Review: Gambit #8

After a nice little run of issues where Gambit grinned his way across the UK and proved he’s no one’s patsy, this issue does leave one a bit wanting.

Yes, we do get a shirtless Remy, something you can never get enough of, but Asmus decided to get a little too long-winded in his thought bubbles for Gambit. It worked for the first couple of issues because he was setting the stage, but here, it completely distracts from any sense of movement or action that might be taking place.  It was a good back-story Asmus was telling… just wrong place, wrong time.

Basically, this is the comic equvalant of something I always complain about in tv and movies, which is too much ‘speechifying’ of the character’s emotions. Gambit is also always better when you don’t know what is going on behind that Cajun Devil smile of his.

Number 8 really felt like a bridge-issue, something to get us from point A to point B. This isn’t neccesarly a bad thing, we need those issues, but this one could have used a bit more polish.

And possibly more dinosaurs.

Is Gambit in Serious Danger of Being Cancelled Very Soon?

After hearing that X-Treme X-Men was cancelled due to sales below 20K, I got to thinking about some of the other titles I read and if they were in any danger of being cancelled themselves. The most important one would be Gambit’s solo series. Here is his sales figures courtesy of ICV2.

Gambit #1 – 40,418
Gambit #2 – 32,336
Gambit #3 – 28,530
Gambit #4 – 27,828
Gambit #5 – 26,723
Gambit #6 – 25,522
Gambit #7 – 23,978

January numbers are not available yet, obviously.

Notice the steady decline? While there hasn’t been any massively huge drops since the 8k drop between 1 & 2, a 1k to 2k drop every issue is nothing to ignore and I’m sure Marvel are looking at those numbers very closely.

Let us compare gambit’s numbers to the Hawkeye solo series which was launched at about the same time and has been ‘critically acclaimed’.

Hawkeye #1 – 41,9256,394
Hawkeye #2 – 33,563
Hawkeye #3 – 35,403
Hawkeye #4 – 34,208
Hawkeye #5 – 34,385
Hawkeye #6 – 33,440

Hawkeye did have a more massive 14k drop from the first issue but unlike Gambit it has remained steady around 34k in readership. And, of course, Hawkeye did get a boost from the current Avengers movie making him better known to the more recent generation of comic book readers.

Now let’s look at the cancelled X-Treme X-Men title which was also launched about the same time.

X-Treme X-Men #1 – 36,802
X-Treme X-Men #2 – 25,689
X-Treme X-Men #3 – 24,490
X-Treme X-Men #4 – 22,584
X-Treme X-Men #5 – 19,841
X-Treme X-Men #6 – 17,947
X-Treme X-Men #7 – 17,602
X-Treme X-Men #7.1 – 16,682
X-Treme X-Men #8 – 16,536

It didn’t launch nearly as high as Gambit or Hawkeye, but after a 11k drop it also did the steady 1k to 2k drop every issue.

Seeing that Gambit has been slowly declining as X-Treme did is not good. He keeps on this slide and he’ll be below the 20k mark before April when Rogue is set to appear. But this also begs the question: how much will Rogue and the Rogue/Gambit shippers boost the sales? A lot of Romy fans are already reading Gambit anyway because they like Gambit on his own (though I do wonder how many were turned off by the lack of Romy or the Joelle character).

Even if the April Gambit issues jump in sales due to Romy, would it be too late to save Gambit if he drops below 20k in Feb/Mar? How far and how long does the drop have to go? X-Termination, which is the arc that ends X-Treme X-Men, was announced in back in November. X-Treme had already dropped to 19,841 in October.  The question is wether they decided to end X-Treme then or when they got November’s totals? Note: Age of Apocalypse #9, the other cancelled title, did 20,630 in November, and Astonishing X-Men, the only X-Termination crossover that survived, did 27,583.

Granted, if they decided to cancel Gambit in March they would still have to finish out the issues in the works which, since we get them three months in advance, could add a buffer. If they see Gambit spike due to Romy, they would have time to call off any cancellation. It’s also possible they might wait to see what Rogue does for sales.

Gambit has had its best issue yet with what a lot of fans have come to want to see from Gambit, also, news only recently struck that yes, Rogue will be here in April for at least two issues. How did this effect January sales? How will it affect February?

I don’t pretend to be an expert, this whole industry is rather new to me actually, but the numbers don’t lie. If Gambit doesn’t see an increase, or at least a plateau of sales, then he’s going to be gone before the title is even legal to drive.

Review: A+X #3

I read a review for this issue and found it to be so completely opposite of how I felt about A+X #3 that it was almost comical.

The first story is Storm and Black Panther. Not only does Storm act a bit petty at times (though admits to it) but she really does have classic ‘ex-girlfriend syndrome’ while BP just stands around all ‘well, I did the right thing’ even though he’s the freaking King and basically Batman meaning he can do whatever the hell he wants.

This is only less shameful than their fight in the AvX matchups where Storm declares “maybe if we had children we could have worked things out”. Iron clad proof that there needs to be more female writers on staff.

Course, I then admit to my hypocrisy when I mention the second pair up of Gambit and Hawkeye, two gentlemen who are very easy on the eyes and women just fall all over (and who are currently battling it out for sales of their launched-at-the-same-time solo titles), and just how yummy they are.

