X-Men: Days Of Future Past Plans Reshoots In Montreal

X-Men: Days Of Future Past Plans Reshoots In Montreal image
One of the most encouraging changes I’ve seen in movie fandom over the last five years is in the way we understand news about reshoots. Just a few years ago word about additional shooting days for something like Where the Wild Things Are or Sherlock Holmes would send us and the rest of the Internet into a tizzy, with everyone assuming that something disastrous was happening, that the director had been forced off the movie and that the studio was ruining everything. Sometimes, of course, it was true– Jonah Hex‘s reshoots were only the beginning of its troubles. But most of the time, especially on hugely expensive movies, it’s just part of making sure that spending all that money was worth it.

Which brings us to X-Men: Days of Future Past, now going into reshoots in Montreal according to The Calgary Herald. The production was a huge boon for Montreal when it started there earlier this year, and will reportedly be adding several extra weeks of production– Quebec film commissioner Hans Fraikin calls it “a big reshoot” while also noting that this kind of extra production “happens all the time, especially with big pictures.” And just how big X-Men: Days of Future Past is may be more than any of us were expecting– according to Fraikin it’s the second-biggest production in 20th Century Fox history, just below Avatar. That probably means a final budget way, way bigger than the $160 million it cost to make X-Men: First Class— and if you remember just how cheap the Emma Frost diamond effects looked in that first one, you know why the extra cash is such a good thing.

Not that we were relying on budget to get us excited about Days of Future Past— with everything from Peter Dinklage as a mustache-wearing villain to two versions each of bothProfessor X and Magneto, the movie has enough going on that I’d probably watch a version of it made for 15 bucks and the promise of free popcorn for the entire crew. Most of the expensive effects on the movie aren’t yet finished– and neither is the filming, apparently– but we finally got our first look at the superhero sequel when the teaser trailer emerged online a few weeks ago. Check it out below, and share your speculation about what’s happening in the reshoots in the comments.

Commissioner James Gordonvia Deadline

Fox Nabs Gotham City Origin Drama About Commissioner Gordon From Bruno Heller & Warner Bros. TV With Series Commitment

EXCLUSIVE: In one of the biggest drama deals this season, after a bidding war, Fox has landed Gotham, from Warner Bros. TV and The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller, with a series commitment. For Gotham, Warner Bros TV is mining one of DC Comics‘ most popular character universes, Batman. It explores the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and the villains who made Gotham City famous. In Gotham, Gordon is still a detective with the Gotham City Police Department and has yet to meet Batman, who will not be part of the series. The Gordon character was introduced in 1939 in the very first Batman comic. Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Commissioner Gordon has appeared in comic books as well as Batman films and series, including in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, where he was played by Gary Oldman. Along with the Superman franchise, the Batman universe is probably the most prized DC property.

While Superman spawned the long-running series Smallville, this is the first series featuring a character from the world of Batman in a very long time as WBTV had been exploring a Gotham City-set show for more than a year. It is the second high-profile WBTV/DC drama in the works for next season, along with Flash at the CW. In addition to Gotham, WME-repped Heller has the Mars drama Red at the CW. Gotham joins CBS’ sci-fi drama Extant as the two hottest drama projects this season, both sparking bidding wars and landing a series commitment and series order, respectively.

So the comic book related tv shows are still coming out of the woodwork, but we can’t get the Wonder Woman movie or a decent TV series off the ground? I wonder though, will we get Harley Quinn in this? That would be worth it, if she’s done right.

Fox just wrapped principle photography on 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past this past weekend. So while next up on the studio’s plate will be post-production work and gearing up production for 2015’s Fantastic Four reboot by Chronicle’s Josh Trank, if their Marvel movie consultant Mark Millar has his way, those two things could be very closely related.

In an excerpt from an upcoming longer interview in SFX #239, Millar tells that “without question” he thinks crossover between the X-Men and FF universes (ala the Marvel Cinematic Universe) is in Fox’s future.

“I think you have to see some of these guys showing up in each other’s movies,” he said. “I think the most exciting thing in superhero movies, until The Avengers came along, was when Nick Fury showed up in Iron Man. Even though it was a guy with an eye patch it was really cool – and I expect we will see more of that.”

Next year’s Days of Future Past post-credit scene might be the first opportunity Fox will have to co-opt Marvel Studios’ marketing roadmap, and given The Wolverine’s post-credit baton-passing to Days, staying to the very end of next summer’s X-Men epic would be advisable for FF fans.

And even though Millar has a sentimental attachment to Fox’s first FF movie, the writer was upfront in his assessment of the film and its director, Tim Story.

