Gambit #3

The story is rushing along quite nicely… we’re getting a little more depth out of the female lead (who is still a bucket of clichés though)… but #3 in our lovely new Gambit series feels a bit, well, like it’s just there, a segway. “Here is everything you need to know, tune in next week to get the good stuff”.

But Gambit is still there, being Gambit, though more of his subdued side than his witty (but the wit is there). And there is definitely some lampshading going on which is quite nice. Overall though, not a memorable issue but not a bad one either.

Have I mentioned though my annoyance at the colors and pencils in this? Well, mostly the colors, it’s like watercolors and I guess it’s a personal thing but I prefer the stronger, bolder stuff, like in WatX, Legacy, Deadpool… almost every other comic I read basically.

Can’t complain too much though… we’re getting a lot of man-candy and that is never a bad thing when Gambit is involved…

X-Men Legacy #274

X-Men Legacy #274

X-Men Legacy #274

The moment that every ROMY has been waiting for has finally arrived. Marvel teased us about Mag’s ‘big question’ for Rogue and while I was sure it wasn’t going to be a marriage proposal, I prepared myself for the worst. So while I’m glad that it turned out he only wanted them to get back together and in a roundabout way ‘move in together’, I’m kinda annoyed at Rogue’s response.

Basically, she gives him the same brush off as she gave Gambit.

X-Men # 224
Rogue: But Remy– Ah’m not ready yet to talk about us. Ah don’t know how Ah feel right now. About you, or about me, even.

Annoying for ROMY fans but okay, fair enough, she just learned how to control her powers, this isn’t some forced surpression or random event. She needs time to process this.

Of course in that process she decides she wants to hook up with Magneto.

X-Men # 274
Rogue: Ah know mahself. Ah know as long as Ah’m with someone like you–who takes the lead instinctively, who likes it… who Ah care for… Ah’ll let ’em. […] Ah think Ah figured things out. But ah ain’t gonna know for sure until Ah’ve stood on mah own two feet for a while.

Again she’s telling her boyfriend that she needs to process her life and figure things out. I suppose in many ways this is a very realistic take on a Rogue’s personality. We all know a person like this who can’t committ to relationships, etc, because they really have no idea how to and/or are secrectly afraid. Considering Rogue’s mutation and background, the girl kinda missed that phase in our lives (usually around highschool) where we go through all this and is a majorly late bloomer in this respect.

So while kudos for a realistic approach to the situation and providing actual character growth opportunities… bollocks I say and major /headdesk

I swear… Rogue/Gambit is as bad as Ross/Rachel… but we love it so…

Oh, p.s., I do kinda feel a little bad for Mags in this, but he’s also still a bit of an arrogant prick so…

Uncanny X-Men #18

Uncanny X-Men #18

Uncanny X-Men #18

And Scott proves that he’s gone absolutely mad while Illyana admits it outright.

Illyana pretty much says in so many words that she’s gone insane, apparently been like that for a while now and purposely messed up Piotr’s life in order to prove this to him. Ah, what are siblings for?

As for Scott, yeah, I’ve feared for his mental stability since, well, before Schism and this just puts it all into perspective. Dude, if people are comparing you to Magneto, then you might want to step back and rethink what you’re doing. Though I have to admit, I do like Scott’s retort. “I’m nothing like you, I’m winning!”

This is the kind of actions that can only end in bloodshed, and if you know what happens in AvX #11 then you see my point.

Scott’s downfall is becoming both poignant and annoying. He’s a man who’s had the weight of an entire people on his shoulders and has gone through so much pain and suffering, both personal and on a global mutant scale, that he’s simply become lost in the woods. On the other hand, he’s being so tediously ripped to shreds that one has to wonder if someone just has it in for Scott or in a bad fan fic move he’s being drug down to build someone else up?

As for Emma, she continues to prove my point that she’s a great bad guy… but a horrible good guy. Though honestly, Scott, you kinda deserve it, her cheating on you with Namor cause, you know, you cheated on Jean with Emma… once a cheater, always a cheater.

