Courtesy of LaynieGossip via Newsarama, we now have a picture of Peter Dinklage from the set of Days of Future Past.

Peter Dinklage in Days of Future Past

He is totally rocking the ’70s style with the hair and mustache. He kinda looks like a cop who is ready to just ruin your day. This is a good thing as he’s playing the villain.

But what villain?

Villains can start out in ‘regular clothes’ before developing into a costume or physical changes, so we can’t rule out plenty of options, but really, if he’s not playing Bolivar Trask then Singer better have something really clever up his sleeve because, come on, having Trask be the villain in DOFP is perfect! A man who saw mutants as an evasive exotic (to steal a phrase from the current X-Men Legacy run) and felt the need to build massive robots as guardians? Only to have the whole thing go sideways and sacrificing himself to destroy that which he created?

He is a perfect counter balance to both Xavier and Magneto, three points of the same star. If they play this right the audience won’t know who to root for and who to be sympathetic towards.

Dinklage is going to have to fight for ‘top villain’ against Michael Fassbender who really brought his A-game to the Magneto role in First Class and this is a fight I just can’t wait to see.

X-Men #1 - Skottie Young variantI’m annoyed, my retailer didn’t have the Skottie Young variant… I always buy the Skottie Young variant!

Anyway, as for the comic itself, it’s… interesting.

Instead of layering the reader with a lot of backstory, we get two pages of light poetic exposition then we’re dumped ‘in media res’. Jubilee is heading ‘home’ with a baby she ‘adopted’ but is being followed so she calls her X-Men friends to lend a hand. John Sublime shows up at the school just in time to warn everyone about five minutes too late that he has a psychotic sister who is apparently much worse than he is.

I kinda can’t help being a little disappointed that the all-female X-Men team is going to be fighting a female for their first enemy. It seems to be a trend lately that in female team books they have to go after a female villain. Such as Le Fey and the Doomaidens in Fearless Defenders. I don’t read any of the current female solo books so I don’t know if they have the same issue so it could just be the team books. In any case, I would have much rather seen the gang fight Sublime himself than creating a ‘sister’, basically the equivalent of a “Lady Sublime”, instead.

That being said, the writing is very well done. Often writers, when trying to make strong female characters or a female team, go too much out of their way to say ‘this is a strong character/team’ instead of just letting them exist organically. With the exception of Jubilee who has perfect characterization to be where she is with adopting the orphan, all the other women are were they are simply because they are. No muss and no fuss about it.

Characterizations are quiet good as well, no one is acting out of character or even worthy of a raised brow moment. I was worried that Wood might put Rogue in line with how Remender is writing her but thankfully Wood has Rogue as sassy (note: not bitchy) as always. Though the train part I didn’t quite understand, I mean, if she trashed the first three sections wouldn’t the back half still keep going towards the other train? Did she move the sections with the people off the track? I have no idea but apparently the day was saved so I’ll go with that.

This title has a lot of expectations on it being that it’s from Wood, an all female cast, and has some heavy hitters in it who carry a large fanbase. It was a good, solid opening act… we’ll see where it leads from here.

We have yet another reveal via twitter from Bryan Singer regarding Days of Future Past.

An extra munches at the Craft Services table in Trask Industries coveralls. This absolutely confirms that Trask will be a thing in DOFP, so likely Bolivar Trask himself will make an appearance, if not be the major villain.  Unless of course this is just a ‘fan service insert’ used to throw us off track. Somehow I doubt that as Trask and the Sentinel program are two major of players in the X-Men mythos, not to mention the comic arc which this is based on, that it wouldn’t make sense for them not to be in the films.

Speculation has run that Peter Dinkledge will be playing Bolivar Trask and this certainly helps that assessment. We’ve yet to see Peter on set to see what kind of costume or wardrobe he is wearing.

I want to also note the color of the company logo. Purple… just like the Sentinels. And doesn’t it kinda look like a robot face? Looks like big purple robots are in our future…

From SFX

In issue #236 of SFX we talk to director Bryan Singer about X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Due for release July next year, X-Men: Days of Future Past is already causing a stir. Singer shares with SFX just why the newest instalment is the most exciting yet.

“It’s not just another X-Men film; it’s not just about the combined cast as there will be certain technologies and other stuff that we haven’t seen before in the X-Men films.”

“There are also issues of time and we’re messing about with that,” He says of the inclusion of some of the cast from the original trilogy, “I think we’ve got it figured out. I pitched it to James Cameron when I was in New Zealand last year and he said, ‘Yes, that makes sense.’”

