Going to try something new, unless there is a news article I really want to talk about or is just really big in its own right, then I’ll post some news round-ups which will allow me to not clutter as much and also include some articles I wouldn’t post individually anyway.

io9 – Marvel writer Dan Slott is getting death threats for the leaked ending of Spider-Man #700
some people take comics way to seriously… as the article points out, it’s a comic book, wait a dozen story arcs and whatever ticked you off will be retconned or rendered moot

Interesting article here from BleedingCool.

Last week, ABC gave a thirteen episode order to a show called Weird Desk, something that sounded a little bit like the X-Files.

The premise promised freak-of-the week adventures involving stuff that’s too weird for the CIA and NSA, all re-routed to a clandestine operation at the top of the US intelligence tree, higher even than the president. They’d be sent all of the supernatural stuff, or anything alien in origin. The Mulder bait.

Deadline have reported that the show has now had its order cancelled. But why?

Well, the reason may be banalities of organisation and funding, or it may have something to do with these reported rumours:

I hear there was concern, at Marvel and internally at ABC, that Weird Desk may be similar to Joss Whedon’s high-profile ABC pilot SHIELD., an offshoot of blockbuster Avengers franchise. There is speculation about objections from Marvel, one of Disney Co.’s most prized possessions, to the new project.

Which would at least cement how the SHIELD show is going the way you probably thought it would.

Formally, Weird Desk might get another look in when the next wave comes around. If the Marvel rumours are true, however, I don’t think the odds are good.

According to TVLine, Brett Dalton is the next relative newbie to be brought into the S.H.I.E.L.D. tv series from Whedon.

He’s deadly, precise, and cool under fire — but not so great with the people skills.

So he’s kinda cliché? And it looks like the cast will be a bunch of 20-something hotties with this trend. Sounds about right… that’s the target demo for most tv audiences but I would hope he’d do something for the older audiences too.

Some casing news for Wheadon’s upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. tv series thanks to CinemaBlend.

The Hollywood Reporter shared the news today that Elizabeth Henstridge and Iain De Caestecker have joined the pilot, playing Leo and Gemma (they’re going with a “G” instead of a “J” here). Gemma is described as a science whiz, while Leo is the tech guru and it’s said that they bicker with each other, all of which fits with the previously mentioned character descriptions.

The character descriptions are pretty generic but that’s to be expected. I’m surprised at the youngness of the casting here though considering these are full fledge agents. Is this a trend and this will be a mostly young cast going for the 20-30 demo or just these two characters? I guess we’ll see.

At NYCC, it’s been confirmed via CBR that Coulson, played by Clark Gregg, will be in Wheadon’s S.H.E.I.L.D. tv series!

Yes!!!!!!

Now, does this mean he didn’t die and that the man who did was a Life Model Decoy? Or maybe he was saved in time? Or that he was turned into Vision (and this means Wanda!!)?

Or will the show take place pre-Avengers?

Do we care? COULSON LIVES!!!!!

Joss Whedon gets to write a live action fan fic tv series… cause seriously… once the comics moved away from their original creators, everything became fan fic, professional fan fic, but fan fic none the less. Doubly so when you get a writer who is obviously a fan of the original.

Deadline reports that the live-action tv series that’s been talked about since Avengers blew away the box office has been greenlighted and it will center around S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. This is smart because it fits in universe without actually needing to pay the big names for anything more than perhaps the occasional cameo.

Am I looking forward to this? Yes and no. For one, the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in this show are going to be either brand new originals or minor ones from the comics which only diehards would know about. So Joss has the task of making characters that are going to have to be appealing to an audience who mostly only know S.H.I.E.L.D. from the movies and it didn’t exactly have a large role.

I say this because the tv audience is much larger than the movie audience and the movie audience is larger than the comic fan audience. It’s the same issue I have with my X-Men fan fic, if it where to be an actual tv series then the assumption has to be made that most of the target audience would be made up of people who don’t exactly know who the X-Men are (and a few will probably accuse them of being a Heroes or Alphas rip-off) and the other main group will only know X-Men from the movies.

So a line has to be drawn, Joss’ show has to appeal to a much wider audience than Avengers did while at the same time pleasing movie and comic fans alike. By being mostly (if not all) original characters then he doesn’t fall into the traps that come with re-introducing known characters. Such as Captain America, comic fans know all his back history, movie fans know the history shown in the movies, but you’d still have to go through that in a tv show. You’d have to make sure people understood his origin without a) skipping over it so much you confuse/piss off those who don’t know and b) annoy those who do because it makes them think you think they are idiots.

Joss has created plenty of characters that we all know and love, he’s given us a great film in Avengers, so I’m excited to see where he will go with this, but it won’t be easy for him because he’ll have to create characters that get me interested beyond just being S.H.I.E.L.D agents.

Until we get more information, I’m going to be neutral to cautiously optimistic on this new Marvel endeavour.