Review: X-Treme X-Men #3

X-Treme X-Men #3

X-Treme X-Men #3

X-Treme X-Men #3

I started reading this title because the first issue was very quirky. The second issue continued that trend. The third, not so much. There are still a few good things…

HOWLETT, Wolverine-Meets-Teddy-Roosevelt, But Still Canadian

And that’s what I liked about the first two issues, little quirky things like that. There just wasn’t a whole hell of a lot in this issue. Let’s hope that #3 was just a speed bump and not a slope.

X-Men Legacy #273

Rogue is still stuck on another world in another dimension thanks to Phoenix!Illana. She’s just kicking around, helping them solve a global crisis of mass slaughter with nothing but a lot of exposition. Seriously, there isn’t much to write about this comic except for the fact that it could be the author’s attempt at a discourse on the state of our global ecology… or just a tired old trope. Honestly, can’t tell.

There are only two good things about this issue, one is a wonderful reference to Kurt, the second is the tease that in the next issue we get to wonder just how badly Romy is going to be damaged (though I’m hoping we’ll get some good news).

Wolverine and the X-Men #16

Wolverine and the X-Men #16

Wolverine and the X-Men #16

The latest issue of WatX is all about Kade Kilgore, what the little man has been up to since the end of Schism to showing up on Wolverine’s doorstep to cause havoc.

Kade is a sociopath, I’m pretty sure. I mean, I’m not psychologist but there is something seriously wrong with him. He’s smart, yes, and clever, but lacks complete and total regard for his fellow human beings. It’s kinda fun.

Aaron has some snappy dialogue (per usual) that really punctuates Kade’s pathy, however, he gets a little overboard in the origins aspect. To be honest, I don’t know if Aaron is creating Kade’s origin or rehashing it for the viewers, but really, the middle of this comic drug and felt like it was trying to hard. But then the end came back around and Kade’s commentary made me appreciate just how mentally stable in his mental instability he is.

Good comic, but really should have taken the lesson “simple is best” to heart.

Review: X-Factor #243

X-Factor #243

X-Factor #243

X-Factor #243

X-Factor is not one of the titles that I subscribe too because, on a whole, it’s just way too messed up. My bro-in-law likes to call it quirky… I do not think that word means what he thinks it means (to paraphrase one of the most awesome films of all time).

Anyway, I wanted to get #243 because it was going to finally give us the download on what happened to Polaris’ mother. Long story short… ‘yawn’.

Spoilers!

Lorna has an uncontrollable burst of mutant energy and this causes the plane crash which kills her mom and ‘dad’. Mags comes by afterwards and has Mastermind block it from her mind and viola, instant explanation why Lorna’s always been a bit unstable.

It’s just… well… it’s got no flair to it. Lorna is hardly the first mutant whose powers have manifested at the worst possible time… and having her accidentally kill her family, well, compared to some of the stuff Peter David has come up with in X-Factor, this is really lame.

Maybe this suffers from high expectations? I mean, it’s not a bad storyline, it certainly does fit in the universe and is believable enough… but… dunno.

I’ll be honest, I was exploring a similar plot line for Cyclops in my Series since no aliens means I have to crash his family’s plane somehow… but I haven’t written it yet because it just, well, doesn’t seem to work (though granted mostly because I’m trying to figure out how Alex could survive as well with no one figuring it out – so it’s possible the kid might not make it).

But yeah, it’s a simple, borderline cliché plot device which makes it meh… which is why I haven’t actually written Scott’s Origin yet and why I was expecting more from this issue.

Though at least I will count my blessings because considering some of the stuff David has come up with in the past… um, yeah, we’ll go ahead and call this one a win.

X-Treme X-Men #1 & #2 (2012)

X-Treme X-Men #1

X-Treme X-Men #1

I’m not going to lie, X-Treme X-Men is… different. The plot is literally that main universe Dazzler and alt-universe Wolvie, Emma and Kurt have to travel around to different alt universes with an alt-universe Xavier’s head in a bottle. They then have to kill other Xavier’s who are apparently evil and must be stopped.

And yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

What saves the series is the fact that it’s just so damn quirky and sarcastic. It literally knows that it’s ridiculous and embraces it.

Dazzler who is, I guess, the main character, is totally taken the mick out of while snarky comments are thrown left and right, lampshading the fact that this is just one crazy kettle of fish.

I do like these alternate versions of Wolvie, Emma and Kurt. They are different and fun and really have some great lines. These were a great choice for cast in this title, now if the plot can catch up with them and be just as epic.

X-Treme X-Men (2012) is not for everyone, I’ll give you that, and with only two issues it’s hard to be sure if this is exactly what we see is what we get… but if you are in the mood for something different, give it a shot, you’ll at least get a few laughs out of it.

Wolverine and the X-Men #15

I’m not sure what possessed me to start reading this series because I’m not really a fan of the main characters, Wolverine, Kitty and Bobby… but this is just a great title and #15 literally had me laughing out loud with a lot of the quips and jokes riddled throughout.

Iron Man and Broo was hilarious. Bobby’s comment about strip clubs was just… pure awesome. Not to mention Bobby and Wolvie’s talk was one of those ‘everyone is thinking it’ moments.

And of course, this is the comic series that made me fall in love with Quire and his interaction here with Professor X is golden.

I’ll always prefer the light-hearted and fun over the dark and gritty and this series, esp this issue, delivers in spades without being sappy or on the nose. Definitely worth checking out!

Review: Gambit #1 & #2

Gambit #1 & Gambit #2 (2012)

Gambit #1 (2012)

Gambit #1 (2012)

It’s no real secret that I love Gambit as a character. A southern charmer and dashing thief to boot. He’s made to be the kind of man who women want and men want to be… he’s just shy of a cliché but is still his own man which is a testament to creator Chris Claremont’s creative skills. So naturally I was looking forward to reading a brand new series (esp since no Thieves’ Guild stuff!).

Now, I’ve read a few reviews and to be honest, the ones giving it middling scores don’t know what they are talking about. They are completely missing the point as to what is driving Gambit. It’s literally the lack of drive that is pushing him forward.

Gambit used to be a loner thief, then through a series of events he’s, in his own words, become a teacher, a sympathetic ex-boyfriend, and a team player. He is doing what we’ve all done (or will do) once we settle into a routine and that is miss the times when life was more exciting (or seemed to be). For most adults that’s missing all those keggers in college and spending every weekend at the lake kind of things. For Gambit, it’s that thrill of a score.

But he’s a responsible adult so he’s not just gonna burn all bridges and go back to being a full-time thief, just like only adults in a major midlife crisis aren’t going to quit their job. So while we might decide to put together a trip to the lake ‘like old times’ he decides to rob a guy. It’s nothing more deep than that but at the same time it’s extremely deep and showing of his character. It makes him very human as we all experience that kind of slump.

Of course, something goes wrong and now Gambit is on a little adventure…

The adventure though, after two issues, is kinda meh. This other female seems a bit generic tough-girl (and I’m not saying that cause I love Rogue!). She hasn’t done anything we haven’t seen and there is no spark about her that makes her different. Maybe we’ll see something in the next issue, but atm she’s very forgettable. Hell, Sekhmet in Gambit (1999) was more memorable.

And the set up for the adventures is a bit basic and haven’t we don’t this ‘Gambit gets possessed’ shtick before? (granted, this isn’t the same kind of possession, that we know of, for now).

But Gambit is in good form, cracking a few jokes, being absolutely charming, and generally reminding us why we love Gambit. Plus, where can you go wrong with half-nekkid Gambit? Seriously, the boy is showing a lot of skin in these first two issues showing that the writer and artist understands their audience quite well…

So while I wouldn’t give these issues 5 stars, they are still very entertaining and very much setting up for some great Gambit-y goodness to come.