“We wanted an opportunity to bring some of the favourite older and younger characters together,” says Singer. Not only are Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and a whole host of the original trilogies cast returning to star but Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) is set to make an appearance, rumoured to be playing villainous Bolivar Trask.

The original comic sees a Future Kitty Pryde going back in time to change a her dystopian future. The film is set to follow much of the same storyline. “We also wanted to play with the notion of different times and stuff like the way that time affects destinies. It enables the film to not just be a sequel to First Class or X-Men 3 but to actually be its own thing.”

You can grab your copy of issue #236 from the 29 May.

Again, DOFP is shaping up to be that film which could be either really good or really bad. The biggest thing in this article is Singer acknowledging that messing with time affects how the future will play out. So is this confirmation that DOFP will make the original films AU so they can start a new timeline? One that basically fixes all the stuff that went wrong? It would be a great way to do a reboot of a film franchise, by actually using an already established plot arc and original actors to do it. It’s not really a ‘reboot’ then is it?

But, again, as much as this sounds good on paper (as I’m sure X3 and X:O:W did), the finished project is still up in the air.

Bryan Singer has once again tweeted us a picture, this time of Ellen Page as Kitty Pryde.

The first two things: Yes, they fixed her hair and I kinda like that jacket. It’s like Steampunk meets Game of Thrones? Not sure about it being “Kitty-ish” but it’s cool, it’s post-Apocalyptic, I can dig it.

Secondly, that’s Bobby there on the edge almost cropped out of the image. These two are doing a scene together… and the expressions on their faces could literally mean anything…

There is clearly a lot of emotion in Ellen’s eyes… but her hands are clutched in front of her and there is space between them. So the eyes say ‘love’ but the stance say ‘friend zone’.

It doesn’t help that Shawn Ashmore replied to the post with “hello:)”.

So it looks like there is going to be some substance to their appearances in the film beyond cameos as these two do get a chance to talk and obviously there is something between them, unrequited or no. This lends towards the film having some kind of conclusion to the Bobby/Rogue storyline from the first three films… or at least I hope so. Even though I’m a Romy, I would at least like to see something definitive here.

I know, Rogue got the cure and they held hands and all that in X3 but that was just begging for a lot of emotional turmoil and an easily collapsible relationship… as many fan fics have eloquently pointed out.

Hyperion's Rogue TouchAccording to CBR and an official press release, Marvel and Hyperion Books will be publishing two novels. One about She-Hulk, the other about Rogue.

“both novels showcase strong, smart heroines seeking happiness and love while battling cosmic evil.”

And while that is all said and good because you can never have to much Rogue imho, take a look at this blurb for Rogue Touch.

The second novel, Rogue Touch, features one of the most popular X-Men characters, Rogue, a young woman trying to navigate the challenges of everyday life and romance—except that her touch is deadly.  After accidentally putting her first boyfriend in a coma, she runs away from home where, she meets the handsome and otherworldly James and sparks fly. Like Rogue, however, James’ life is hardly simple. To elude his mysterious and dangerous family, James shaves his head, dons all black. Stealing a car, they head out on the highway and eventually, Rogue has to decide whether she will unleash her devastating powers in order to save the only man alive who seems to truly understand her.

Okay…

A) I know the idea of her putting Cody into a coma and running away is canon, but this blurb reads way to much like the start of many of Fan Fictions, like here and here, oh and this little naughty fan fic.

B) Check out this quote from Uncanny X-Men #337:

Gambit: So why’s everybody callin’ him “Joseph”? What is dat all about? … Maybe I should just start callin’ myself somethin’ different. James. “Gambit”? No, I’m James.

Need I say more?

UPDATE: This has come to my attention:

C) James… James Howlett? I doubt this is the same person from the book but considering his role in her life in the movie-verse it is worth mentioning.

mark-miller-empire-onlineWith the success of Avengers, studios started to realize the benefit of having a singular ‘show runner’ as it where to oversee different movies that are all part of the same universe. This makes total sense and I’m all for it. So when Fox said they were putting Mark Miller in charge of their comic book properties I was supportive even though I didn’t know much about him other than I watched the Kick Ass movie.

After the past few months I’ve come to realize that Mark Miller really needs to just stop talking.

Recently he completely ditched the idea of making a Justice League movie.

