself. Not that he’ll be playing Peter Dinklage, he’ll be playing this character. It’s not a shy character. He’s just such a phenomenal actor; I’m a huge fan of Peter’s and Game of Thrones. He was my first choice and I was really happy [about the casting]. It’s so funny to talk to him because he does that impeccable accent [on Game of Thrones] and then you talk to him and he’s this guy from New Jersey.”

ComicBookMovie – Bryan Singer Talks About His  Role In X-MEN: FIRST CLASS
“It would be [weird to direct Days of Future Past]  if I didn’t write the story for X-Men: First Class. I wrote the story to that  movie and I produced it and I was instrumental in the casting, in design and  involved in the post-production, so I was part of that movie. I initiated that  movie and originated it so in that way, and worked with Matthew and I was the  one who actually hired Matthew so in a way I feel like I’m not completely  entering someone else’s franchise. I’m entering one that he executed  wonderfully, but one that I was also part of.”

Review: Deadpool #4

Quick! How many US Presidents can you name!

That’s pretty much the gist of this issue of Deadpool. We’ve had 44 Presidents and 39 of them are currently undead and tearing things up. It’s still one of the most off the wall plot lines I’ve ever seen, even for Deadpool, but in a way it kinda works. You have the underlying political satire (which may or may not be on purpose) and the fact that this is Deadpool, this is like a Thursday for him.

But back to the Dead Presidents, there have been several Presidents that either had a lackluster run or were simply forgotten to time by the average Joe. This issue sees Deadpool quickly dispatching all the “D-List Presidents” and getting them out of the way for the “A-List Presidents” like Lincoln, Nixon, and J.F.K…. which, yeah, Deadpool should never, EVER, be allowed to dress up like Marilyn Monroe ever again. Just saying.

This leads up to a cage-match fight with Abe Lincoln, wherein Deadpool asks: “Did you ever go to Canada and put a short, hairy baby in a woman?” I can only guess he is referring to Logan but… why? That’s not something I want to envision!!!

Lastly, the art work on this issue still presents us with some of the grossest renderings of Wade’s skin and/or mutilated body. It really is gross.

The most remarkable thing about this title so far is that while it seems to be ‘all over the place’, it’s really not. There is a distinct train of thought, as crazy as it is, and each point is leading to the next. It’s definitely making for one of the strangest reads…

I keep thinking about this event that took place on Saturday and decided I needed to share.

So, a writing friend of mine who had never read comics in their life (but seen comic book movies) decided to tag along to the comic book store with me and another friend who is into comics.

We show our newbie friend were everything is, point out titles which we read, see what she might want to try…

She picks one up and goes “Is that elephant holding a gun? It is, the elephant is holding a gun! I have to get this one!”

It was Deadpool #2

She ended up leaving the comic book store with Deadpool #1-3…

No word yet if she still considers us friends.