Granted, their rescue of a ‘Damsel in Distress’ is pretty cliché and worn, but then this is Gambit and Hawkeye, it’s what they do, this is partly why women love these characters so much. Gambit is the smooth talking badboy while Hawkeye is the beefcake jock. In the end, Hawkeye gets the lady’s attention but Gambit steals it away, again, this is what these guys do. Never has there ever been a more perfect defining moment for either of these guys.

I’m pretty sure the reviewer I mentioned above is a Hawkeye fan-boy and didn’t like that Gambit got one over on him… but if Gambit didn’t, then it wouldn’t be Gambit, or even Hawkeye, the guy who can’t even go out and buy some scotch tape without everything going wrong, and still not get the tape.

Now I’m waiting anxiously for the next issue which sees Captain American paired with Kid Omega… that should be… fun?

Review: Gambit #7

This… is Gambit.

This is what really needed to be showcased in the first issue to hook the readers. Gambit being smart, clever, witty, and three steps ahead of everyone else. This is what we’ve come to except from the Cajun and while his introspective ala the first few issues was important, but to capture new readers you really have to show that Gambit is an Ace of Spades, then work on the personal issues.

Pete Wisdom is also in top form as well, loved him in this, he was a bit less manic than in previous issues but his wit is just as charming as Gambit.

If this is the ball that has gotten rolling (cause we did see movement on this side of Gambit in the previous issues) then it will definitely be a fun ride, one worthy of Gambit.

Now we’ re cooking with gas.

First, Gambit sneaks a Knighthood while also charming the Queen. Would we expect anything less from him?

Pete Wisdom, well, I have a feeling if the two weren’t on the opposite sides of the law at the moment, him and Remy would probably be pretty good friends.

This issue though is more ‘smash and grab’ and less character development like the first few. We do get the idea though that Gambit is enjoying this perhaps more than he should seeing as he’d doing it under duress.

Now Remy is considered an Enemy of the Crown… I wonder how long it will take for that to reach back to Rogue and the X-Men. Granted, they won’t likely be in the story at all but I can see a lot of them not thinking too much about it. It’s Gambit after all…

Review: Gambit #5

Gambit is one sneaky thief and it’s good to see him doing a very Leverage style break in, even if he’s kinda being forced into it. Kinda makes you think he’s having a little too much fun, what with being held at gun point and made to rob a tech company. That would sound about right, if Remy LeBeau was having a midlife crisis then he’s pretty much taken care of it now.

This is really the Gambit we need to see, we got through the slight-emo set up and now he’s dancing around, pushing the limits, being the dashing thief we all know and love.

What makes this even better is the introduction of Pete Wisdom, a character that is as charming and quick-witted in his own right… basically Remy if he had decided to be a good guy from the beginning rather than a thief. Pete’s introduction couldn’t have been better.

Oh yes folks… this is gonna be good…

Review: Gambit #4

Finally we wrap up (for the most part) the story of the strange girl who somehow needed to do something that involved ancient demons and… you know, I’m not all to sure really.

Gambit did get his shirt ripped off, does that count for something?

As much as I love Gambit, this first four issues, while being important in showing our hero in a current state of limbo, just didn’t go anywhere story wise that was fun or adventurous. Sure, it was cool to see Gambit fight Quetzalcoatl’s half-cousin, but it was just your typical man-fight-demon-with-style.

Don’t get me wrong, I like that Asmus has gone away from the Gambit tropes of Belle and Rogue and that he’s really trying to get into the mind of Gambit. For that part, I think he’s done a great job. Gambit really is tired and restless. He’s a Rebel Without a Cause who’s settled down and become a school teacher, unable to emotionally get over Rogue.

While in a way this does emasculate Gambit a bit, it’s just too close to the truth in how Gambit would be feeling in this position.

This needed to be done, but let’s hope that now the story and his mood can pick up because I do not want another half-dozen issues of Gambit being moppy/boarderline-emo. We need to see the arc of Gambit taking back his life on every level. Not necessarily returning to a life of crime and quitting the X-Men, but realizing that he is better than all this. We all have that moment in our lives and this is Gambit’s. So far Asmus seems to understand this, let’s hope it continues.

And more shirtless Remy, can’t have enough of that…

Gambit #3

The story is rushing along quite nicely… we’re getting a little more depth out of the female lead (who is still a bucket of clichés though)… but #3 in our lovely new Gambit series feels a bit, well, like it’s just there, a segway. “Here is everything you need to know, tune in next week to get the good stuff”.

But Gambit is still there, being Gambit, though more of his subdued side than his witty (but the wit is there). And there is definitely some lampshading going on which is quite nice. Overall though, not a memorable issue but not a bad one either.

Have I mentioned though my annoyance at the colors and pencils in this? Well, mostly the colors, it’s like watercolors and I guess it’s a personal thing but I prefer the stronger, bolder stuff, like in WatX, Legacy, Deadpool… almost every other comic I read basically.

Can’t complain too much though… we’re getting a lot of man-candy and that is never a bad thing when Gambit is involved…
