X-Treme X-Men #8

X-Treme X-Men #8

Review: X-Treme X-Men #8

This title has been doing consistently good since issue 4 and number 8 is no different. I am actually wondering if Earth-616 Blaire is going to be killed off and replaced with Zombie-Earth Blaire? I really don’t think so because E616 Blaire is ‘our’ Blaire and killing her pretty much cuts off the story from E616… but at the same time… anything seems to go with this comic.

Normally I would be balking at the idea of killing off the main character, but the way it’s been done, it would work in a rather spectacular way and not fall into the dreaded ‘kill ’em for drama’s sake’ that tends to fill a lot of entertainment recently.

It also says something to quality of writing that while the idea of ‘fighting oneself’ can be very tropey, cliché, and just plain campy, once again it comes off smoothly and cleanly.

I can’t say how much I am enjoying this title, more so than many of the others that I subscribe to. If you’re not reading this… you should! Pick it up now!

Review: Gambit #7

This… is Gambit.

This is what really needed to be showcased in the first issue to hook the readers. Gambit being smart, clever, witty, and three steps ahead of everyone else. This is what we’ve come to except from the Cajun and while his introspective ala the first few issues was important, but to capture new readers you really have to show that Gambit is an Ace of Spades, then work on the personal issues.

Pete Wisdom is also in top form as well, loved him in this, he was a bit less manic than in previous issues but his wit is just as charming as Gambit.

If this is the ball that has gotten rolling (cause we did see movement on this side of Gambit in the previous issues) then it will definitely be a fun ride, one worthy of Gambit.

X-Men Legacy #3

X-Men Legacy #3

Review: X-Men Legacy #3

This issue of Legacy is a bit strange. You have two story lines going at once: one is your typical (cliché even) events happening to other people are mimics of what I’m dealing with and the second is something akin to a Three Stooges skit.

For the most part, this kinda works. It’s different, a little twisted, not too confusing, and generally is amusing. The skit does take away from the cliché part which is a good thing cause it is cliché.

But then everything in the skit is wrapped up and you’re left with a rather blank back-end which is completely devoid of any originality either in story or dialogue.

To give it the benefit of the doubt though, Legion hasn’t really done much recently that I know of so the character is being reintroduced and does need a certain level of ‘breaking in’ that other characters wouldn’t. Like X-Treme X-Men which didn’t really start getting good till the fourth issue, and also had an underused character that kinda came out of the blue, I’m giving this one a chance to also pull itself together.

Slow news day…

CinemaBlend – Will Loki be back for Avengers 2? Probably not, which is cool, he’s a great character but A2 needs to step it up. At least this means he’s not dead at the end of Thor 2!

Review: Deadpool #3

I will say one thing about the new Deadpool series, it does make me laugh out loud. Some of it is the ‘so wrong it’s right’ jokes and the rest is the references to points in our political history.

This was definitely the funniest of the new DP’s so far (if for the letters from other Marvel writers in the Dear Deadpool section)… and kudos for including Dr Strange.

However, there still isn’t much in the way of depth here other than the whispered comment by Dr Strange in regards to something being off about DP. Yes, DP is off, that’s never been debated. Could this be the reference to what the heck happened between the last run and this run that we’ve been waiting for?

Let’s hope we’ll be picking up the pace here while taking the mick out of our country… I did love the following exchange:

Nixon: Now see here, my fellow American.
DP: I’m Canadian
Nixon: Bah! Who let you in?

That’s a very good question…

X-Treme X-Men #7.1

X-Treme X-Men #7.1

Review: X-Treme X-Men #7.1

After a nice solid run of issues, 7.1 is a little on the weaker side but still fairly good.

Sage is indeed a regular character now and is pretty awesome. The idea of an Xavier Skywhale is insane… but in a good way.

The interesting touch was that halfway through you start to think that maybe they have come back to Earth 616 and turns out that yes, they have. The comment “Yours was evil, right?” perfectly set the tone and gave the reader some food for thought.

A little more on the nose at the end than I’d like but all the same a nice transition piece to a Savage Land dimension next up.