“I actually think the big problem for them is the characters are just too out of date. The characters were created 75 years ago, even the newest major character was created 68 years ago, so they’re in a really weird time.”

Granted, characters like Wolverine, Rogue and Gambit were created in the 70s, 80s, and 90s (or there abouts if you want to get technical). But the core of the X-Men go back to the 60s. Like there is nothing weird about the time span between the 60s and 90s? Especially when compared to today.

Also, the DC characters have been rebooted several times in the past years in order to make them more ‘current’. Batman especially has shown in the Nolan movies that he is just as modern as any other character and he was created in 1939!

He goes on to say in that same interview:

“The actual logistics of each member of the Justice League is disastrous, and you put them all together and I think you get an excellent way of losing $200 million.”

justice_league_movie_cast

Five Main Characters – Lord of the Rings had how many?

Five Justice League members are too much but a group of at least five mutants all with their own equally different powers/backgrounds, not to mention DOFP will include old and young versions of said mutants, is okay?

“On the other hand I though the third film felt crowded, but then Singer is excellent at working with ensemble casts. So with this one [DOFP] I feel it is all fine. I have read the screenplay and it doesn’t feel rushed and it doesn’t feel like it is too many characters.”

So obviously he thinks it can work.

“X-Men in the Nineties was so convoluted in comic-book terms, and Bryan drove a knife through it and make it work [in X-Men 1] and simplified the whole thing.”

So maybe it’s just a 90s thing? Which would be odd since he says that JL won’t work cause it’s so old. Is there like a sweet spot then, a frame of years that only produce good comic book movies? Nope.

Millar then expresses no worries in how the film [Days of Future Past] is being handled, despite the heavy mythology. “I think as long as it’s done right.”

Oh, so not age, just how it’s done? Wouldn’t that apply to Justice League or is it just an X-Men thing? Nope.

“From what I’ve seen [of the Fantastic Four reboot] and from talking to him [director Josh Trank] – he and I have had dinner a couple of times and we talk quite regularly as well – he’s contemporarising it. I think he’s just making it work for the screen – he’s a great storyteller.”

I'm admittedly bad at math but I count more than five here, even if you take out Sabes and Toad.

I’m admittedly bad at math but I count more than five here, even if you take out Sabes and Toad.

So, Justice League is impossible to handle and contemporarize but X-Men and Fantastic Four are okay?

Oh, in the same article he compares FF to Chronicle and Alien… wha? He can make those kinds of comparisons but it’s impossible to do anything ‘new’ or ‘different’ with Justice League?

But really, the crux of his whole ‘the actual logistics just wouldn’t work’ idea is this: You are a paid creative consultant. If you were working for WB it would be your job to make it work, and you would make it work. That is what you are supposed to be doing and what you should be doing for Fox.

Case in point: Sentinels, the big, bulky, fiscally irresponsible, destined to be considered Transformers rip-off’s, purple robots.

Here he talks about them as being ‘cool’.

“I don’t really want to give too much away but the Sentinels are a big feature of this story. They will be cool and this will deliver on all of the teasers.”

Really? So yeah, you can make those robots cool but you can’t figure out how to make Aquaman talk under water? Oh wait, you did.

“Are they gonna talking telepathically?”

Just make sure your actors can emote and can do voice overs and it could work. Or, dunno, take the movie out of the water for most of it? You would think of something cause it’s what you’re paid to do. If, you know, you were being paid by WB, which you’re not, but I’m sure you’d be singing a different tune if you did.

And apparently I’m not the only person who thinks there is something a whole lot dodgy with Miller’s latest comments about WB’s Justice League movie.

Of course, that’s the movie version he’s talking about, as for the comics, well, he knows how he would have done the reboot. Which, yeah, I guess we’ve all had that moment of ‘man, I could do better’, but when you put it with everything else he’s said you can’t help but read it with such an arrogant tone.

Which is made all the more arrogant by this

“I just feel the exciting stuff that’s happening just now is creator owned.”

Umm, that’s kind of the opposite of what is going on with the X-Men and Fantastic Four movies as they are licensed by Fox… you know, the people who are paying you to make sure their movies are good.

But then, Miller’s getting several of his own properties off the ground as movies: Kick-Ass 2, Nemesis, Supercrooks and Superior and Secret Service. Seems like his job as ‘creative consult’ is working out very well for him personally. I’m not gonna begrudge the man getting his comics the film-treatment, but again, with his bashing of everyone else’s works, everything he says is tinted with a hugely arrogant and unattractive tone. Makes you wonder just how much he really cares about the X-Men and FF films.