“These first two movies were not very good but I’m quite sentimental towards them,” Millar responded, asked by SFX what the new film will need to get right. “I took my youngest daughter to see the first one, she was only five when it came out, and she thought it was the best film ever made. At the end, when Johnny Storm says, ‘Flame on!’ for the first time, she thanked me for taking her to see it. So even though it was a crap movie that memory makes me sort-of like it in a strange way.”

“Sam Raimi gave us a great Spider-Man. Christopher Nolan gave us a great Batman. So a brilliant director is probably the most important thing for a great Fantastic Four,” continued Millar. “Tim Story was seen as an odd choice for Fantastic Four but when you have a Josh Trank you know you are in safe hands.”

X-Force #1I hadn’t been very quick to believe, but seems I was mistaken. The X-Force movie will be happening according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Jeff Wadlow, who is readying for the Aug. 16 release of Kick-Ass 2, has been tapped to write an adaptation of X-Force, an X-Men spinoff being developed by 20th Century Fox. … Longtime X-Men franchise producer Lauren Shuler Donner is producing X-Force.

So the question now is: Which X-Force team will they be using?

If they go classic, they already started on it by bringing Warpath into the movies. He’s in the ‘future’ part so it wouldn’t be hard to say that the X-Force team is a continuation of previously established film canon.

But the big issue is with Cable. Cable may not have been in every version of the X-Force team, but not having him in an X-Force movie is like having an X-Men movie with no Xavier. Though seeing that Jean (well, Maddy, but as no clones were mentioned in the films I’d assume they’d make Jean the mother) and Scott both died in the films without procreating, how are they going to explain where he comes from?

This could mean they are definitely rebooting the universe with DOFP and bringing back previously killed characters. Though Cable would have to be a teenager in the X-Force movie, not enough time has passed to make him a full on adult, well, it might work depending on how old Scott/Jean were supposed to be in 2000’s X-Men and when this X-Force movie comes out, but it would be pretty tight. Though they could go the time traveling route too…

As much as I’m really interested in this… the logistics puzzle me and not sure I want a Cable-less X-Force movie. So until we know more, or see DOFP and what it does to the timeline, I’m going to refrain from further speculation.

XMTFFS Note: I don’t trust anything Mark Millar says… so taking this with a big ol’ grain of salt.

X-Force

by Brett White

Get ready for the force to be reckoned with! X-MenFilms.com reports that Fox Studios has registered a very x-citing domain name: xforcemovie.com. Yeah. X-Force.

The site quotes an interview conducted by Comic Book Resources with Fox’s comic creative consultant Mark Millar, wherein Millar discusses the possibility of an X-Force movie.

“You have to remember that Fox grabbed the X-Men back in the ’90s because it was the biggest franchise in the world,” said Millar. “So X-Force or Cable or Deadpool — all these amazing characters are things we haven’t really gotten to yet. ‘X-Force’ #1 was the second biggest book of all time behind Jim Lee’s ‘X-Men’ #1, so there’s an immediate brand recognition to that stuff and a build in fanbase.”

For those not in the know, X-Force is title bestowed on a number of X-Men spin-off teams dedicated to preserving Xavier’s dream of mutant and human coexistence and/or protecting the mutant race by any means necessary. The idea originated from the minds of artist Rob Liefeld and writer Fabian Nicieza, as they were working on the “New Mutants” comic in the late ’80s and early ’90s. The duo reinvented the team as X-Force in 1991, with the young mutants under the guidance of the time-traveling half-machine military leader Cable.

In the past decade, X-Force has been used to describe two teams with varying degrees of ties to the original one; the first was a black ops squad created by Cyclops and led by Wolverine to take out threats, and the second was a tighter-knit team created behind Cyclops’ back to go on the same types of missions.

Full disclosure: I am a stupid big X-Force fan. The first 100 issues of the first volume are my absolute favorite run of issues of anything published in the ’90s. Cannonball, Boomer, Siryn and Warpath remain some of my favorite characters of all time, and I urge everyone to read the masterpiece that is “X-Force” vol. 1 #19. My personal favorite stretch of issues has to be issues #19-25 of volume 1, by Fabian Nicieza and artist Greg Capullo. They’re incredibly well done action stories with plenty of hilarious and touching character moments. It’s great.

Any talk of an X-Force movie has to include a mention of the constantly languishing Deadpool film. The character originally debuted in the final issues of “New Mutants” before becoming an “X-Force” foe in the series early issues. Deadpool then became a permanent member of the squad in the third ongoing series, “Uncanny X-Force.”