All-New X-Men #2

All-New X-Men #2

Review: All-New X-Men #2

Issue one set us up for the time travel and was surprisingly good (because I thought it was going to be very trite and cheesy).

Issue two is a bit slower, mostly giving us the download of getting this guys to the future.

Bobby meeting Bobby was a classic trope but it worked because Bobby is, well, Bobby. Jean putting the whammy on Logan was also pretty darn hilarious.

I was afraid this might be a case of just ‘trying to relive the glory days’ with the old team but so far everything does feel organic and everyone has real reasons to be doing what they are doing. Scott wants to understand how he could have turned into Revolutionary!Scott. Jean wants to know why she is dead. Hank wants is facing down his own mortality as well. Bobby and Angel are along for the ride, trusting their friends.

It really makes you want to know what’s going to happen once these people intersect.

Review: Arrow (S1E08) Vendetta

Vendetta, or the ‘oh yeah, we’re on the CW’ episode.

Seriously, 80% of this episode was relationship drama. ‘Don’t hurt me cause I can’t be hurt anymore’. ‘You still love him/her’. Which wouldn’t have been so bad if the dialogue wasn’t… so bad.

Really, if you have to say this stuff bluntly and outloud then you’ve already lost the game.

Once again, the only really good stuff is the supporting characters like Digby and the computer tech. I couldn’t give a hoot-n-nanny about Oliver and his ‘I can’t open myself to anyone’ or whatshisface’s ‘I’m broke now and I want to make it on my own’ tripe.

The show almost reads like bad fanfic… yes… I went there.

According to SuperHeroHype: “X-Termination [the newest crossover event from Marvel] will tell the story of the ‘Age of Apocalypse’ Nightcrawler wanting to go back to his own timeline (currently he’s in the 616 Marvel universe on X-Force). The series will start and end with its own X-Termination Alpha and Omega issues and in between will spill into Astonishing X-Men, X-Treme X-Men, and (of course) Age of Apocalypse.”

“The AoA is Nightcrawler’s home,” said Age of Apocalypse writer David Lapham. “That’s where his family and friends are, that’s where he’s spent his whole life fighting Apocalypse and then Weapon Omega.  That’s what he was trying to liberate. Just because he leaves to another place and has an adventure doesn’t mean he turns his back on all that and says “this new universe is a lot safer and cushier. I think I’ll stay here while my loved ones suffer.

“As much sympathy as he’s had for what he’s seen and done here in the Marvel Universe, he just can’t bring himself to feel it’s a completely real place. The Marvel Universe is some kind of dreamland. The AoA is real. As far as the greatest damage he could cause. Well, that’s part of our crossover event…”

I’m a fan of Astonishing and X-Treme X-men so I will likely be picking this up when it comes out in March 2013 in order to keep in line with events happening in those comics. At least this doesn’t look to have the major ‘let’s just muck with everything’ that AvX had, could actually be kinda interesting.

Review: A+X #2

A+X is the opposite of AvX, Avengers and X-Men team up rather than fight each other. Like AvX it’s less about actual plot and more about kicking butt for any reason they can muster.

In issue 2, Rogue and Black Widow team up to take on a Sentinel which has gone crazy. Apparently BW has a car fetish, who knew? But the fun part is when BW chooses to transfer her powers to Rogue via full on lip-lock kiss. Now, I don’t know a lot about BW unfortunately to know how in character this is, but Rogue reacted about as I expected, in that she was surprised but ultimately replied with “Oh. Good Kisser. Spy Secrets. Wow.”

Between this and her ‘Kinky Bondage Drinking Games’ with Gambit in Uncanny Avengers and score a few for Rogue.

As for the second team up of Kitty Pryde and Iron Man… I don’t normally comment on artwork because for the most part I’m not that big of a stickler but this one was a little odd. The way that fingers were made into sharp disjointed claws and everyone was so gangly… it was weird. Thankfully it had some pretty fun dialogue to make up for it.

Gambit is in the next issue, paired up with Hawkeye! I don’t foresee a lot of kissing there…
