Review: X-Men #6

X-Men #6Seven chapters into the Battle of the Atom and suddenly everything starts to happen.

The supposed good future X-Men turn bad pretty quickly, mostly cause future!Xavier (or whoever) lost his temper for no reason.  I can understand him going nuts after he learned that young!Bobby and young!Hank went into the future… but he lost his marbles before that even happened. It all felt really pushed in a ‘quick, they need to be the bad guys now’ kind of way.

Jubilee so far has been a pretty fun mom, and I think it’s awesome the students made Shogo a ‘hamster ball’. That’s just the cutest thing ever. And future!Shogo showing up and calling her mom, one of the first moments in this time travel thing that’s made me not cringe.

But what did was the shape shifting ‘son’ of Mystique and Logan? I mean? Wha? Huh? I call B.S.  And have I mentioned I hate these types of time travel arcs? And is Wolverine’s healing factor messed up? Did I miss something there? That’s what I get for not reading the bazillon Wolverine titles…

But Deadpool was awesome… then… when is he not?

Review: Astonishing X-Men #68

Astonishing X-Men #68And Astonishing X-Men leave us, not with a bang, not with a futile attempt at over-existentializing, but with grace and dignity.

I mean, a lot of comics and tv shows, when they end, try to do things up with big, massive, world-ending stuff that’s wrapped up in a few panels. Others try to get a bit too deep, like the characters inside are actually ‘dying’. Then some just leave us on some WTF cliff-hanger.

Astonishing takes the inspired way out and simply doesn’t end. Not in the ‘wait, what the heck happens next’ kind of way Gambit ended, but in the ‘these characters are going about their lives, I’ve simply stopped being the one telling the story’.

It is kinda annoying we don’t know the legal state of Jean-Paul and Kyle, but in the way that’s kinda better because otherwise the whole issue could have devolved into legal mumbo and socio-political boxing. Which wouldn’t have been bad if it wasn’t the final issue. I’m sure this isn’t the last we’ve heard of this situation, though I’m not sure of the how/where for now.

So, yeah, the biggest lesson from this finale is that life goes on. It may seem difficult and lost at times… but it always finds its place.

Damn, I’m gonna miss this title.

Summary: X-Men: Thick as Thieves

A few days ago, crushedburrito and xevg asked about the sequel to X-Men: Among Thieves, a fan fic I wrote last year that was a ‘full length movie’ with Gambit and Rogue. The sequel was entitled X-Men: Thick as Thieves. I have a little bit of it done but XMTFFS kinda took up my time and I just couldn’t get the muse to work on Thieves. Here is the summary of what the story would be… I’ll still work on finding a good scene to post. 

He was charming, she was annoyed.

In Among Thieves, Gambit, the ultimate lady’s man, and Rogue, the untouchable woman… improvised.

However, as time went on, the couple’s inability to touch proved too much of a strain on their relationship. Now, with Rogue a full member of the X-Men and Gambit still a thief for hire, the two eek out an existence as friends… when they aren’t at each other’s throats.

But when Sunfire needs Rogue’s help after their past comes to light, Rogue will once again have to track down a mystery which will take her across the world to unlock secrets she didn’t know she had… and she’ll need Gambit’s help to do it.

Bloodthirsty Yakuza, tenacious Interpol agents, a ruthless assassin, and a priest… this isn’t the beginning of a joke, but by the end, Rogue and Gambit might have wished it was.

Gambit returns in All-New X-Factor

Peter David has been inspired by Google as a corporation getting into new areas of business… And All New X-Factor is about an Internet search corporation Serval Industries, creating its own superhero team, after buying the name from Jamie Madrox. We get Polaris, Quicksilver and… Gambit. With three more to come…

Since Gambit’s solo and Astonishing X-Men ended, he looked to be in limbo. He’s going to return in All-New X-Factor from Peter David. Not only that, but half-siblings Polaris and Quicksilver are going to be working together? And on what seems to be a paid super hero team set up by the MU version of Google? This.. should be really interesting… to say the least.

Review: All-New X-Men #17

All-New X-Men #17Time Travel! You get to time travel! And you get to time travel! Everyone gets to time travel!

Have I mentioned how much I hate time travel arcs? Jubilee is going by Wolverine now, which is kinda nice, except it will never actually happen because they will never let Logan die. And how does Quire play host to the Phoenix Force if it’s been destroyed? Why can’t it stay dead too? Don’t get me started on the possible parentage of Kymera. UGH!

It is interesting to see that glimpse of the future and just how the one group of X-Men went off their rocker. Dazzler as President? Yeah, I can see it.

But all things considered, this “Event” has been running at a pretty slow pace. If they are giving us this pay off in part 6 of 10… I have a feeling there really isn’t much left for them to do and it will either end anti-climatically or very rushed. And except for whoever leaves/stays, none of this is going to matter in the long run.

What I really wanna know though… where is Rogue and/or Gambit in this future? Yes, I have a one track mind. If they aren’t going to get a direct mention then I’ll just assume they got married and shacked up in an Italian villa… totally plausible.

Marvel: ABC Announces Full Season Order For Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - Agent MayCalled it!