The large “X-Men: Days of Future Past” cast actually contains two prominent X-Force members. Adan Canto will portray Sunspot, and Booboo Stewart will bring Warpath to life. While it’s still too early to tell if  “Days of Future Past” will lead to an “X-Force” film, it’s definitely a possibility.

league of extraordinary gentlemenThough I’m sure Alan Moore won’t have many nice things to say about it, 20th Century Televison and their partners at Fox have committed to a new TV adaptation of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, the exceptional comic book series that blends a staggering amount of fictional universes into one, from the worlds of Bram Stoker, HG Wells and Conan Doyle to those of JK Rowling, George Orwell and W. Somerset Maugham.

I’m sure that many of you will recall the adventure-focused Stephen Norrington movie of some ten years back, or the legal shenanigans that followed when Larry Cohen filed a suit alleging Fox had stolen the idea from his rejected pitch, Cast of Characters.

The comics, co-created and superbly illustrated by Kevin O’Neill, are rich and complex and could give rise to years worth of TV, maybe even following their multi-era structure of the comics.

Or, of course, they could be essayed into a lowest common denominator “Steampunk Justice League of the library.”

The only indicator of potential success or failure we have so far is that Michael Green, a writer on Smallville, Green Lantern and Heroes, will be the writer and executive producer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series is being developed with a “put pilot” deal in place. This means that there will be a financial penalty to pay if the show doesn’t go to air.

Of course, Fox are past masters are cutting a show off after just a few episodes, or at least before its due, and for all we know, that could the fate of these Gentlemen too.

Meanwhile, over at Showtime, John Logan, Sam Mendes and JA Bayona are working on the similarly themed Penny Dreadful

Aaron Taylor-JohnsonOkay, if ‘sources close to the production’ of Avengers 2 is to be believed as reported by The Wrap, then Whedon and Marvel/Disney are looking to cast Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver. He’s the right age, British, and knows a little bit about being an action super-hero because he plays Dave Lizewski aka Kick Ass.

Kick Ass is of course the title character of the Kick Ass comics owned by Marvel.

A comic written by Mark Millar… who is Fox’s ‘consultant’ for their Marvel/super hero films, although it’s unclear just how much input or direction he has had on Days of Future Past.

It would be even crazier if Kick Ass was a Fox film but it was distributed domestically by Lionsgate, the sequel by Universal.

Now, the casting rumor is coming quite soon after Bryan Singer tweeted his now edited Avengers tweet announcing Quicksilver had already been cast for Days of Future Past, which in turn came only weeks after Whedon confirmed Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch will be in Avengers 2.

This could all be a coincidence but when they start to stack up…

While I still give Singer the benefit of the doubt on his using Quicksilver (considering early rumors where that the First Class sequel was going to center more on Magneto it makes sense his son would be included so Quicksilver could have been planned from the very beginning), it makes me wonder if we’ll be seeing a lot more little ‘pokes and prods’. Neither studio want to look like bullies, already Marvel/Disney has egg on its face with the issues surrounding how much they pay their lead actors, so I doubt things will get too heated in any way.

Though I am very much interested to see just how far this Cold War might extend between these two companies… and how many other characters might get dragged into the mix.

As for Aaron, to be honest, I’ve only ever seen him in Kick Ass and from what I’ve seen there… I’ve got no quarrel with this casting choice.

It’s going to be a big week for Wolverine, the trailer for the film is set to debut with G.I. Joe 2 this friday, with an advance of the trailer to appear Wednesday.

So here is some of the new stuff we got today and what it all means.

BleedingCool – The Wolverine “Tweaser” Footage Released On Vine By Director James Mangold – It’s a bit pointless to do a screen cap run down of this as the full trailer is just around the corner. From what I can see though, we have Wolvie fighting a samurai who may or may not be the Silver Samurai as there is no costume on the guy, so could be a lackey. We do get a glimpse of the Silver Samurai but they really are being less than generous with showing him. We also see the funeral get ninja’d by some… ninjas. Wolvie is also held by Viper (which we see in the stills below). A lot of shirtless Hugh Jackman.  Some kind of fight on a plane or helicopter. Most of this we already knew… the rest is hard to figure out without more context. So, yeah, don’t know a whole heck of a lot here other than a confirmed cameo which I talk about farther down. Expect a more detailed analysis from me once we get the full trailer.