Especially when he takes credit here and here for The Avengers movie, which, okay, fair enough, he’s happy for them…

“People have suggested we should feel ripped off, but we don’t own these characters. All we did was give them a lick of paint and come up with a story and the visuals. These are Marvel-owned characters and I have my own little empire with Millarworld so I’m genuinely just pleased to see all this on the big screen and wish them nothing but the best with it.”

But that praise is short lived because apparently the Avengers movies aren’t going to go far

“Where I think it’s going to be difficult is once you’ve done that thing of putting all those characters in one film…you know, it’s like having Harry Potter, James Bond and Spider-Man all in one movie. I think what’ll be difficult then is to try and top that because people want to see it get bigger.”

Well, just scrap the X-Men then, cause once you have an ensemble movie that’s it apparently. No one is going to want to see just an individual movie about their favorite super-hero, one of which they might not have realized was awesome until having seen them in Avengers. [note the sarcasm here]

Sorry Hawkeye, Ant-Man and Dr Strange beat you to it.

Sorry Hawkeye, no movie for you! Ant-Man and Dr Strange beat you to it. Story of your life, huh?

Seriously, how many people went back and watched Captain America and Thor after watching Avengers? Does he really think audiences don’t want to see their favorite characters in a more highlighted and individual setting? Tell that to all the Hawkeye fans begging to get him a movie.

Oh, but if you’re X-Men…

“The X-Men feels like a universe by itself; there’s so many characters and so many great potential spin-off characters.”

Basically, what I’m getting from Mark Miller is that only stuff he is involved in can work… everything else can’t?

I am really excited to see The Wolverine. I’m also waiting anxiously for more information onDays of Future Past because I think it could be epic. But every time Mark opens his mouth I suddenly get an overwhelming sense of dread, and not the cool Judge Dredd kind.

So please, Mark Miller, stop talking, especially if all you are going to say is backhanded compliments that are truly just insults.

3/ Third would have to be Dark Knight Rises. Controversial, I know, but I think this might be my favourite of all the Batman movies. It has its problems, especially Nolan’s reluctance to make Batman himself especially interesting, and the pay off with Bane SO anticlimactic after such a brilliant build up. But it’s got so many good moments and was so incredibly ambitious that I think it clobbers Avengers in terms of pure cinema. Avengers was a very fun popcorn movie with a lot of good jokes, but in terms of actual scale and depth I think Dark Knight rises to the top for Summer 2012 for me.

So, TDKR had a major character that was dull and no pay off but that was apparently better than Avengers.

Considering Miller’s role in upcoming comic book movies and major franchises, he really shouldn’t be going around putting down everyone else’s works just to make his look better. I think someone needs to give him a dictionary and open it to the word ‘tacky’… then let the movies speak for themselves.

SyFy has cancelled super-powered tv series Alphas after two seasons according to TVLine. This was a very realistic take on the super-power genre where people weren’t mutants, they were basically humans whose natural abilities were just ‘more advanced’ than normal.

Basically Alphas was a low budget Heroes without the mystique. Heroes was a high budget Mutant X without the B-Film style. Mutant X was a television version of the X-Men without the licensing.

All three of these tv shows did really well, Mutant X had three seasons and high ratings but its production company folded not through fault of the show. Heroes went four seasons, gained lots of awards, but was ultimately done in by its own convoluted writing. SyFy didn’t say exactly why Alphas was cancelled though don’t think it was ratings as it seems to be pulling the same numbers as Warehouse 13 during their season finales. But then Warehouse 13 is more marketable and has a smaller cast, not sure about their FX budget as well.

The audience has spoken though, they like their superheroes… especially when they are the more fanciful/magical kind even if they have a ‘reason’ for being super, like being government experiments in Mutant XAlphas was the most ‘realistic’ and had the worst ratings. This just seems to prove that an X-Men tv series is a no brainer.

You have characters and a style people already love in X-Men that will bring people back, the Animated shows have already proven that X-Men in a serialized capacity sells! In fact, serialized is a much better fit for X-Men than movies simply because you have a huge cast and built in long-arc stories.

Simply make sure you don’t go completely off the reservation like X3 and X:O:W and you have a built in audience who will tune in. Then go a little on the realistic side to save on the FX budget but keep that mystique of super-powers and you’re golden. This can work people!

A girl can dream right?