ABC has picked up new hit drama “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” for a full season, it was announced today by Paul Lee, president, ABC Entertainment Group.

The series opened as TV’s highest-rated drama debut in nearly 4 years (since 11/03/09) and ranks as the No. 1 new show of the 2013-14 season among Adults 18-49 (4.0 Live + Same Day rating/5.7 Live + 3 Day rating). On average, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is No. 1 in its Tuesday, 8 o’clock time period, and has more than doubled the young adult delivery in the hour year-to-year (+150%).

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” stars Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Brett Dalton as Agent Grant Ward, Chloe Bennet as Skye, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz and Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” Marvel’s first television series, was co-created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen (“Dollhouse,” “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”), who also serve as executive producers along with Jeph Loeb (“Smallville,” “Lost,” “Heroes”) and Jeffrey Bell (“Angel,” “Alias”). “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television, and is broadcast in 720 Progressive (720P), ABC’s selected HDTV format, with 5.1-channel surround sound.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ratings drop but still beats NCIS on ratings share

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.Last week I talked about how Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s ratings dropped in its second episode but it wasn’t anything to worry about. Ratings dropped again on Tuesday, Oct 8th, but the whole night seemed to have crashed a bit.

Ep 1 – 4.7/14 rating/share – 12.12mil viewers
Ep 2 – 3.3/10 ratings/share – 8.66mil viewers
Ep 3 – 2.9/9 ratings/share – 7.87mil viewers

That’s a drop of .4 points, but heavy hitter NCIS only came in with a 2.8/9 rating share. Okay, so AOS only beat them by .1 of a point, but considering just how big of a series NCIS is, I’m sure ABC is calling that a win. AOS was also just shy of being #1 for the night as NBC’s The Voice came in at 3.0/9.

So yeah, context is important when it comes to the ratings, and so far it’s looking good. I’m positive we’ll get a back nine, and it’s looking good for a renewal.

Review: Arrow S02E01 “City of Heroes”

Arrow - Season 2I think the writer’s notes got mixed in with the script…

There is a lot of dialogue in this episode that is literally just the characters talking about their characterization and about how they should probably change it. Oliver shouldn’t really kill people. Oliver and Laurel really should feel guilty for what they did. Etc. Everyone was getting character shifts, flipping on how they were last season due to the events in the Glades. Some of it’s reasonable, but others it’s like the writers figured this would be better for the character, so let’s change it.

While yes, it’s a good thing that Oliver isn’t just dropping bodies everywhere, and seeing Tommy’s stupid death (cause it was literally stupid, he just stands there waiting for the roof to fall) can change a person… the way it’s presented is so monotone and simplistic that I can’t help but wonder if these writers even understand the meaning of nuance?

Oh, and everyone is still whiny.

Seriously, everyone whined, except Walter, but he had like five lines.

The logistics weren’t nearly as bad… no, strike that, they were. Olivier’s Tarzan swing in the beginning was way to slow or that landmine was way too old. And if they had to parachute onto the island… then how did they get off it? You know… I’m just gonna stop there.

The good news is that the show hasn’t gotten any worse, they didn’t try to drastically change up anything (which might have actually been a good thing, but also very bad). So fans of the show are going to get more of the same. Which is good for them… and…. yeah… this is going to be a long season…

p.s. City of Heroes was an awesome game…

Review: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S01E03 “The Asset”

Coulson: You forget – I saw plenty of action with the Avengers. [walks away]
May: And you died.

Followed up later by…

Coulson: Should just be muscle memory.

Totally trolling us with what really happened on the Helicarrier. It screams Life Model Decoy, but would that be too obvious? But what other option is there? In theory, it shouldn’t be long before we find out.

As for the rest of the episode, this show has started to gain a dual personality much like fellow ABC series Once Upon A Time. The stuff with Ward and Skye is pretty lame, obvious, harsh on the dialogue. The stuff with Coulson…  OMG, freaking brilliant!

Every moment in the Ward/Skye/Training story line you could see the next piece in line. It was laid out like a high school drama play and predictable at every step. There was the occasional cute comment, but for the most part, it was where the episode dragged the most. The writers continue to flux with Skye’s seemingly questionable loyalties but it’s nothing new, nothing fresh, and it was predictable. No way she was going to turn on the team this quickly and not for that reason. Still no chemistry between Ward and Skye as well.

But then we get to Coulson’s plot arc. Only Coulson would just wear a suit to an infiltration like that. I mean, he doesn’t put on a flack vest, he doesn’t even strip to a t-shirt. Nope, just wearing the suit cause he’s classy like that. Then when he confronts the scientist, Dr. Hall, the whole scene with the rotating gravity was spectacularly well done for a tv-budget.  And his decision at the end, to sacrifice the man who was sacrificing himself. It was cold, it was calculating, and was probably the right thing to do. I literally sat up and said a few choice unrepeatable words.  This is the kind of thing we want to see more of in this show. The soft underbelly, the moralist existentialism. Basically, the stuff we’ve come to know from Whedon. I hope this is just the beginning.

Speaking of beginnings… yeah, way to go creating a super-villain there Coulson… couldn’t be more proud.