ComicBookMovie – THE WOLVERINE Director Talks  Death, Pain, Toxin And Anime
Mariko (Tao Okamoto) is Logan’s primary love interest in the film.  Mangold provided a little background about where we find  Mariko at the start of the film, “At the time this movie opens, there’s a  kind of gangland war going on between law enforcement and the Yakuza, and  there’s been a lot of kidnappings and extortion.  So she’s someone who’s under threat.” – I don’t know this story as well as I’d like… but I always thought of Mariko as someone who could take care of herself? If not through force than through cunning. Hopefully we’ll see some of that here rather than this being boiled down to a tropey ‘hero saves the princess’ storyline.

ComicBookMovie – THE WOLVERINE trailer rated by BBFC – The BBC has rated the Wolverine trailer as 15 which overlaps the US’s PG-13 and R. Trailers tend to get cut down so that they can play on more screens because you don’t want to put a rated R trailer on a rated PG-13 film. Now, there is a lot of over lapping as the US and the UK do not always see eye to eye on what is acceptable, but the fact that the trailer for Wolverine is rated 15, even if this is an International cut that we won’t get except via YouTube, means that Wolverine is going to be a very violent film and unlike all the other X-Men films before. Somehow I doubt it will get an R rating here in the US as they’ll want to keep open a wider audience for the film, but now it seems likely they are going to push the limits of the PG-13 rating. The question is, does this bode well or bad for Wolverine? Well, Wolverine is an inherently violent character and samurai films aren’t exactly light on the violence either… so it really comes down to the way it’s done… though I’m sure a lot of fan boys are very happy to hear that Wolvie won’t be pussy-footing around.

ComicBookMovie – Sneak Peek At THE WOLVERINE  Confirms Famke Janssen Cameo – I thought about listing this as a spoiler but then realized that they put it right out in the sneak of the trailer so they aren’t exactly hiding it. This, added with the fact that it’s all glowey in the image which usually denotes some kind of memory/flashback, means to me that it’s just that, a flashback. This was one of the two possibilities that we had for Jean returning. So, unfortunately this means Jean doesn’t show up at the end in a ‘I’m not dead, you need to go and change the future, blah blah blah’ which would have been a great tie into First Class (if Wolvie is the time traveler). Now, this doesn’t mean that both can’t happen, a memory flashback in the first of the film to remind the audience where Wolvie is in his life and then boom, Jean shows up again at the end and it’s a massive WTF moment that will leave people in anticipation of Days of Future Past.

ComicBookMovie – 20th Century Fox Puts New  International Poster For THE WOLVERINE Into Motion

Entertainment Weekly – ‘The Wolverine’: 8 New Photos!

Most of the shots we get of Logan has him either in this black suit (from a funeral) or in the tank (see below). The funeral is likely early on in the movie as this will bring Logan and Mariko together, but they are holding back on showing us some of the later stuff, especially with the Silver Samurai.

You can already see that Wolvie and Yukio do not seem to like each other. And now that I think about it, could the tank be what’s under his shirt? Like maybe Logan doesn’t get a chance to change? That would make this a rather face paced “happens over a short period of time” kind of film.

Viper is originally a HYDRA villain and it’s unknown at this time just how much, if any, HYDRA is involved or even exists in the X-Men universe. We haven’t see any HYDRA symbols or badges so she could just be a bad guy who goes by Viper. And seeing as she has been showed off and the Silver Samurai hasn’t… makes me wonder just how big a role she actually has… not that it’s bigger, but that they don’t mind spoiling scenes with her. Or maybe they just want to entice the male audience…

Yukio isn’t messing around it appears… I do like the way they have her here, a much more modern version of the character… but like Mariko, she seems too young for her role. We’ll just have to see how she plays it.

ComicBookMovie – THE WOLVERINE: Hugh Jackman  Unleashes His Rage In 2 New Posters – Yeah, they should have kept the Japanese style and not gone for a Darth Vader NNNnnooooo!!! moment… and the ninja poster looks like a really bad fan poster photo manip… eek! Fox’s horrible movie posters strikes again!

CinemaBlend reports Fox has given a release date for the new Fantastic Four reboot. It will hit early, March 6th, 2015, likely attempting to get a jump on Avengers 2 and the Justice league movie.

I will say this… this new Fantastic Four doesn’t have a very high bar to be held against considering the last outing… and the one before that which never actually made it onto the screen.

Fox released the new teaser one-sheet for The Wolverine and I snagged it thanks to CinemaBlend. Now, Fox has had a bad run of X-Men posters lately, I mean, all of their FC posters were bad photo-shops and completely devoid of any imagination. But with The Wolverine… I think they have a winner.
